Cassandre and Charles Loupot (Alliance Graphique) Vermouth Crucifix : Maquette c. 1930-34 cut paper and paint on board 15.75 h x 11.5 w in (40 x 29 cm) A rare surviving original advertising study for Vermouth Crucifix, produced within the legendary Alliance Graphique workshop of A.M. Cassandre and Charles Loupot. The composition is an expert example of Art Deco design, featuring monumental typography, a dramatic dark backdrop, and sharp geometric architecture. At its heart, a bottle and glass are framed by a striking red-and-white graphic device that beautifully evokes a stylized cross. Original Alliance Graphique label to verso with number '53'. A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron), Italia vintage poster

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron) Italia vintage poster 1936 39.25 h x 23.75 w in (100 x 60 cm) One of two posters Cassandre created in 1935 for the Italian railway company ENIT. He produced it while living in Italy for a summer with his assistant Raymond Savignac. While the mate to this image depicts the sporting joys of the country, this one focuses on its arts and culture. It is interesting to note that because he was a French artist working under Mussolini, Cassandre used a monogram of his name instead of his signature in order to protect his identity. Off. Graf. The Dubo..Dubon...Dubonnet idea was so popular and enduring, this version was executed 23 years after the design debuted in Paris, and was commissioned by the aperitif company's Danish distributor. Ironically, this two-sheet poster was never actually used in the market: it was too large to fit into the designated posting areas. A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron), Normandie vintage poster

    Est: $15,000 - $18,000

A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron) Normandie vintage poster 1935 38.875 h x 24.625 w in (99 x 63 cm) It's safe to say the name 'Normandie' is known today primarily because of this most iconic of posters, even though this ship was depicted by at least five other posterists including Paul Colin. The simple, bows-on, dead-symmetric view of a great, sleek, towering ship belongs so inalienably to Cassandre's that it has been impossible for other poster artists to imitate it except to pay it deliberate homage, as several have done. Filling most of the image, almost touching the top and sides, the ship looks enormous enough that the speck-like birds included for scale are almost, but not quite, superfluous. Launched in 1935, the Normandie was the first ship longer than 300 meters, and a symbol of French technology and luxury. Her career was ended in New York harbor 1942 by a fire started by a welder's blowtorch; overloaded with water from the fireboats, she sank. This is a rarely seen variant—and it boasts vivid colors! Normandie Poster by A.M. Cassandre Restrike by Distil 1998

    Est: $800 - $1,200

This poster was printed in the 1990's by the estate of the artist Adolphe Mouron Cassandre. It uses Cassandre's original design printed in 1935, which became one of the most well-known posters of all time. The poster promoted the Inaugural Voyage of the Normandie. The ship was the leading vessel of its time and it was completely furnished with the highest level of Art Deco design. Cassandre's dynamic image and rich colors still resonate with the viewer over 75 years after its creation. This printing is in a larger size format than the original 1930's issue so as to not confuse the two posters. Adolphe Jean Marie Mouron (1901-1968), commonly known as AM Cassandre, is one of the most influential poster artists of the mid-twentieth century. His work mixes elements of art deco, cubism and surrealism. Cassandre established his own advertising agency, Alliance Graphique. Along with his innovative art style, Cassandre also developed several typefaces for use in his advertising. In 1936, his posters were exhibited by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His images of speeding trains, ocean liners, and festive cocktails defined our vision of the period between the wars. His influence is still being felt today in current graphic designs. This is an authorized Reissue Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Colour lithogr. poster, 118x79 cm., signed on the stone in lower right corner, Paris, Alliance Graphique, 1931. - Folded once; tiny tears in left margin of lower half (not exceeding 1 cm.). Fine copy, without any restorations. = This is the large and rarest version of this poster. Mouron plate 32 (the small version) and p.84-85 on posters of this type: "(...) Remarkable for the spareness of their style, these works reflect an unflagging desire to give prominence to what characterizes the object - or feature - being advertised by choosing a significant angle and position and by modelling it to suggests its volumes. Whether it is executed in a range of greys or in the tones of an anonymous fidelity to an ideal reality, the object appears larger than it is in real life. Further emphasized by a dramatic chiaroscuro, to which a more or less finely regulated air brush brings a variety of textures rendering the material it consists of, it stands out, a fully substantial thing, against a background of sharply contrasting or - in some cases, subtly evocative - colors. Such is the case in Miniwatt (1931) (...)." This lot is subject to 4% resale royalties ('droit de suite') over the total amount of hammerprice and buyer's premium. Adolphe Mouron Cassandre, Sweepstake / Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. 1935.

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Adolphe Mouron Cassandre 1901-1968 Sweepstake / Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. 1935. Condition B: repaired tears, replaced losses, creases and overpainting in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired pin holes in corners; backed on non-archival linen. "The drama and excitement of a photo finish are stirringly depicted by the concentrated and overlapping form of two jockeys and horses crossing a finish line. By flattening and combining the two jockeys, so that their silks are joined together, that the riding boots of one jockey are placed directly behind those of the other, and that the color of one horse switches from brown to black, Cassandre evokes the feeling of blurred, blinding speed that is always associated with the neck-and-neck battle of a stretch run" (Brown & Reinhold, p. 18). "Even the gradient of the title 'Sweepstake' contributes to the idea of movement" (Weill / Cassandre p. 96). Inaugurated in 1935, the sweepstake tied to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was a lottery in which the public bought tickets and prizes were awarded based on a combination of the random draw and the race outcome (winners or placed horses boosting ticket value). It served to raise public funds to contribute to the race's prize pool, helping increase its stature and attract international competitors. It has become one of Europe's richest flat horse races. This is the middle of three formats. Rare. We could locate only 2 other copies in this size at auction in the last 25 years. Mouron pl. 54, Reinhold & Brown 50, Weill / Cassandre p. 97, Suntory 30.

Adolphe Mouron Cassandre 1901-1968 Paris. 1935. Condition A / A-: minor repaired tears at bottom edge. Framed. Although produced in the same year as his fabled Normandie poster, this image is an indication of the direction Cassandre's work would take once he moved to America in 1936. It is composed in a "charming, dreamy" symbolic style based on Surrealism, and indeed, elements of Magritte can be seen; it is a "foreglimpse of Cassandre's later stage designs" (Mouron p. 71). Adolphe Mouron Cassandre, Café Chat Noir. Window card. 1932.

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Adolphe Mouron Cassandre 1901-1968 Café Chat Noir. Window card. 1932. Condition A: slight darkening at bottom edge; punch holes at top, as issued for hanging; two Belgian ink stamps in bottom right. Henri Mouron, the artist's son, in his monograph on his father's work, includes a black and white image of this work, describing it as a "gouache maquette poster for an unpublished project." It was unknown to have ever been printed. Yet, with this rare example, we now know that it was printed in a window card format. This is the only known extant copy. One of Cassandre's graphic approaches to the art of the poster is referred to as the "Objective" mode - through which he "strove to express the object being advertised according to its 'laws of tension' in a plastic vocabulary that resembled the language of painting . . . In two [of Cassandre's] works of the objective mode, Chat Noir (1932) and Borwick's (1935), the formal poverty of the themes is offset by an artfully arranged still life" (Cassandre / Mouron p. 81-58). In fact, it is the dark evocation of an avid reader, gripping the book, engrossed in its content, which gives such an hypnotic affect to the image. Brown & Reinhold refers to it as both surreal in regards to its "nocturnal lighting effect" as well as superrealist (Brown & Reinhold p. 15). "The subtlety of brown tones, reflections on the glasses, the pressure of the readers grip on the book all evoke the extraordinary concentration of the man passionately devouring the novel and that nothing seems able to detach his attention, not even our gaze " (Weill / Cassandre p. 42). Rare. Mouron pl. 25, Cassandre / Suntory p. 49, Cassandre / Weill p. 115, Brown & Reinhold 22, Metiers No. 18-21, 1930 IX, Affiche Art Deco p. 136, Encyclopedie de l'Affiche p. 338.

PACIFIC CIGARETTES | ORIGINAL POSTER BY A.M. CASSANDRE (1901-1968)

    Est: €5,000 - €6,000

Poster, lithographed, mounted on linen, CH/USA 1935, 88 x 126 cm, print: Lith. Sauberlin & Pfeiffer S.A. Vevey, signed: A.M. Cassandre (1901-1968). Cassandre, born Adolphe Mouron in Ukraine, is considered one of the leading representatives of French graphic design in the 1920s and 1930s and the most impressive poster designer in France. From a distance, the poster looks as if it has just been printed, but there are tiny imperfections in the white border that have been repaired during linen-backing. The black area and the motif are completely untouched. A rare highlight in the classic Cassandre style, in which the hand and the package seem to reach out to the viewer. | *linen dimensions: 90 x 128 cm

A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron) Etoile du Nord vintage poster 1927 41.375 h x 29.375 w in (105 x 75 cm) The North Star was the name of a Paris-to-Amsterdam express; Cassandre gave it glamour by catching the purely sensual enjoyment of rail travel: the rhythm of the wheels, the fascination of the endless perspectives of converging tracks, and the North Star itself. In their book on the artist, Brown and Reinhold claimed that this poster "May be his most audacious... Cassandre solves the problem of having to advertise a daytime service that uses a nocturnal image as its name. He achieves his solution by using the somewhat surreal device of turning a night sky into the ground of the poster and having the star hover above it. In what could have been a static arrangement, the rails are laid out so that they imply forward movement... Even though such an arrangement is mechanically false... it is precisely because of it that the poster attains a dynamic realism more compelling than 'reality itself,' which is why Etoile du Nord is one of Cassandre's best images" (p. 13). Hillier declares this work "his masterpiece," and we couldn't agree more: it's a truly mesmerizing achievement, and arguably one of the best posters ever created. Adolphe Mouron Cassandre 1901-1968 Venezia. 1951. Condition B+: minor repaired tears, replaced losses and restoration in margins; minor creases in image and lower right; small pin holes in corners; lifting slightly from linen at bottom right corner. In a style consistent with the stage designs from later in his career, Cassandre depicts a tranquil vista on a Venetian canal. Considered to be "his best tourist poster . . . the profile of the gondolier whose image is reflected in the water is harmoniously poetic. The image is vertically separated in two - on the right, a palace in the shade, and on the left, a luminous twilight. It is exquisite" (Cassandre / Weill p. 220). In 1954, this image was reissued with additional text at the bottom to promote a Graphic Industries conference in Venice. Adolphe Mouron Cassandre 1901-1968 Normandie. 1935. Condition B- / C: entirely-replaced and overpainted margins, including printer's text; extensive repaired tears, replaced losses, creases and overpainting in image and along vertical and horizontal folds. A pillar in the pantheon of modern poster design, Cassandre's unforgettable image has entered the mainstream of the graphic vernacular. Attention is often drawn to the "lofty symmetry and steep upward angle" (Mouron p. 67) of the composition and to the small flock of gulls which help to convey the size of this floating palace. Yet, seen head-on, this liner displays a grace and smoothness of curves that belie its massive size; even the small amount of water being churned up by its mighty keel seems to suggest that the boat is literally gliding through the ocean. Several other variations of this poster exist, all boasting the same monumental image, but differing in their text; one announces the ship's maiden voyage, and another announces "service régulier." A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron), Perrier vintage poster

    Est: $12,000 - $15,000

A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron) Perrier vintage poster 1948 91.625 h x 62.25 w in (233 x 158 cm) This is one of only three known copies. On first glance, this two-sheet poster appears to be anything but the work of Cassandre. The reason is two-fold. First, style: this is not the Cassandre familiar to us from posters but the Cassandre of the French theater, for which he was at the time designing sets and costumes. The style here is very much that of his theatrical drawings. Second is the poster's rarity. When the artist's son, Henri Mouron was writing his definitive 1985 work on Cassandre's graphic opus, he sought a photo of this poster from every possible museum and collection in the world; no one had even a photo, let alone a copy of the poster. But Mouron remembered the poster well, recalling that it was printed in a very small quantity and mounted three in a row on billboards. Knowing this was to be its use, Cassandre left wide borders for maximum effect. Mouron also recalls that the poster was badly received by critics who did not like this "new" Cassandre, and that it was assumed at the time that the figure was a self-portrait. It is, in any event, a wonderful image: a waiter serves Perrier, "the champagne of table waters"-so bubbly that a glass of it floats in mid-air. Cassandre has kept the design light too, and made it more eye-catching as well, by letting the "P" and the waiter fall outside the main image. Literature: Cassandre/Suntory, p. 182; PAI-XXIV, 223 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.
