          Roosters - Vincenzo Caprile

          Est: €1,500 - €1,800

Oil painting on cardboard, 19th century, Italian school, depicting roosters. Dimensions inside the frame: 40x30 cm. Dimensions including the frame: 52x42 cm. Signed at the bottom right by Vincenzo Caprile. The work is in good condition, with a later period frame. Vincenzo Caprile was born in Naples in 1856. Coming from a wealthy family, he was able to dedicate himself to studying painting from a very young age. He was a student of Gabriele Smargiassi and Achille Carrillo at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples, completing his training with Domenico Morelli. Thanks to his association with Alceste Campriani and Federico Rossano, he approached the School of Resina, thus experimenting with the direct rendering of landscape and nature. From 1873 until the late 1920s, he participated in the Neapolitan Promoters exhibitions, where he was a member of the artistic jury and the permanent committee between 1890 and 1894, and vice-president in 1911. He debuted at the 1873 Promotrice with the painting A Posillipo. In 1874 he exhibited Strada alle paludi, in 1875 Il crepuscolo d’autunno, and the following year A Torre Annunziata and Ricordo di Torre del Greco. He participated in national and international exhibitions, including those in Milan, Melbourne, Venice, Rome, Berlin, etc. In 1888 he became an honorary professor at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples. In the same year, he stayed in Buenos Aires, where he received many portrait commissions from the most important local politicians. After returning to Naples in 1890, he devoted himself almost exclusively to landscape painting and was the official portraitist of the Savoy family. In his later years, he was honored with solo exhibitions at the Permanente of Naples (1924), in Milan (1933), and in Livorno (1934). In 1927 he exhibited together with Vincenzo Gemito and Vincenzo Migliaro at the Pesaro Gallery. He died in Naples on June 23, 1936.

Poggi.

(Naples 1856–1936) A Market Scene in Naples, signed V. Caprile Napoli, oil on canvas, 100 x 150 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Germany. Vincenzo Caprile began his artistic career as a student of the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, where he studied under Gabriele Smargiassi (1798–1882) and Domenico Morelli (1823–1901). The present scene is infused with movement and dynamism and provides an example of the artist’s exceptional talent for capturing scenes from everyday life. The central figure, a young mother selling oranges, tenderly holds her child in her arms amidst the market bustle. Here, Caprile masterfully renders the colourful clothing and picturesque ambience of the southern market. Caprile enjoyed great success during his lifetime and took part in several national and international exhibitions. He debuted at the Promotrice di Belle Arti in 1873 and achieved public acclaim in the IV Esposizione Nazionale di Belle Arti of 1880 in Turin. After this breakthrough, his paintings were widely exhibited internationally, including in Berlin, London, St. Petersburg, Paris, and Buenos Aires. He later became the official portraitist of the house of Savoy in 1911.

Of Neapolitan origins and pupil, among others, of Domenico Morelli, became the official portraitist of the House of Savoy, after having worked, among other cities, in Capri and Venice. The drawing presented here dates back to the Venetian period, where we see Caprile competing with a subject in which her more intimate trait stands out, especially when compared to the famous portraits of young commoners, predominant in her production. The proposed work falls with spontaneity and happy realization in the frankly popular portrait vein that characterizes all of his production. Signed and dated lower right "V. Caprile Venezia '98". Within frame. Source :Catalogue Finarte late 80s, lot 43.
