The son of Victorian painter George Carline and brother to fellow artists Richard and Hilda Carline, Sydney belonged to what contemporaries, including Henry Lamb, called those remarkable Carlines. Despite their artistic promise, the family could not fully finance formal training for all three siblings. Sydney, however, managed to fund his own studies at the Slade School of Fine Art.In 1912, he travelled with Richard to Paris, where they studied under the eccentric Canadian artist Percyval Tudor-Hart at his academy on Rue d'Assas in Montparnasse. When Tudor-Hart relocated the school to London, the Carline family moved to Hampstead-an area that would often appear in their paintings.With the outbreak of war in 1914, Sydney felt compelled to enlist, influenced by the sight of his peers joining the army. Commissioned as a temporary second lieutenant, he was wounded during his third mission. After recovering from a leg injury, he returned to serve, this time as a fighter pilot flying the Sopwith Camel F.1-the most successful British fighter aircraft of the war.Some of Sydney's most powerful works stem from his wartime experiences in Italy, where he flew combat missions against the Austro-Hungarian Air Service. By late 1918, he had been appointed an official war artist for the Royal Air Force, producing dramatic airborne perspectives that captured the new reality of aerial warfare.

Brother-in-law to Stanley Spencer, Sydney Carline was also educated at the Slade (1907-10) before becoming a war artist attached to the RAF during the Great War. He exhibited at the Royal Academy both before and after the War, before his untimely death from pneumonia in 1929.
