George Campbell RHA (1919-1979) Memory of Cantaleria, Tenerife Oil on board, 50 x 60cm (19½ x 23½'') Signed; inscribed verso Likely dating to the 1960s, Memory of Cantaleria, Tenerife is a richly layered evocation of place by George Campbell, whose deep affinity with Spain and its islands shaped some of the most distinctive works of his career. Though Irish by birth, Campbell’s imagination was profoundly Mediterranean; Tenerife, with its volcanic topography and brilliant Atlantic light, provided fertile ground for his expressive, semi-abstract language. The composition unfolds as a palimpsest of recollection rather than a literal topography. A sweeping shoreline and luminous sea are set against the commanding presence of Mount Teide rising in cool blues in the distance. In the foreground, architectural fragments, village forms and still-life motifs interlock in flattened planes of colour—earth reds, chalk whites, marine blues and olive greens—suggesting both interior and exterior space. Campbell’s characteristic handling is evident in the confident structuring of the picture surface: passages of translucent wash are set against denser, textured applications of paint, creating a dynamic tension between memory and immediacy. The title itself signals the artist’s intention. This is not reportage but recollection—an atmosphere distilled. The geometry of battlement-like forms and whitewashed houses nods to the vernacular architecture of the Canary Islands, while the fractured composition reveals Campbell’s engagement with European modernism, filtered through his own lyrical sensibility. Born in Arklow, Co. Wicklow, Campbell was largely self-taught, initially pursuing music before turning fully to painting. His first one-man exhibition was held in Dublin in 1945, and he subsequently exhibited regularly with the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. From the 1950s onward he spent extended periods in Spain, forging close connections with Spanish artists and intellectuals; in 1966 he was awarded the Silver Medal at the International Art Exhibition in Ibiza. His work is represented in major public collections including the National Gallery of Ireland and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Memory of Cantaleria, Tenerife belongs to a mature phase in Campbell’s oeuvre, when landscape, memory and abstraction coalesced into a highly personal visual language. At once structural and atmospheric, it stands as a compelling testament to the artist’s enduring dialogue between Ireland and the sunlit landscapes of the Atlantic fringe.

Provenance: Adam's & Bonhams, 8 December 2004, lot 93; Private collection Located 42 miles from Madrid, Toledo was once the Spanish capital and is known as 'The City of Three Cultures' owing to the influence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish culture imprinted on it. Domenikos Theotokópoulos (1541-1614), better known as El Greco, lived and worked in this melting pot for most of his life and many of his most important works - considered a precursor to Expressionism - can be found in the city. In light of the cultural importance of Toledo and its breadth of history and art it is unsurprising that an Irish artist, who made Spain his second home, would have visited the city and found inspiration there. In fact, Campbell painted the city numerous times with at least 8 views having appeared at auction in the last 20 years. Landscape paintings however were rare in the Spanish Renaissance and Baroque period and one of El Greco's works, View of Toledo, ca. 1599-1600 (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York ) is considered the first Spanish landscape painting of its time. Like El Greco's oil, Campbell's painting is also a landscape portrait which introduces its subject in the foreground with a wide view of the River Tagus which surrounds the city on three sides. Campbell's version is a more faithful documentary description of the landscape. The energy of the sky and the river create movement in the composition, and colour, although restrained, is used to dramatic effect with particular accents of blue and green paying homage perhaps to the Greek master. George Campbell in the company of his wife Madge and fellow artist Gerard Dillon first visited Spain towards the end of 1951. Following this initial trip he and Madge travelled annually to Andalucía, for the winter months particularly, and his first solo exhibition was held in Torremolinos in the mid 1950s. Campbell's interest in Spain extended beyond art to Spanish culture generally; the towns and cities and their characters, bullfights, religious processions, gypsies and Flamenco are among the many aspects of Iberian culture he embraced both in life and in paint. In 1978 his relationship with the country was formally acknowledged by the Spanish Government with the award of Commander with the Insignia and Privileges of the Order of the Merito Civile. 28 years later, in 2006, Malaga City Council celebrated his life and work by naming a roundabout after him, Glorieta Jorge Campbell. Provenance: Taylor deVeres Art Auctions, Dublin, May 1992 lot 28 (receipt attached); Private Collection Many of George Campbell's finest paintings date from the 1960s, when he lived and worked during the winter months in the fishing village of El Pedregalejo, near Málaga. In Spanish Fishing Village, the figures of men and women can be discerned, as can the forms of whitewashed houses behind them, but overall the painting is characterised by rapid, confident brushwork, and a sense of energy and animation in the application of paint. The curved lines of fishing boats contrast with the white cubes of houses, while in the background can be seen the undulating outline of hills. His paintings are invested with an appreciation of the cultures of both countries, and combine a strong Cubist sensibility with confident use of paint. The effect in Spanish Fishing Village is rich, dark and vigorous, a celebration of age-old traditional Mediterranean culture, infused, as is often the case with Campbell, with those darker tones that often characterise Spanish art from the Renaissance period onwards. Together with her sister Eva, Letitia Marion Hamilton spent her life painting, traveling and exhibiting. The two sisters did not marry and, with their dedication to art, went on to become known as 'The Hamwood Ladies'. After attending Alexandra College, in 1907 Hamilton enrolled at the Metropolitan School of Art, where she studied under William Orpen. She and her sister then moved to London, where Hamilton attended Chelsea Polytechnic, and also studied under Frank Brangwyn. She first exhibited at the RHA in 1909 and thereafter showed regularly at the Academy, being elected a member in 1943. In 1920, while living at Palmerstown, she was a founding member of the Society of Dublin Painters. Five years later, she exhibited at the Paris Salon. She also showed work in London; at the Goupil Gallery, the RA and the Fine Art Society. In the far distance, the silvery light of sunshine beaming through gaps in the clouds illuminates the sea. Patches of sunlight also add a dash of colour to the still waters of a salt marsh in the foreground, surrounded by reeds. The paintwork is expressionist, characterized by swift marks made with the handle of a paintbrush, or edge of a palette knife, that invest the foreground of the painting with energy and tension, in contrast to the somber, still colours of the middle and far distance. Born in Arklow in 1917, George Campbell was raised in Belfast by his widowed mother, Gretta Bowen, (who herself would later became a well-known painter). During World War II, after witnessing the destruction of a section of the city by aerial bombardment, Campbell felt compelled to take up painting, and recorded his visual impressions of the ruined buildings. He became friendly with fellow-artist Gerard Dillon, from the Falls Road, with whom he visited Connemara. Campbell's first exhibition was held in March 1944 at the Mol Gallery in Belfast, and together with his brother Arthur, he produced a book, Ulster in Black and White (1943). Evolving a style that was influenced by the School of Paris, he based his compositions on landscapes and still lifes, but employed an expressionist painterly technique. Campbell then spent several months in London, before having his first solo show, in 1946, at the Victor Waddington Gallery in Dublin. Two years later, he exhibited in London, along with Daniel O'Neill, Gerard Dillon and Nevill Johnson. In 1948, he was in Paris, where he got to know the Russian Modernist sculptor Ossip Zadine. Returning to Ireland, Campbell spent some time living in Connemara, in Gerard Dillon's cottage on Inishlackan Island, near Roundstone. George Campbell began his life in County Wicklow before moving to Northern Ireland with his family. In his mid-twenties, having fully committed to life as an artist, Campbell returned South and established himself near Dublin port. Here, Campbell came into contact with the Spanish sailors as they moved in and out of the city. From these encounters, Campbells fascination with Spain took root and it was only a matter of time before he ventured over. In 1951, accompanied by his wife and artist Gerard Dillon, Campbell worked his way down through Spain. Reaching the Spanish coast in the south, Campbell fell in love with Málaga and became incorporated into the lifestyle and culture of the town. Over the next twenty years, Campbell spent his winters in Spain, escaping the less favourable Irish climate. He fell in love with the colours, the music and the characters, filling his sketchbooks with the vibrancy of Spanish life. On returning to Ireland each spring, Campbell would turn these sketches into fully matured oil paintings, selling them through galleries in Dublin and London. Moving away from the coast, Campbell made several paintings of Toledo. Located in central Spain, just south of Madrid, Toledo is imbued with history and cultural significance. For an artist who was drawn to the historical and ancient sites of Ireland, Toledo represented a Spanish equivalent. Surrounded on three sides by a river, the city dates back to Roman rule and was once the capital of the Spanish Empire. In the 16th century, Toledo was home to El Greco, an artist whose work was much admired by Campbell and this must have resonated with him as he painted his cityscapes. Gazing onto the city from the far side of the river, Campbell provides us with an extensive view of Toldeo. The cream-white walls belie the scorching effect of the sun, all colour having been leached over time. The blurred edges of the citys boundaries bring a mystic affect to the scene, giving the sense that, to Campbell, Toledo bore an otherworldly quality, a life vastly different to that on offer in Ireland. In 1978, Campbells contribution to Spain was officially recognised when he was made a Commander of the Order of Merito Civile. Dying the following year, Campbells life, split across Ireland and Spain, is remembered in the works that he created. This captivating scene of Toledo is a magnificent example of the love that he held for his second country.
