        Carle (Eric) The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first edition, first printing with complete number line 1-5 on copyright p. and "A3450" to rear board, colour illustrations by the author, ink ownership inscription to title, with additional reprint title page signed by the author with a drawing of a Caterpillar loosely inserted, original pictorial boards, light rubbing to spine tips, very faint toning to head, else fine, dust-jacket with "A3450" code to lower panel and 2 paragraphs to front flap, front flap price-clipped at head and foot, spine tips and corners a little rubbed, light creasing to head and foot, but near-fine generally, oblong 4to, Cleveland, World Publishing, 1969. ⁂ A superb example of this famous children's rarity. Though reprinted thousands of times and ultimately selling tens of millions of copies, first editions of The Very Hungry Caterpillar are rare in the dust-jacket in good condition. All but one known copy in the dust-jacket are price-clipped and this was likely undertaken by the publisher's themselves prior to release.

        Composition (2011) Signed lower right Annotated For Hens with Love on your retirement lower left and dated 2011 lower centre Hand-painted paper collage on cardboard, 31.9 x 25.4 cm (image size) / 50.8 x 37.9 cm (sheet size) Note: Eric Carle is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Rupsje Nooitgenoeg) and many other enchanting picture books for children. In 2002, he founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts. He steadfastly refuses to sell his work, so few of his pictures ever come on the market. The work on offer is made up of gouache-painted paper which has been cut out and processed into a collage in the same colour patterns as his most famous character. Along the bottom edge the text "For Hens" is written; Hens Gottmer was the publisher of Carle's books in the Netherlands (J.H. Gottmer/H.J.W. Becht B.V., Haarlem).         ERIC CARLE. "Lion." Unpublished artwork created as a contest prize, circa 1995. Blue felt tip on pink paper. 215x280 mm; 8 1/2x11 inches. Signed "Eric Carle" in lower left image. Hinged to blue board with window matte. This original doodle was awarded to a second grade class that won a nationwide contest to design and construct a fabric banner incorporating six of Eric Carles' books. Carle honored the winning class with a personal visit to their school, where he apparently created this doodle as a prize.After the contest, the winning banner was hung alongside other submissions in Massachusetts before being exhibited in Children's Museums across the United States and Japan for the next three years. The banner now hangs in the front hall of the school alongside a photograph of the class posing with their design.
