The presented painting is a typical example of Capek’s figurative work – a solitary female figure set in a simplified landscape, conceived through distinctive contours and reduced shapes. The figure of the girl is modeled in a flat manner with all distinguishing facial features suppressed, thereby achieving a sense timelessness in the scene. The colors of the dress have symbolic meaning: the blue, red, and white are reminiscent of the Czechoslovak tricolor and stem from the artist's concerns about the future of the Czech nation and his fear of the approaching war, which proved fatal for him.

Issued from the stock of Marta Florianova in Stara Rise, Moravia, in March 1922 as vol. no. 651. Very good condition. Lit.: Arno Sanka, Ceske bibliofilske tisky, Brno 1923, p. 60, no. 217. Bookbinder Jana Pribikova trained under Emanuel Zarybnicky in Kadan and further refined her skills with Jiri Faltus in Zamberk and with the Sobot family in Loket. In 1983 she was awarded the title “Master of Artistic Crafts” in the field of Artistic Bookbinding. She participated in more than 60 exhibitions worldwide, receiving several prestigious awards. Her works are predominantly represented in private collections. She founded her own bookbinding studio in 1990. She has been successfully active in both the Czech and international markets not only in artistic bookbinding, but also in restoration and picture framing. She teaches modern and historical bindings as well as paper marbling.

It contained six loosely inserted linocuts and four lithographs, another linocut was printed on the title page.In the Album of Ten Fragile Sheets, Josef Čapek presented to the public a representative selection of his previous graphic work. In the interwar period, Josef Čapek also worked as a distinctive caricaturist with an unmistakable artistic style. From 1921 he consistently contributed his caricatures to Lidové noviny and occasionally to other periodicals. In the case of the presented work, it is an anecdote printed under the title Masopust in the daily newspaper Lidové noviny 34, 1926, No. 42, 24. 1., p. 9. The presented work is directly related to a number of Čapka's journalistic drawings on a social theme, which are made using the same technique , on the same background material, in the same format and also show related stylistic features. In addition, stylistically and thematically, this drawing corresponds with Čapka's free work in the Chlap period around the mid-1920s. On the back of the work there is a signature and a legend, written in Čapk's hand: "Why, I would go to a masquerade ball - I would prefer this one as Cyrano or the Maharaja's darling - if only I had clothes for it." Of the numerous set of Čapka caricatures for Lidové noviny, only the torso has been preserved, scattered in private and public collections. In this case, it is an anecdote printed with the title Curriculum vitae in the daily Lidové noviny 32, 1924, No. 557, 6.11. afternoon, p. 3. On the back of the work is a signature and a legend, written in Čapkova's hand; the original text written in ink is corrected in pencil. The resulting text reads: "and I wasn't hungry there - I can't say - I had jaundice at the time and a tapeworm on top of that - " The text in the newspaper corresponds to the annotation on the back of the drawing, the printed version exactly matches the submitted drawing. Josef Čapek's illustration for the Tramp's tale about František Králov, who is unjustly imprisoned for stealing a suitcase with money. In addition to his artistic activity, Josef Čapek was also active as a publicist and writer. His personal understanding and absorption of Cubism is among the best and most original that Czech modern art has given to the world. Immediately after the outbreak of the Second World War, Čapek was arrested, he died in a concentration camp shortly before the end of the war in April 1945. JOSEF ČAPEK 1887 - 1945 - BATHING CHILDREN

Josef Čapek's paintings of children from the turn of the 1920s and 1930s represent a prized work culminating in 1935 with the exhibition On the Children's Motif in Dr. Hugo Feigl's private gallery, where the work Bathing Children was exhibited. "It is a world of childhood, a world of children's games, a world portrayed not by a cartoonist, whose work can be well replaced by a camera, but seen through the eyes of a child and just as simply and sensitively interpreted as perceived." Svetozor. František Halas and art historian Vojtěch Volavka, for example, also spoke enthusiastically about the cycle: "We are really standing in front of a piece of perfect art, which should be considered one of the most remarkable of our cultural chapters." On the basis of the exhibition, Čapek was approached by the organization Družstevní práce, which published ten of his drawings as postcards. In the same year, the set of drawings represented the Czechoslovak pavilion at the Venice Biennale. These ten drawings include the offered work Bathing Children, which Družstevní práce chose for postcards, in the lower right corner the mark DP (Družstevní práce). So far, we have only been able to see Bathing Children as a reproduction on a postcard. The expertise was made by PhDr. Pavla Pecinkova, CSc.

The work will be included in the prepared book list of the author's work. This painting is a well-known, playful and humorous work that fully captures the author's optimistic view of the world. This work is a well-known oilpainting by Josef Capek, whose provenance is documented up to the first owner of this oilpaiting: Josef Capek dedicated it in 1935 to Vaclav Rabas on the occasion of his 50th birthday. The photographer Jiri Hecko received this painting from Rabas's heirs. Now it is part of an important private collection. This Capek's oil is reproduced in black and white in the monograph Jaromir Pecirka: Josef Capek, Prague 1961, under No. 107, with the name Gamekeeper. According to data in the archive Jaroslav Slavicek file, a photograph of this oil has been preserved in the estate of Josef Capek, which also bears the name Gamekeeper. The presented work belongs to the series of Capek's Hunters, which he has been developing since the early 1930s. It is an important motif of his so-called Orava period, when he thinks about elementary values of life. Capek did portray peasants, hunters and fishermen as genre figures, but as representatives of a spontaneous, natural relationship to life, living in accordance with the laws of nature and the cosmos. A small drawing sketch with a compositional variant of the same figure was in the estate of Josef Capek.

This exceptional painting for galleries and collectors, exemplary of the work of Josef Čapek, bears all the painterly finesse from the height of Čapek’s career. An important Czech painter, printmaker, book illustrator and author, Josef Čapek was able to fully devote himself to his work and take part in art groups during the interwar period, which was an auspicious time for him. |In 1911 he co-founded the Group of Fine Artists (members included Václav Beneš, Emil Filla and Otakar Kubín), but by late 1912 he and his brother Karel left the group to join the Mánes. In 1921 Josef Čapek moved to Tvrdošíjní (“Stubborn Ones”| other members included Rudolf Kremlička, Václav Špála and Jan Zrzavý). Starting in the early 1930s he started to draw new inspiration from Slovakia and the joys of family life. His focus on the everyday and mundane was also reflected in his form of artistic expression. His work veered towards naïve art, as his inventory of expression was reduced to a brilliant outline and he relied on modern, positive colors. In this composition showing a couple of male figures standing opposite each other at a bar and a third figure in the background, the viewer can sense their simple origins from their work clothes. Another animating element in the painting are the two glasses and the bottle of alcohol. The painting does not use its contemporary modernism and social function to establish a position in the interwar avant-garde or orthodoxy in art, but it remains a pure personal testament in which the greatest value is freedom. Provenance: From the estate of the first owner, Dr. Karel Steinbach, a friend of the Čapek bothers and member of Karel Čapek's 'Friday Men” group.
