EUGÈNE CARRIÈRE (Gournay-sur-Marne, France, 1849 – Paris, 1906) “Portrait of a Woman.” Oil on canvas mounted on panel. Provenance: collection of professor and sculptor Einar Utzon-Frank (1888–1955); subsequently, Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers, Copenhagen, Sept. No. 183, lot 51. Measurements: 21 x 17.5 cm; 27 x 24 cm (frame). This portrait belongs to the most characteristic body of work from Eugène Carrière’s mature period, when the artist transformed the human figure into a presence that seems to emerge slowly from the shadows. From the late 1880s onward, portraiture and scenes of family intimacy took center stage in his work; with paintings such as *Intimité*, presented at the 1889 Salon, he developed a visual language that critics associated with Symbolist explorations. The composition dispenses with any spatial references to focus on the model’s face and gesture, as she rests her hand under her chin in a quiet, introspective pose. Carrière works with an extraordinarily limited palette of earth tones, ochres, and browns, bringing out the forehead, nose, lips, and fingers through very restrained gradations of light. This technique is central to his painting: the Metropolitan Museum precisely describes how his figures seem to materialize from shades of shadow and a deliberately airy brushstroke. Rather than accurately reproducing physical features, Carrière seeks to convey a psychological presence. The boundaries between figure and background dissolve, and the painterly texture retains a visible quality—especially in the dark areas—so that the face takes on an almost immaterial quality. This tension between naturalistic observation and inner evocation explains the unique position the artist occupied in fin-de-siècle Paris and his affinity with Symbolist sensibilities. His friendship and aesthetic affinity with Auguste Rodin were particularly close; the two artists even went so far as to collect each other’s works. The provenance particularly enhances the piece’s appeal. It belonged to Einar Utzon-Frank, a central figure in Danish sculpture of the interwar period and the leading representative of its classicist movement, before passing through Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers in Copenhagen. The fact that it was part of the personal collection of a sculptor of this stature places the work within a context of discerning art collecting and documents its early circulation in the Scandinavian art world. Trained in Paris and active in the Salons since the 1870s, Carrière achieved international recognition for his portraits and family scenes, conceived through an unmistakable aesthetic based on chromatic reduction, diffused light, and introspection. His work is widely represented in leading institutional collections, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the latter of which holds fifteen works by the artist in its collection.

    EUGENE CARRIERE (FRENCH, 1849-1906).

    Est: $600 - $900

'L'Aurore' (Dawn). Colored lithographic poster on linen. L'Aurore was a radical newspaper founded in 1897. It is most famous for printing Emile Zola's "J'accuse" during the Dreyfus Affair in 1898. Carriere was an important painter whose innovative and individual style defies classification. Of his few lithographs and posters, L'Aurore is Carriere's most classic and best known. Oddly reminiscent of Edward Munch's "The Scream," this image depicts a working class woman trying to make her way through the mist. If she is befuddled, overwhelmed or even terrified of the landscape around her, the implication is that L'Aurore will help delineate her path. Property from an estate. Dimensions: Sight size: 54.25" h x 40.25" w. Frame: 61.75" h x 47.375" w.

Eugene Anatole Carriere (French, 1849-1906). An antique lithograph art print on paper with borders, titled "Lecture," produced circa 1896. The portrait features a figural work rendered in an ethereal style that reflects Carriere's Symbolist approach, depicting a female figure seated at a table, reading from an open book. It is signed in the plate within the work at the lower left, with the artist's pencil signature located in the border at the lower left and an atelier monogram stamp in the border's lower right. Carriere's work was said to have influenced Picasso's Blue Period. A label from the "ART CONSERVATION RESOURCE CENTER" (Boston, MA), dated June 1989, is affixed to the back, providing details about the work's framing history. The lithograph is presented under UV filtering Plexiglass with a cream mat border in a gilt wood frame. Provenance: From a private Palm Beach collection. Created with SnapGenie Work Size: 11.5 x 9.5 in. Dimensions: 21 X 18 X .5 in. Condition: Good overall condition having mild age related surface wear and paper toning.
