Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (French, 1824-1887), Cupid and Sleeping Psyche, c. 1870s, bronze on a marble base

                    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (French, 1824-1887) Cupid and Sleeping Psyche c. 1870s Bronze on a marble base Dimensions: 17 in. (H) By the time Carrier-Belleuse produced this piece, he had already secured his reputation as a highly respected Parisian Romantic sculptor. In 1867, he was awarded the Medal of Honor at the Paris Salon - the highest artistic commendation in Paris at the time. However, the beginning of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 compelled Carrier-Belleuse to move his family to Brussels. Whilst they were subsequently able to avoid the dreadful trials of Commune and the second siege of Paris, Carrier was separated from his friends and colleagues. By 1871, several of Carrier-Belleuse’s assistants (including Rodin) joined him in Brussels, and by the end of the year they returned to Paris. It is likely that Cupid and Psyche was conceived during this period. The dramatic, Rococo-esque figures exude passion and melancholia, poignantly echoing the calamity that was taking place in Carrier-Belleuse’s birthplace.

                    Est: €8,000 - €8,500

ALBERT CARRIER BELLEUSE (France, 1824-1887). "Neapolitan dancer with mandolin". Bronze. Signed. With unidentified founder's stamp. Measurements: 99 cm. The mastery in the execution of this Neapolitan dancer testifies the savoir faire of Albert Carrier Belleuse in the sculptural plastic. The graceful movements of the jovial musician are balanced and graceful despite the fact that at that precise moment he rests all his weight on one leg. The fine but precise treatment of the face and the bare torso, attentive to the anatomical qualities, are reflected in the delicate mandolin he holds in his left hand, perfectly detailed both in the strings and in the structure of the instrument. French sculptor and draughtsman trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, renowned for his neoclassical sculptures of great realism and delicacy. In this case, the sculptor worked on a set showing a group of four "putti" playing with a goat. One of the cherubs sounds a tambourine while being pulled by the cloth by another of the children in an attitude of movement. It is a balanced work where the representation of movement is an essential point of the work itself. In his first stage of training he was a disciple of the medalist David d'Angers, moving later to England, to return to France definitively in 1855. He made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1851, but did not become famous until 1861, when he presented his group "Salve Regina", a work that won him the third medal. In 1866 he obtained the first medal with his work "Angelica", and in 1867 he obtained the medal of honor of the Salon, besides being decorated with the Legion of Honor. In his sculpture workshop, he worked for a long time as the marble artist Auguste Rodin. In 1876 he was appointed director of artistic works at the National Porcelain Factory in Sèvres and in 1884 he published "L'application de la figure humaine à la decoration et à l'ornementation -industrielles", a collection of two hundred drawings in which he depicts anthropomorphic objects based on his ideas about the decorative arts. Some of his works can be found in the Prado Museum.

CARRIER-BELLEUSE, Albert Ernest, (French, 1824-1887): "Harmonie" patinated bronze figure of the muse seated on a pedestal, lyre in her hand, signed on column near base, metal tag on front of base, overall 24.5" h. x 13.5" x 13". From Duck & dolphin antiques in Key West, Florida. Paul Cox (1941-2019) was the driving force behind Duck & Dolphin Antiques, started his treasured collection in Manhattan in 1963. He would eventually move his shop several times through New Jersey, the new Hope Pennsylvania area, and finally Key West Florida. He saw many styles and movements come and go. There was not one he was not an enthusiast of. Growing up in the era of “populux”, he got his start as a dealer in the art nouveau revival of the 1960s under the tutelage of the great Lillian Nassau. He went on to dealing in the highest quality of French period antiques.

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) (After) - Pair of French Bronzed Torcheres Pair of French Torcheres 54 1/2 in. (138.5 cm) high After the artist, late 19th century. Inscribed ÔCARRIER' on the waisted bases. Modeled as draped maidens holding urns to their heads. Carrier-Belleuse is the name used by this sculptor--born Carrier de Belleuse--on his mature pieces, after initially signing works "A. Carrier." His career began firmly in the applied arts, with his apprenticeship at thirteen to a Parisian ciseleur today known as Bauchery (or Beauchery), and he did subsequent work for Jacques-Henri Fauconnier and Fannire Frres. His formal education took place at the Petite Ecole--chosen after an unhappy stint at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1840 under the direction of David d'Angers, his official master. While at the Petite Ecole in the 1840s, Carrier-Belleuse began his lifelong practice of providing commercial houses with models for edition, as statuettes or as ornament for functional pieces. Around 1850, the sculptor moved to England as a designer for Minton China Works, at Stoke-upon-Trent, as well as for Wedgewood, Coalbrookdale Ironworks, and Graham & Jackson furniture makers. Even after returning to Paris in 1855, he continued to send models to British firms throughout his life.
