CLIFTON KARHU American-born, Kyoto-based, 1927-2007 woodblock print circular (tondo-format) woodblock print depicting a snow-laden traditional Japanese kura (storehouse) glimpsed through a screen of bare, snow-dusted tree trunks and branches. The composition is built from Karhu's characteristic bold, flattened planes of color capturing the hushed stillness of a winter village with distant mountains beyond. Pencil-numbered 10/160, titled "The Kura" in the lower margin, and signed and dated "C. Karhu '84" lower right. Presented under glass in a circular mat.

A vibrant woodblock print by artist Clifton Karhu, featuring bold architectural lines and a colorful, stylized perspective of a traditional Japanese streetscape. Numbered 12/80 lower left, titled middle bottom, signed lower right. Framed. Overall Size: 25 x 25 in. Sight Size: 17 1/2 x 17 1/2 in. Clifton Karhu (1927–2007) was an American-born artist known for his distinctive modern interpretations of traditional Japanese woodblock prints. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, Karhu moved to Japan in the 1950s, where he studied traditional printmaking techniques and eventually became deeply immersed in Japanese culture. Rather than working with a collaborative publishing system typical of classical ukiyo-e prints, he designed, carved, and printed many of his works himself, producing bold, textured scenes of Japanese city streets, temples, markets, and seasonal landscapes. His prints are recognized for their rich colors, dramatic compositions, and expressive use of line and wood grain. Over several decades in Japan—primarily in Kyoto—Karhu exhibited widely and gained an international following, becoming one of the best-known Western artists working in the Japanese woodblock print tradition.
