        Gerald Ira Diamond Cassidy (1869 - 1934) "The Chief" Watercolor & Gouache on Paper. Hand signed on lower left, also includes original artist tag from Chicago Galleries Association. Gerald Cassidy is known for his subjects of the Southwest including Indian portraits and landscapes. He moved to New Mexico at the age of 20. He first earned his living by painting portraits of Indians and scenes of the Southwest that were intended to be reproduced on postcards. In 1912, he married the sculptor and writer Ina Sizer Davis, who became a noted author of numerous articles on New Mexico art colonies. Gerald Cassidy was one of the founders in 1912 of the Santa Fe Art Colony. The couple settled in Santa Fe where Cassidy began a project to document the culture of Pueblo Indians. During this time, he changed his signature from Gerald Ira Diamond Cassidy to Gerald Cassidy, placing the Tewa Indian sun symbol (symbol of circle with four lines) between his first and last name. In 1915 he was awarded the Grand Prize and Gold Medal for his murals in the Indian Arts Building, at the Panama-California International Exposition, San Diego, California. His work is represented in national and international museums including the Freer Collection, Washington, D. Close inspection with both the unaided eye and under UV light reveals nothing of issue. The canvas is the original, it has not been lined. The piece might benefit from a light cleaning and fresh varnish. The work is framed in a somewhat ornate antique gold compo frame which is quite possibly the original frame for this artwork. The frame is in good condition with normal wear for its age including a few chips and dings and some corner separation. Verso: label: Jackson Hole Art Auction.

        This well-executed oil on canvas is attributed to Gerald Ira Diamond Cassidy, an American artist known for Native American portraits. He was born in Kentucky, grew up in Ohio, and moved to New Mexico for health reasons. His first paintings of Native Americans and Southwest landscapes were intended to be reproduced on postcards. The overall size is 44 x 29 3/4 in. wide and the sight size is 33 3/4 x 25 1/2 in. wide.

        Gerald Ira Diamond Cassidy (American, 1879-1934) "Southwest landscape horses and figure," signed lower right: "Gerald Cassidy." 30" H x 40" W; frame: 33.5" H x 43.5" W x 1.5" D. Overall cracquelure, stretcher impressions and minor paint loss. Gerald Cassidy was a Kentucky-born artist who studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, National Academy of Design and the Art Students League before relocating to New Mexico. One of the founding artists of the Santa Fe Art Colony, Cassidy would make the documentation of Native American life and culture his primary artistic mission. His work can be found in many national and international museums and galleries including the Freer Collection in Washington D.C., the San Diego Museum, and the City Art Museum in Berlin, Germany.
