Bibliography: Reproduced in "La villa Abd-el-Tif: Un demi-siècle de vie artistique en Algérie, 1907-1962", E. Cazenave, ed. Association Abd-El-Tif, 2002, p. 116. French painter and illustrator Léon Carré is known for his contribution to Orientalism, which marked his artistic career. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he studied under such masters as Léon Bonnat. His career took a decisive turn when he discovered Algeria, where he settled and found an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Carré immersed himself in Algerian culture and landscapes, paying homage to the richness of local scenes, from striking portraits to poetic compositions. His residency at the Villa Abd-el-Tif, a famous art center that welcomed many Orientalist artists, was a pivotal moment in his career. This stimulating environment enabled him to exchange ideas with other creators, enriching his approach and nourishing his inspirations. In addition to his painting, Carré is known for his etchings, which add an extra dimension to his reputation as an illustrator. His illustrations for books such as Les Mille et Une Nuits have consolidated his reputation, highlighting his talent for capturing the magic and exoticism of the Orient. Léon Carré frequented and collaborated with other Orientalist artists, and took part in artistic circles where ideas and techniques were exchanged. His wife, Ketty Carré, herself an artist, played an important role in his life and career, accompanying him and sharing his interest in Algerian art and culture. His Algerian works, imbued with dreams and escapism, continue to bear witness to the wonder he feels and infuses into his creations.

"In 1909, a scholarship brought Leon Carre to the Villa Abdelatif in Algiers, where he spent the rest of his life. A talented draughtsman and colourist, Carre sought to convey the emotion of the artist's vision in a blend of detail and soft pastel shades. One of at least two posters created by Carré to promote travel to this historically important Algerian city. An Arab Sultanate from 1282-1553, Tlemcen became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1555 and was taken over by the French in 1842. Carré moved to Algeria in 1909 and stayed for the rest of his life, where as "a talented draughtsman and colourist, [he] sought to convey the emotion of the artist's vision in a blend of detail and soft, pastel shades." LÉON CARRÉ (1878-1942) TLEMCEN / PLM. 1929. 39 1/2x24 3/4 inches, 100x63. Lith. Baconnier, Alger. Condition B+ / A-: restored loss in bottom left corner; minor creases at edges. One of at least two posters created by Carre to promote travel to this historically important Algerian city. An Arab Sultanate from 1282-1553, Tlemcen became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1555 and was taken over by the French in 1842. Carre moved to Algeria in 1909 and stayed for the rest of his life, where as "a talented draughtsman and colourist, [he] sought to convey the emotion of the artist's vision in a blend of detail and soft, pastel shades." Orientalist p. 36.
