This work constitutes a magnificent example of the virtuosity of Pieter Casteels III, Flemish painter specialized in still lifes of flowers, fruits and exotic birds, whose production is located between the baroque tradition of Antwerp and the decorative refinement that he developed later in England. The composition presents a vase overflowing with flowers arranged with theatrical dynamism. Around it, ripe and open fruits display a tactile sensuality characteristic of late Flemish Baroque. The parrot, of intense presence, acts as a visual axis and provides an exoticism that connects with the European taste for species brought from overseas. The light treatment, with an open landscape in the background, creates atmospheric depth and highlights the vibrant colors of the whole. The meticulousness in the depiction of petals, feathers and fruit skins reveals the artist's Flemish training and his affinity with the tradition of Jan van Huysum. Trained in Antwerp with his father, Pieter Casteels III moved to England in 1708 and spent most of his career there, becoming a leading figure in the decorative genre in 18th century London. He settled permanently in England around 1717, where he worked for an aristocratic clientele -among them James Stanley, 10th Earl of Derby- and combined painting with the activity of art dealer and importer of European works. In 1726 he began a successful series of engravings of birds, followed by the famous publications The Twelve Months of Flowers (1730) and The Twelve Months of Fruit (1732), considered early milestones in botanical illustration and in the history of the horticultural catalog in England. Among the institutions that house his works are the British Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge).

(1684 Antwerpen - 1749 Richmond) Umkreis Blumenstillleben mit King Charles Spaniel In einem golden glänzenden Gefäß arrangierter, opulenter Strauß unterschiedlicher Frühlings- und Sommerblumen, neben dem auf einem Kissen der kleine Hund sitzt. Motiv und Stil des Gemäldes zeigen evidente Bezüge zu bekannten Werken des bedeutenden flämischen Malers, der 1708-1712 erstmals in England lebte und arbeitete, seit 1717 dauerhaft. Dort wurde er zu einem gefragten Maler der Aristokratie, die ihn auch mit zahlreichen Aufträgen bedachte. Peter Casteels III was the son of Peter Casteels II and Isabella Bosschaert and a student of Jan Batist Bosschaert, who may have been his uncle. From 1717 he worked in England in Richmond, near London. The bouquet is arranged in a decorated vase, the base of which is made up of putti, or erotes, that appear to be carrying the vase. They are standing over a lying lion. The flowers and blossoms are asymmetrical and randomly distributed. The dominant flower colors are red, white, blue and a pale purple. The white and light rose flowers form a diagonal, surrounded by individual red opium poppies. Two blue larkspurs (delphinium) on the left form a color accent that becomes darker towards the outside, towards the edge of the picture. At the bottom left are two rose petals on the stone plinth. Blue flowers of the auricula (Primula auricula) fall around them, as if the putti had shaken the vase too hard.

In der Vase das vielblumige Gebinde, bestehend u.a. aus rot leuchtenden Nelken, rosafarbenen Rosen, Chrysanthemen, Tulpen und diversen Kleinblütlern. Qualitätvolle Malerei, dabei überwiegend rote und weiße Blüten, aufgelockert durch einige blaue Kleinblütler, die teils bis zur Platte herabreichen, auf der auch zwei Rosenblüten liegen. Malerei in der typischen Manier des Künstlers. Der in Antwerpen geborene Maler und Kupferstecher war vor allem für seine Blumen-, Wild- und Vogelszenen bekannt. In Prunkrahmen.Auf einer großen steinernen Tischplatte stehend ein breiter, durchbrochen geflochtener Korb, darin locker arrangierte Blüten und Blumenzweige, zu diesen gehören: Tulpen, Rosen, Hyazinthen, Chrysanthemen, Anemonen, gelbe Trollblumen und eine über den Korbrand bis über die Tischplatte herabhängende blau-weiße Trichterwinde. Am linken Bildrand liegen zudem zwei samtig gelb-gold glänzende Pfirsiche. Im Hintergrund erkennt man im linken Drittel eine dunkle Wand, während nach rechts der Blick auf eine weite bergige Landschaft im Licht der gerade untergegangenen Sonne reicht. Manner of Pieter Casteels III (Flemish, 1684-1749). Still life - oil on canvas, 18th c. An impressively large 18th century still life in the manner of Pieter Casteels III, with a brass plate engraved "Peter Casteels 1684-1749" further embellishing the opulent frame. The composition includes an elaborate floral arrangement with tulips, roses, peonies, hyacinth, and lilies of brilliant hues arranged in an elegant Rococo period vase that is lavishly adorned with flourishes on a console table. Perched before the floral arrangement is an exotic bird, and joining the avian is a document that cascades over the table's edge to amplify the trompe l'oeil effect, as well as additional floral blossoms with a pair of butterflies fluttering to either side. Size of painting: 39" L x 31.5" W (99.1 cm x 80 cm) Size of frame: 46.875" L x 39.75" W (119.1 cm x 101 cm) Complementing this marvelous theme is a stunning color palette - scarlet red, cornflower blue, buttercup yellow, violet, fuchsia, pink, vermilion all against a cool teal ground. Finally, silhouettes of foliage contribute a touch of mystery to the painting. Pieter Casteels III was born in Antwerp on October 3, 1684. After training with his father, he traveled to London in 1708 with his brother-in-law Peter Tillemans to work for a picture dealer. Casteels engaged with the London artistic community, subscribing to Kneller's Great Queen Street Academy in London in 1711 and also becoming a member of the Rose and Crown Club. With the exception of a brief return to Antwerp in 1716, Casteels set down roots in England where he would become a prominent painter of flowers and exotic birds, primarily for chimney pieces and overdoors, in addition to creating relatively small history paintings for architectural settings.
