    Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) L’enlèvement d’Hippodamie Modèle créé en 1877-1879 ; circa 1880 Bronze à patine brun vert nuancé Signé “ CARRIER-BELLEUSE ” sur la terrasse Porte un cachet “ BRONZE GARANTI AU TITRE PARIS ” Titré “ L’ENLÈVEMENT ” dans un cartouche à l’avant H. 65 cm, terrasse L. 48 x P. 24 cm Inspiré du Livre XII des Métamorphoses d’Ovide, une version en terre cuite de ce groupe figurant l’enlèvement d’Hippodamie, le jour de ses noces avec Pélops, par le centaure Eurityon, est exposée en juillet 1871 par Carrier-Belleuse à Bruxelles. En 1874 à l’occasion des prestigieuses Courses du Bois de Boulogne, Carrier-Belleuse, en collaboration avec la maison Christofle, réalise un trophée en argent. Le groupe rencontre un vif succès. Carrier-Belleuse en réalise alors une seconde version en vue de sa commercialisation. Pour cela, il simplifie la composition : le manteau du centaure disparait, la jarre de vin renversée est déplacée et le centaure relâche son étreinte. Ces modifications confèrent au groupe une esthétique plus néoclassique évoquant les grands groupes de la Renaissance, tels que l’Enlèvement de Déjanire ou encore l’Enlèvement des Sabines de Jean de Bologne. Si la figure d’Hippodamie correspond aux formes voluptueuses propres aux figures féminines de Carrier-Belleuse, l’expression exagérée et la musculature gonflée du centaure suggère l’éventuelle participation d’Auguste Rodin, alors présent à l’atelier bruxellois du maître. Le jeune sculpteur avait notamment travaillé en 1870 avec son maître à la Vasque des Titans dont les morphotypes sont sans conteste à rapprocher de celui du centaure Eurityon.     The finely cast bronze figure depicting Diana, known in Greek mythology as Artemis, standing in contrapposto, lightly draped and holding a crossbow and hunting horn, with a quiver of arrows at her side, her foot resting upon a slain wild boar, raised on a naturalistic base with circular plinth, signed Carrier-Belleuse to the base, the surface with a rich reddish-brown patina. The model represents Diana the huntress, the Roman counterpart of the Greek goddess Artemis, associated with the hunt, wilderness, and the moon, here shown in a triumphant pose over game, combining classical mythology with the elegant naturalism characteristic of the French Second Empire and early Third Republic sculptural tradition. Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887) was one of the most important French sculptors of the 19th century and a teacher of Auguste Rodin, producing numerous mythological and decorative bronzes of high technical quality.
