Depicts an auburn-haired young woman wearing a white lace mantilla and dress, and holding flowers in her dress skirt. Additional inscription in pen en verso of frame: "Young Woman by Fred Green Carpenter / Loaned by St. Louis Artists Guild." Gold colored metal tag affixed to front of frame reads "Young Woman", "Fred Green Carpenter 1882-1965". Whitewashed Rococo style carved frame with beige linen liner. 39 1/2" x 32 sight, 45" x 38" framed. Provenance: Private Michigan collection. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): Fred G. Carpenter was known for his brilliant use of color and curvilinear forms, often used to depict figures in exotic settings. Born in Nashville, he moved to St. Louis where he studied at Washington University's School of Fine Arts and later, the Académie Julian in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens and and the Colarossi Academy under Richard E. Miller. Carpenter's painting "The Sisters" won an Honorable Mention at the Paris Salon in 1910. He also won a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy 1908 1931. Case Antiques, Inc. Auctions & AppraisalsFred Greene Carpenter (Missouri, Tennessee, 1882 - 1965) was active/lived in Missouri, Tennessee. Signed lower left. With Pennsylvana Academy of Fine Art Exhibition stamp verso. Signed lower left. Sight size: 34.5 x 28 inches. Fred Carpenter exhibited mostly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (1908-31), where one of his works may be found today: Rose Color, Scarlet and Black, a theatrical scene dated 1912. Carpenter was commissioned to paint lunettes in the Missouri State Capitol, in 1921, then he took a year to execute the actual canvases in their summer home in Wisconsin: The Battle of Sacramento and The Entry into Havana. This artist, born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1882, moved to St. Louis and entered Washington University's School of Fine Arts in 1900. He spent the summer of 1902 in Paris, then worked as a guide to the St. Louis World's Fair's art exhibition, before becoming a faculty member at his alma mater. He would remain there until 1952. Soon Carpenter returned to Paris to study at the Académie Julian (under Jean-Paul Laurens and others) and at the Colarossi Academy, where his teacher Richard E. Miller became an important influence. In 1910, Carpenter's painting The Sisters won an Honorable Mention at the Paris Salon.
