δ KENNETH CARTER (BRITISH, 1928-2007) Two warships of the Royal Navy cruising off Henry Winstanley's Eddystone Rock lighthouse, c.1700 δ KENNETH CARTER (BRITISH, 1928-2007) Two warships of the Royal Navy cruising off Henry Winstanley's Eddystone Rock lighthouse, c.1700 Signed in scratching out 'Kenneth Carter' (lower right) Oil on canvas 27 x 39in. (68.5 x 99cm.) The first Eddystone Lighthouse was completed in November 1698, designed and built by the ingenious Henry Winstanley (1644-1703), a polymath who had lost two of his ships to the notorious shoals nine miles south of Rame Head (near Plymouth). It comprised an elegant octagonal granite tower with ornamental ironwork and a glazed candle lamp room. Winstanley was visiting on 27th November 1703 - the night of the Great Storm - which washed both him and his lighthouse away. The short period of operation had, however, saved many lives and ships, and a larger replacement was constructed by 1709. Fine overall condition.
