  • Scribner's Christmas Number. 1903.

    Scribner's Christmas Number. 1903.

    Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: BLENDON REED CAMPBELL (1872-1969) SIZE: 14 5/8 x 22 1/2 in./37 x 57 cm PRINTER: American Lithographic Co., New York DESCRIPTION: Campbell gives us a crisp wintry scene for the Christmas Number of Scribner's; our cool and collected lady is suited to brave the chill with a fur muff, stole, and hat, accentuated by a red cape and leather gloves. The publication advertised this issue as such: "The Christmas Number will be the most beautiful and sumptuous magazine of the holidays. Unrivaled in the variety and interest of its literary contributions, and gay and bright in colored illustrations, it will be a fitting issue with which to close Scribner's most successful year." Nov. 15, 2020

    Scribner’s for November. 1903.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: BLENDON REED CAMPBELL (1872-1969) SIZE: 14 1/2 x 22 1/2 in./37 x 57.2 cm PRINTER: The Grignard Litho. Co., New York DESCRIPTION: There’s something somber—almost funereal—about this Campbell design for the November 1903 issue of Scribner’s. But without further details it’s difficult to say precisely what these two might be mourning. Perhaps it’s nothing more than the onset of winter making them less than peppy. But ennui becomes them, and no doubt once they begin to flip through the pages of their at-hand Scribner’s, their outlook will brighten considerably. (Art Nouveau; Literary; American)

BLENDON REED CAMPBELL (1872-?)Scribner's for July.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,500

BLENDON REED CAMPBELL (1872-?) Scribner's for July. All three of the selections singled-out for prominence from this July issue of Scribner's would have made for enticing promotional artwork. However, the powers that be decided upon 'The Captains,' and thus an uncredited artist in all likelihood Campbell delivered this vision of an intent sculler for whom nothing exists beyond the act of rowing in order to bring readers to the magazine. Born in St. Louis, Campbell studied in Paris under Whistler, Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He was a member of the American Art Association in Paris and the Society of Illustrators in New York.
