        • Enrique Castro-Cid HC Litho - Nudes & Parrot (1969)
          Mar. 19, 2023

          Enrique Castro-Cid HC Litho - Nudes & Parrot (1969)

          Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Enrique Castro-Cid (Chilean, 1937-1992). Lithograph in colors, 1969. H.C. #VII/X. Signed, numbered, and dated in pencil by the artist on the lower right. A fascinating and very rare HC (Hors Commerce) lithograph in colors by Chilean artist Enrique Castro-Cid. This composition features a male and female nude (perhaps intended to represent Adam and Eve) with a colorful, oversized tropical bird to the left of the man. A fascinating work that demonstrates how Castro-Cid explored and questioned traditional themes such as the male and female nude. Notice the exaggerated poses and unusual proportions of the figures. According to ArtFix Daily, " He would draw the human nude form and the outline of that form would be plotted carefully on a graph. As he changed the formula and the equations, the outline of the form would seem to distort. The equations were then changed to such a degree that the form, once known to us, now seemed almost unrecognizable. Or, were we looking at the process backwards? Were we looking into other dimensions?" Size: 20.5" L x 26.25" W (52.1 cm x 66.7 cm) About the artist: Enrique Castro-Cid studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes at the Universidad de Chile. Once his studies were complete, he relocated to New York City where he quickly became a larger than life figure in the art world. He was among the pioneers to explore relationships between art, geometry, and computers. According to ArtFix Daily, "His vision was one of space-time. His limitless imagination and command of the computer in the 1960's and 1970's allowed him to create art that would be conceivable in the computer, but difficult to represent - five dimensional space being one of those ideas. He would come to be considered an avant-garde psychologist of perception. He experimented with pictorial space and with geometric transformations. He took his art and way of understanding to another level. Or two…" Following his years in New York City, Castro-Cid moved to Miami and became a favorite in the Miami art scene as well. Today he is regarded as a pioneer, one of the first to marry art and technology. Please note: Although HCs (Hors Commerce) and Aps (Artist's Proofs) are both special, an HC is rarer because it is only available directly from the artist. An HC is a gift to the artist for permitting the publisher to print the artist's images. HCs are the most valuable prints due to their rarity.
