        JOHN CARLIN New York/Pennsylvania, 1813-1891 Miniature portrait on ivory of Helen Smith (Beeckman) Graham wearing a black dress and vibrant red shawl. Signed mid-left "J Carlin". Sitter identified on accompanying typewritten note "Helen Smith (Beeckman) Graham born Jan 15, 1817 mar. Nov. 22, 1836 died Aug 5, 1896 Painted by J. Carlin in 1848 when she was thirty-one years old.". Genealogical research indicates she was born in New York City, outlived her husband and all her children, died in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and is buried in Chicago. A copy of Carlin's record book held at the New-York Historical Society lists a portrait for "Mrs. Graham", number 1085, May 1848, for a charge of $20. Housed in a folding case.

Signed front and back, but incorrectly titled verso because after painting this work, Carlin stretched another canvas over it and painted “Contentment”, an interior genre scene which he then titled and signed verso, which was actually the back of this painting (discovered during conservation of “Contentment" by Yost Restoration in 1997").         John Carlin Young Boy Interior Genre Painting

        New York, Pennsylvania 1813-1891 Depicts a young boy kneeling on a cane chair with elbows on the table staring at a footed center bowl full of apples. Carlin studied art in Philadelphia before travelling to London to study art in the National Museum. He later travelled to France studying under Paul Delaroche before his return to the United States to work as a miniature portrait painter in New York. Born deaf, Carlin was also a poet, publishing his work "The Deaf-Mute's Lament," in the Philadelphia Saturday Courier, and helped to raise money for the St. Ann Church for the Deaf in New York.

        Family in an interior with water view beyond. Signed and dated 1879 lower right. In a good 19th century frame. Titled "Contentment." Tacked to replacement stretcher according to previous conservation by Yost Conservation in 1997; painting underneath purported to be Egyptian scene that Carlin tacked another canvas over and painted "Contentment" on, then signed and titled back of canvas with Egyptian scene on. Dimensions: (Frame) H 21.5" x W 25.75", (Painting) H 10" x W 14" Condition: With replacement stretcher. Craquelure visible throughout. Looks to possibly have been rolled at one time. Clean varnish, no noticeable restorations. Frame in overall good condition.
