Pastels on paper cm. 29x24,8. Framed On the reverse of the support board, protecting the paper, an old ink inscription reads: “ROSALBA CARRIERA”. The pastel has the typical eighteenth-century frame associated with Rosalba Carriera’s works in the collection of Augustus III, Elector of Saxony (who assembled around 150 pastels by the Venetian artist, today largely preserved in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden), complete with the metal plaque bearing inventory number “83”. There are small tears along the lower margin of the paper. The pastel most likely depicts Faustina Bordoni, the celebrated Venetian singer and wife of the composer Johann Adolf Hasse, a friend of Rosalba Carriera and portrayed by her on several occasions. In this case, the artist chose to depict her crowned with laurel, as a sort of allegorical figure of Poetry. Of particular note is the proximity to the Portrait of Faustina in the Museo di Ca’ Rezzonico, Venice, and especially to the version in the Dresden Museum, which likewise features the motif of laurel leaves and pearl earrings. Agnew & Sons, London La giovane donna effigiata, di cui purtroppo non è nota l’identità, è raffigurata a mezzo busto, leggermente di tre quarti, con lo sguardo diretto verso l’osservatore e un’espressione composta. L’incarnato etereo, modellato con morbide sfumature, contrasta con il fondo scuro neutro, secondo una formula tipica dell’artista. La protagonista indossa un sontuoso abito in broccato impreziosito da ricami con una leggera scollatura velata da un morbido scialle bianco una stola di un blu brillante, resa con vibranti passaggi tonali, ricade sulle spalle, riprendendo il colore del nastro che le adorna i capelli, e un paio di orecchini pendenti che riflettono delicatamente la luce. Tra le mani regge un bouquet di fiori dai toni vivaci, elemento decorativo ma dal valore simbolico, che allude alla grazia e alla fugacità della bellezza. L’opera si distingue per la precisa resa fisionomica e la qualità vellutata del tratto, caratteristiche che hanno reso nella prima metà del Settecento Rosalba Carriera una delle protagoniste assolute del ritratto a pastello presso le maggiori corti in tutta Europa. Il suo stile è il più attento e penetrante della società veneziana ed europea del Settecento, fondamentale per lo sviluppo della ritrattistica francese. Con i suoi ritratti ha scandagliato in modo impareggiabile ideali di grazia e di eleganza di un’epoca: il canto del cigno della stessa nobiltà europea che dopo qualche decennio avrebbe perso il proprio status all’interno della società rinnovata dalle idee della Rivoluzione Francese. Educata a coltivare le arti, come si conveniva alle ragazze del tempo, Rosalba e le due sorelle studiarono musica, letteratura, pittura, ricamo e lingue straniere. Presto Rosalba si dedicò allo studio della pittura, specialmente nelle miniature e nei ritratti. Diventata famosa per la delicatezza delle sue miniature, cominciò a ritrarre le personalità più imminenti dell'epoca usando la tecnica del pastello, in cui primeggiava in Europa. Grazie alle sfumature delicatissime e ai segni di colore puro che questa tecnica permette, nelle sue opere i committenti trovavano sia un'estrema delicatezza nei vellutati incarnati sia la precisione realistica dei particolari. Grazie al suo successo e alla conoscenza delle lingue, fu accolta dalle corti di tutta l'Europa, dove accresceva la sua fama dipingendo miniature e ritratti per le famiglie reali e per la nobiltà di corte. Morì a Venezia poco più che ottantenne, il 15 aprile 1757, dopo un decennio doloroso per l’avvenuta cecità. Grazie a lei è cresciuta una intera generazione di artisti, spesso donne, dedite al ritratto eseguito a pastello: Giovanna e Angela Carriera, Felicita Sartori Hoffmann, Margherita Terzi, Marianna Carlevarijs e Gianantonio Lazzari. Rosalba studierte zunächst an der Akademie in Rom, wandte sich jedoch auf Anraten des Malers Christian Cole der Pastellmalerei zu. Die Beliebtheit von Damenbildnissen dieser Technik versteht man, wenn man erkennt, wie sehr der pudrige Pastellauftrag mit der Kosmetik der damaligen Zeit im Einklang stand. Auch die Zartheit dieses Malmaterials kam der Vorstellung von Weiblichkeit enorm entgegen. Der Ruhm der Künstlerin verschaffte ihr Aufträge von höchsten Persönlichkeiten der Zeit, darunter: Kurprinz Friedrich Christian von Sachsen (1739), Maria Josepha von Österreich (um 1720), Ludwig XV von Frankreich als Dauphin (1720/21), Kaiserin Wilhelmine Amalie (1730), der Dichter Pietro Metastasio (1730) oder das Bildnis von Antoine Watteau (1721, Pastell, Treviso, Museo Civico). Rosalba Carriera (Italian, 1673-1757) Portrait of Coulson Fellowes (1696-1769), head and shoulders, in a brown coat and white stock, wearing a long wig pastel 54.5 x 41cm Provenance: The portrait was the property of sitter's younger brother William Fellowes (1705-1775), Founder of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, Thence in the collection of family portraits at Shotesham Park until the sale of the house and estate after the death of Major Charles Fellowes in 1979, Thence to the present owner, thereby remaining in the family. It is recorded by Rosalba herself that Coulson Fellowes visited her studio in May 1724. In Rosalba’s correspondence and diaries published by Bernardina Sani (Rosalba Carriera: Catalogue Raisonné, Italian Edition, September 2007, Vol. II, p.783), it is noted that on 9th May of that year she began the portrait “Incominciato in pastelle M.r Felo Inglese” and on 15th May “Avuto da M.r Felo cecchini 22”. Literature: John Ingamells, Dictionary of British and Irish Travellers, Yale University Press, 1997, p.351; Neil Jeffares, Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800, Rosalba Carriera, Named sitters A-K, p.14, J.21.0511 (online edition) The eldest son of the barrister William Fellowes of Eggesford, Devon, Coulson Fellowes matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1716 and was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1723. He subsequently embarked on a Grand Tour of France and Italy from 1723-1725. In early 1724, upon the death of his father, Fellowes inherited the manor of Eggesford. This perhaps provided the catalyst for him to commission his portrait for it was soon after that the present likeness was captured in Venice by Rosalba Carriera, one of the most fashionable artists of the age. Rosalba recorded the sitting in her remarkably informative diary, noting that she began the pastel on 9th May 1724, with payment of 22 zecchini being received on 15th May. This resultant elegant study is a very fine example of the innovative portraiture of the Venetian artist, exhibiting the spontaneity, directness and intimacy which propelled Rosalba to international stardom at the beginning of the 18th century. Indeed, the execution of the present work followed the artist’s significant stay in Paris from 1719 to 1720, a sojourn which confirmed her success as a pioneering portrait painter. In Paris, Rosalba was a guest of Pierre Crozat, the King’s treasurer, and met Rigaud, Largillière, Watteau and other artists and connoisseurs, becoming greatly admired by the aristocracy and the court. Her close relationship with Watteau reflects Rosalba’s adoption of a typically rococo spirit, conducive to being captured in pastel, which became the key to her renown. After her return to Venice from Paris, she sent her famous Nymphe de la suite d'Apollon (now in the Musée du Louvre) to the Académie which was praised by the Mercure galant in 1722 for its ‘gracefulness’ and ‘lightness’ of touch. Such qualities are apparent in Rosalba’s portrait of Coulson Fellowes which also demonstrates her direct and personal response to her clients. Rosalba’s portrayals did not reflect their social status but rather an acute eye for physiognomy enabled her to provide both a mirror image of her subjects whilst simultaneously entering into the minds of her sitters to imbue her studies with psychological insight, the face becoming the focus of attention. It was also in the early 1720s that Rosalba’s popularity in England flourished as a result of numerous portraits like the present example returning with British aristocrats and members of landed families from the Grand Tour. She wrote to Nicolas Vleughels in 1721 that she had been ‘attaqué par des Angles’. That her small scale works on paper were quick to execute and easy to transport undoubtedly contributed to their popularity. However, it is clear Rosalba went to great pains to send them safely as noted by William Bentick in 1727: “It will come in a little black frame with a glass over it. And it must be left so, she [Rosalba] herself desired me that it might be left just as it is because taking it out might easily spoil the Picture. And nothing moist must come near it.” From 1723, Rosalba’s diary also records several commissions from Joseph Smith, the British consul in Venice, who possibly introduced her to Fellowes in his role as a great patron of painters. Fellowes would later become Member of Parliament for Huntingdonshire from 1741-1761. Upon his death in 1769, he left money to Addenbrookes Hospital, founded a few years earlier. 70 x 57cm framed

KLEOPATRA Pastell auf Papier, auf Leinwand doubliert. 44,5 x 36,5 cm. Hinter Glas in dekorativem vergoldetem Rahmen. Vor gräulichem Hintergrund das Brustbildnis einer jungen schönen Frau, mit ihren glänzenden Augen und dem zarten feinen Inkarnat nach links blickend. Sie trägt eine kleine Kopfbedeckung aus Spitze mit einer Feder und einer Perlenkette, dazu einen großen Perlenohrring. Zudem ein feines dünnes Gewand mit weitem Dekolleté und blauem Überwurf, in ihrer linken Hand mit abgespreiztem kleinem Finger hält sie eine Perle. Damit lässt sie sich als Kleopatra identifizieren. Der Legende nach soll sie während eines üppigen Banketts zu Ehren von Antonius den Gästen demonstriert haben, dass sie ihrem Reichtum keinen Wert beimaß, indem sie eine Perle von unschätzbarem Wert aus ihrem Ohrring genommen hatte, in einem Glas Wein aufgelöste und diesen dann trank. Das vorliegende Pastell zeigt die junge entzückende Frau voller Anmut und ist mit ähnlichen Pastellen der Künstlerin vergleichbar. Es kann auf die Mitte der 1720er-Jahre datiert werden. Rosalba studierte zunächst an der Akademie in Rom, wandte sich jedoch auf Anraten des Malers Chrisian Cole der Pastellmalerei zu. Die Beliebtheit von Damenbildnissen dieser Technik versteht man, wenn man erkennt, wie sehr der pudrige Pastellauftrag mit der Kosmetik der damaligen Zeit im Einklang stand. Auch die Zartheit dieses Malmaterials kam der Vorstellung von Weiblichkeit enorm entgegen. Der Ruhm der Künstlerin verschaffte ihr Aufträge von höchsten Persönlichkeiten der Zeit, darunter: Kurprinz Friedrich Christian von Sachsen (1739), Maria Josepha von Österreich (um 1720), Ludwig XV. von Frankreich als Dauphin (1720/21), Kaiserin Wilhelmine Amalie (1730), der Dichter Pietro Metastasio (1730) oder das Bildnis von Antoine Watteau (1721, Pastell, Treviso, Museo Civico). Un tema questo sovente richiesto a Rosalba sia dai collezionisti veneziani (una serie appartenne anche al console di Sua Maestà Britannica a Venezia, Joseph Smith) e soprattutto dai committenti di area tedesca. Dell'importanza della committenza che sta alle spalle delle opere di Sua proprietà è ragionevole indizio la dimensione insolitamente grande dei pastelli e la presenza delle mani, rara nelle opere di Rosalba e realizzate, pare, solo su specifica richiesta del committente. La conferma della certa appartenenza dei pastelli a Rosalba trova appoggio nell'esistenza di un'incisione probabilmente tardo settecentesca che riproduce in controparte la figura dell'Autunno e reca il nome della pittrice veneziana quale ideatrice dell'immagine. Ma tale conferma risulta addirittura superflua a fronte dell'eccellente qualità dei pastelli, che a pieno titolo possono essere considerati nel novero dei capolavori prodotti da Rosalba, celeberrima nell'intera Europa per la sua produzione di ritratti, ma certo non inferiore nell'esecuzione di opere di soggetto allegorico o religioso. KAISERIN MARIA THERESIA VON ÖSTERREICH ALS SCHÄFERIN Pastell auf Papier. 55 x 42 cm. Verso oben betitelt und unten Künstlernennung. Hinter Glas in dekorativem Rahmen. Dreiviertelbildnis der Kaiserin von Österreich vor neutralem Hintergrund in einem hellen, prachtvollen Kleid, teils mit Spitze an den Ärmelenden und am Kragen verziert. Sie trägt einen dunklen kurzen Umhang mit weißen Muscheln versehen und einen dazu passenden breiten Pilgerhut mit einer Muschel. Zudem hält sie in ihrer linken Hand einen langen Stock mit daran hängendem Beutel und in der rechten Hand ein Buch. Die Darstellung weist eher auf eine Pilgerin mit den typischen Jakobsmuscheln und Wanderstab hin, als auf eine Schäferin, wie die Beschriftung auf der Rückseite des Werkes. (Venezia, 1673 - 1757) Ritratto di dama Tempera su carta, cm 9X6,8 La qualità delle stesure e la freschezza cromatica inducono a supportare l'attribuzione collezionistica dell'opera a Rosalba Carriera, celebre ritrattista dell'età rococò le cui opere furono ricercate in tutta Europa. Interprete raffinata degli ideali della mondana società settecentesca, la pittrice si distinse nella pittura a pastello impiegando una tecnica personalissima, ottenendo effetti di serica luminosità dal peculiare carattere atmosferico. Secondo le fonti, però, la sua produzione iniziale era miniaturistica, realizzando piccoli ritratti con tratti veloci, liberi e giustapposti secondo la tradizione pittorica veneta. Con i suoi ritratti ha scandagliato in modo impareggiabile ideali di grazia e di eleganza di un’epoca: il canto del cigno della nobiltà europea che dopo qualche decennio avrebbe perso il proprio status all’interno della società rinnovata dalle idee illuministiche. Educata a coltivare le arti, come si conveniva alle ragazze del tempo, Rosalba e le due sorelle studiarono musica, letteratura, pittura, ricamo e lingue straniere. Presto Rosalba si dedicò allo studio della pittura, specialmente nelle miniature e nei ritratti, approfondendo e riscoprendo la tecnica del pastello, all’epoca dimenticata. Diventata famosa per la delicatezza delle sue miniature, cominciò a ritrarre le personalità più imminenti dell'epoca usando la tecnica del pastello, in cui primeggiava in Europa. Grazie alle sfumature delicatissime e ai segni di colore puro che questa tecnica permette, nelle sue opere i committenti trovavano sia un'estrema delicatezza nei vellutati incarnati, sia la precisione realistica dei particolari. Il successo abbinato alla conoscenza delle lingue le aprirono la strada presso molte corti d'Europa, dove accresceva la sua fama dipingendo miniature e ritratti per le famiglie reali e per la nobiltà di corte. Morì a Venezia poco più che ottantenne, il 15 aprile 1757, dopo un decennio doloroso per l’avvenuta cecità. Vor einem in blaugrau changierendem Hintergrund die lichte Gestalt einer jungen Dame als Hüftstück mit bewegt in gegeneinanderlaufenden Diagonalen geordneten weißen Spitzen und blauer Draperie, in deren Falte dezent farbige Blüten liegen, von denen Primavera eine unterhalb ihrer Nase präsentiert und weitere als Kopfputz trägt. Die hier angebotene Komposition hat Succi als Variation zweier bekannter Gemälde von Carriera erkannt, wobei sich die kleinere in der Eremitage in Sankt Petersburg (24 x 19 cm) und die größere – fast mit den Maßen des vorliegenden Werks idente – in einer Privatsammlung befindet (58 x 45,5 cm). Succi datiert das hier angebotene Gemälde auf das Ende der 1720er-Jahre. Italienische Pastellmalerin. Rosalba Carriera è tra i maggiori artisti del Settecento europeo. Viene considerata l’artista donna più grande di tutti i tempi. Il suo stile è il più attento e penetrante della società veneziana ed europea del Settecento, fondamentale per lo sviluppo della ritrattistica francese. Con i suoi ritratti ha scandagliato in modo impareggiabile ideali di grazia e di eleganza di un’epoca: il canto del cigno della nobiltà europea che dopo qualche decennio avrebbe perso il proprio status all’interno della società rinnovata dalle idee illuministiche. Educata a coltivare le arti, come si conveniva alle ragazze del tempo, Rosalba e le due sorelle studiarono musica, letteratura, pittura, ricamo e lingue straniere. Presto Rosalba si dedicò allo studio della pittura, specialmente nelle miniature e nei ritratti, approfondendo e riscoprendo la tecnica del pastello, all’epoca dimenticata. Diventata famosa per la delicatezza delle sue miniature, cominciò a ritrarre le personalità più imminenti dell'epoca usando la tecnica del pastello, in cui primeggiava in Europa. Grazie alle sfumature delicatissime e ai segni di colore puro che questa tecnica permette, nelle sue opere i committenti trovavano sia un'estrema delicatezza nei vellutati incarnati sia la precisione realistica dei particolari. Grazie al suo successo e alla conoscenza delle lingue, fu accolta dalle corti di tutta l'Europa, dove accresceva la sua fama dipingendo miniature e ritratti per le famiglie reali e per la nobiltà di corte. Morì a Venezia poco più che ottantenne, il 15 aprile 1757, dopo un decennio doloroso per l’avvenuta cecità. Portrait of the daughter of the Revedin family, where the author transcends the portrait genre to give us a fleeting snapshot of the daily life of the bourgeoisie of the time, an image full of charm and delicacy, which captures the viewer's gaze. It is a simple composition, starring a young woman dressed in a graceful dress of great subtlety that reveals her shoulders. This portrait of a young girl is a sweet interpretation of the image of a young Venetian family, but many of their portraits were very allegorical, of goddesses such as Diana, or the personification of spring or winter, or the earth, or Flora, or the four continents. This pastel may have been done during the latter part of his life in Venice, as his style is less rococo than earlier works. It is more personal and emphasizes the place rather than the clothes or flowers that adorn it. He worked it with spontaneous brushstrokes, subtle tonal differences, the use of white as a highlight in the lace of the dress and a soft, elegant and charming approach to understanding the model. At her death, this style was less popular, but it remained an important influence on artists who came after her, such as Elisabeth Vigee-Le Brun. Rosalba Carriera was a Venetian Rococo painter. In her youth she specialized in miniature portraits. Later, Carriera would become known for her pastel portraits, helping to popularize this medium in 18th century Europe. She is remembered as one of the most successful female artists of the time. Carriera was born in Venice, the daughter of Andrea Carriera, a lawyer, and Alba Foresti, an embroiderer and lace maker. The reasons that led her to found her own artistic workshop are unknown. One of her early biographers, Pierre-Jean Mariette, suggested that when the lace industry began to falter, Carriera had to find a new means of supporting herself and her family. Carriera began painting miniatures for the lids of snuff boxes and was one of the first painters to use ivory instead of vellum as a medium for the miniatures. Soon she also began to paint pastel portraits. Among the portraits of her early period are those of Maximilian II of Bavaria, Frederick IV of Denmark, the "Artist and her sister Naneta" (Uffizi) and Augustus the Strong, king of Poland and Elector of Saxony, who acquired a large collection of her pastels. In 1704, she was named Accademico di merito by the Accademia romana di San Luca, a title reserved for non-Roman painters. Between 1720 and 1721, Carriera worked in Paris, where her work was in great demand. During his stay in Paris, Carriera was the guest of the great art aficionado and collector Pierre Crozat. She painted Watteau, all the royalty and nobility, from the King and the Regent to the very youngest, and was elected a member of the Academy by acclamation. In the short time she spent in Paris, Carriera's work helped shape the new aristocratic tastes of the court and, by extension, the tastes of Parisians. Her freedom, colorfulness and charm were injected into the Rococo style (of which she was the image), which soon dominated the arts. Despite her triumph in Paris, in 1721 she returned to her home on the Grand Canal in Venice. In 1730, Carriera made a long journey to the royal court in Vienna (Austria). There, Emperor Charles VI became his benefactor and was fully committed to supporting his work.

Carriera war eine der ersten Künstlerinnen, die zu Lebzeiten europaweiten Ruhm erntete. Ihr Talent wurde in jungen Jahren entdeckt und gefördert, sie studierte an der Accademia di San Luca in Rom und dann bei Antonio Balestra in Venedig. Seit 1704 wandte sich Carriera der damals noch recht jungen Gattung der Pastellmalerei zu und sie trug wesentlich dazu bei, dass diese Technik zu einer geschätzten Art der Malerei wurde. 1705 ernannte sie die Kunstakademie San Luca in Rom zu ihrem Mitglied (eine außergewöhnlich hohe Auszeichnung für eine Frau), 1721 folgte die Académie Royale in Paris. Wie gefragt die Künstlerin war, zeigen die vielen Bildnisse von Fürsten der regierenden Herrscherhäuser Europas. Außer der Aristokratie hielt sie u. a. berühmte Persönlichkeiten und gefeierte Damenschönheiten fest. Die größte Sammlung ihrer Werke befindet sich noch heute mit 73 Pastellen in der Dresdener Gemäldegalerie. Pastell/Papier. 47 x 37 cm. Rokoko-Rahmen. Kurz und tragisch war das Leben der Dargestellten (1675 - 1694). Sie wuchs im direkten Umfeld des kursächsischen Hofes auf, als Tochter des späteren Generalleutnants Rudolph von Neitschütz und der Schwester des Oberhofmarschalls Friedrich Adolph von Haugwitz. 1687 verliebte sich Kurprinz Johann Georg (IV.) in sie; als er 1691 den Thron bestieg, gelang es ihr als Mätresse, sich und ihrer Familie in kürzester Zeit erheblichen Einfluss am Hof sowie Besitzungen zu verschaffen. 1693 wurde sie auf Betreiben des Kurfürsten und mittels immenser Bestechung durch Kaiser Leopold I., zur Reichsgräfin von Rochlitz erhoben. Im Herbst 1693 traten bei ihr jedoch erste Anzeichen einer Krankheit auf, am 4. April 1694 starb sie nur 19-jährig vermutlich an den Pocken und wurde danach in der Gruft der Sophienkirche bestattet. Der Kurfürst Johann Georg IV. folgte ihr nur wenige Wochen später, vielleicht an derselben Krankheit. Sein Bruder und Nachfolger, Friedrich August I. der Starke strengte danach einen posthumen, umfangreichen Hexenprozess gegen die Familie Neitschütz und ihre Anhänger an. Magdalena Sibyllas sterbliche Überreste wurden auf Anzeichen von Hexerei untersucht, anschließend anonym beigesetzt; die Besitztümer Magdalena Sibyllas und ihrer Mutter zog man ein.
