      Apr. 04, 2019

      Signed Alfredo Castaneda Lithograph - "Toma…" - 1985

      Est: $600 - $900

Alfredo Castaneda (Mexican, 1938-2010), "Toma de Conciencia", lithograph in colors, ed 23/30. 1985. A limited edition original lithograph in colors. Created in his entrancing Surrealistic style, Castaneda's composition features the visages of two individuals positioned head to head in an oval, egg-like arrangement - with an intentional 'crack' at the midline. Occupying the upper half is a beardless gentleman wearing a shirt and tie positioned upside-down, and in the lower half of the image is an elderly, bearded man dressed in black and positioned right-side up. The piece presents dualities of young vs. old, light vs. dark, corporeal vs. spiritual. Characteristic of Castaneda's depictions, the mature visages connote experience, reflection, consternation, introversion, and melancholy. Casteneda was an avid reader of mystical texts that fueled his imagination and provided inspiration for his art. Size: 25" L x 18.75" W (63.5 cm x 47.6 cm); 29.25" L x 23.125" W (74.3 cm x 58.7 cm) including frame Born in Mexico City, Alfredo Castaneda received his degree in architecture from the University of Mexico in 1964 and had his first solo exhibition at the Galeria de Arte Mexicano in 1969. His surrealist works are in elite museum collections in Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Japan. A retrospective of Castaneda's art was held at the Monterrey (Mexico) Museum in 1990, and a monograph about his oeuvre was published that year as well. Apr. 04, 2019

Signed Castaneda Lithograph "Jugar a la Vida" 1990

      Est: $500 - $800

Alfredo Castaneda (Mexican, 1938-2011), "Jugar a la Vida" 1990. Signed, dated, titled, and numbered (44/50) in pencil below the image. A limited edition original lithograph in colors. Created in his entrancing Surrealistic style, Castaneda's composition features the head of a bearded, wiry haired man - the subject of several of his works - lying upon what appears to be a bed with white sheets below his visage. Where his body should be, the covers turn dark, and there is an 'opening' through which one sees the crimson red color of blood with a long ladder extending upward from it and a sinuous green snake slithering downward. The man's mature visage is one of experience, reflection, consternation, introversion, and melancholy. All is set against a green ground adorned by a cloverleaf pattern, and the lithograph floats upon a red backing that complements the red opening in the image. Casteneda was an avid reader of mystical texts that fueled his imagination and provided inspiration for his art which continues a longstanding Mexican engagement with Surrealism. Size: 22.25" L x 15.125" W (56.5 cm x 38.4 cm); 25.75" L x 18.375" W (65.4 cm x 46.7 cm) framed Born in Mexico City, Alfredo Castaneda received his degree in architecture from the University of Mexico in 1964 and had his first solo exhibition at the Galeria de Arte Mexicano in 1969. Alfredo Castaneda (Mexican, 1938-2010) "A flor de piel" 1990. Signed, numbered (44/50), titled, and dated below the image. A limited edition lithograph in colors. Created in his entrancing Surrealistic style, Castaneda's composition features a depiction of a nude male positioned at the lower end of a sage green arched space - with an intentional peeled back circle above that reveals a red orb radiating from a lower layer. The man is nude with a seemingly flayed body. We see his arms held behind his back - hand in hand - just above his buttocks. A red ribbon is attached to the elbow of his right arm. His head is bent backward by 180 degrees, presenting an upside down bearded visage. Characteristic of Castaneda's depictions, the mature visage connotes experience, reflection, consternation, introversion, and melancholy. His pose and physical state suggests a tortured soul. Casteneda was an avid reader of mystical texts that fueled his imagination and provided inspiration for his art. Size: 29.5" L x 22" W (74.9 cm x 55.9 cm); 33" L x 25.25" W (83.8 cm x 64.1 cm) framed Born in Mexico City, Alfredo Castaneda received his degree in architecture from the University of Mexico in 1964 and had his first solo exhibition at the Galeria de Arte Mexicano in 1969. ALFREDO CASTAÑEDA, A+B a partir del ojo derecho, Signed and dated 73, Oil on digital print on paper on masonite, 85 x 64.8 cm / 33.4 x 25.5 inches.
