John Campbell 1855-1924 “South Perth from Kings Park C.1904” Watercolour, pencil and bodycolour, 39 x 69 cm. Exhibited: “Pictorial Magic, Boats on the Swan River” A City of South Perth Fiesta Exhibition 2003. Illustrated: Exhibition catalogue cover (detail). The above exhibition exhibited professional standard artists, circa 1900. Campbell was different, he depicted the urban environment. His work exudes a charm and naivety which lifts it above mere architectural or topographical rendition. He includes people, cars, boats, signage etc. In short, he gives the urban environment life and vibrancy. In this view of Kings Park and South Perth, he depicts the Old Mill, Millers Pool, the Windsor Hotel, Mends Street Jetty, the barge landing on the tip of the South Perth Peninsula as well as sailing boats, a ferry etc. He has also taken great care to accurately depict the roads and buildings of South Perth. The picture is busy with multiple vignettes, or pictures within the main picture. There are two groups of people in the mid ground. The steam paddle ferry glides past and a group of three swans paddle at the shore’s edge. Unusually for Campbell, he depicts some landscape showing a sun dappled path winding through the foliage and limestone outcrops and even depicts a small natural spring in the lower right hand corner. Illustrated; front cover, 'Pictorial Magic: Boats on the Swan River', by, Christine Sharkey. A City of South Perth 'Fiesta', Exhibition, 2003. Retrospective Exhibition, John Campbell, 2003 Provenance: Private collection, Perth Illustrated: 'The People of Perth' by; C.T Stannage. Pub; P.C.C. 1979. Illustr. P.227 The book describes the pub as being bought by Timothy Quinlan who went on to have a successful political & business career. Janice Baker (Assistant Art curator AGWA, at the time of the above exhibition), notes the following in her published essay for the exhibition. 'Western Australia has a history of 'boom and bust' economic cycles related to the fluctuations of Industrial and resource-development activity. During boom periods life was heady, and the Shamrock Hotel in Perth, immortalised in Campbell's oil painting Shamrock Hotel in central Hay Street, 1919 was a symbol of such times. The pub was recalled as a perfect stock exchange, with shares bought and sold, land dealing completed, syndicates formed. Who could possibly describe the scenes viewed from The Shamrock balcony of an evening . the wild and Incredible influx of population people pouring into the state in thousands. No rooms; care to sleep on the billiard table or under the table, or on the balcony if you have a swag. Campbell captures the charm and character of the Shamrock Hotel, carefully observing its architectural features including spindly support pillars, balcony, titled and arched frontage, and elaborate lace fretwork. The detail extends inside the building, with a view down the central corridor into the interior. There is a large sign across the entire frontage of the pub announcing its name and that of its proprietor. There are no people, (Note: A portrait of a man,

John Campbell 1855 - 1924 The subject artwork by Campbell was very possibly a commission by the house owner of the grand residence depicted on the right edge of the picture. However, the work is much more than an architectural rendition. There is the horse and sulky heading down to the river, the 'Peet & Co' real estate sign and of course, the artists forte, the grand topographical view of Perth, the Swan River and the peaceful turn of the century almost rural looking East end of South Perth. The Peet & Co sign is interesting, as there is evidence that Campbell also worked as a sign writer. He may have been giving a mention to one of his sign writing customers with its inclusion. We also know he was commissioned to paint many fine houses. In one of his works, "Perth Railway Station", 1903, an advertising sign depicted states; "For pictures of residences commission Mr. J. Campbell, Scenic Artist, Perth." His works always exude a sense of charm. They depict life and accurately reflect the optimism of the time. This work, dated 1909 was a time of rapid growth for Perth. From 1901 - 1911, Perth's population almost doubled from 44,000 to 87,000. gold mining and pastoral wealth was rapidly changing Perth from a sleepy colonial outpost to a bustling yet isolated city on the edge of the Indian Ocean Perth 1909 Watercolour Signed, titled and dated 1909 lower right 40 x 72 cm

JOHN CAMPBELL, (1855 - 1924, Scottish/Australian), SWAN BREWERY, 1903, watercolour on paper SIGNED: signed and dated lower right: J. CAMPBELL PERTH. 1903 DIMENSIONS: 41.0 x 70.0 cm PROVENANCE: John Roberts collection, Perth Corporate Collection, Perth ESSAY: Regarded as one of Western Australia's most important turn of the century artists, John Campbell recorded in detail, city buildings, breweries, churches and residential properties from around 1903. Detailed images depicting the development of Perth buildings and infrastructure included A view of Perth Railway Station, 1903. This choice of an inner city architectural subject was in sharp contrast to the popular landscape and bush subjects celebrating national identity. As an artist who was never recorded as exhibiting or being involved with art societies, John Campbell sought commissions beyond his occupation as sign-writer and decorator. Favourite subjects for Campbell were Perth's two main breweries - the Stanley Brewery and the Swan Brewery. 'The Swan Brewery began business in 1857 on river frontage in St George's Terrace before moving in 1897 to the base of Mt. Eliza [Mounts Bay Road].The new building was designed by architect Joseph Talbott Hobbs to look like an English castle'.1 Compared with another 1904 version of Swan Brewery by Campbell, which includes both a horse drawn and a new steam driven dray, this earlier 1903 work features only the horse drawn dray. 'Clydesdales were a daily sight, with both drivers and horses wearing hats in summer...Swan's stable of twenty-four Clydesdale horses, and the stable hands who lived at the brewery, were gradually replaced by steam engines.'2 1. W. Cordell, Launceston Thence by descent Private collection, Launceston Private collection, Adelaide ESSAY: The recent discovery of this rare and important panoramic View of Launceston, 1881, sheds new light on John Campbell's first years in Australia as well as adding an iconic painting to late colonial Australian art history. Born in Scotland in 1855, there has been uncertainty as to when the artist arrived in Australia and where he spent his first years before eventually settling in Perth at the turn of the century. Until now the earliest known works by Campbell were painted in Brisbane between 1887 and 1889; a view of the Brisbane River from North of Victoria (Bridge), 1887 and Railway Hotel, Brisbane, 1889. It is known that Campbell married Lucy Evans in Tasmania in 1883 and raised a family with some hardship. With the discovery of this early painting we can now assume that Campbell spent at least several years in the early 1880s residing in Tasmania, most likely in Launceston, before travelling to Brisbane by 1887. He is recorded as working in New South Wales and Sydney in 1895 and by the early 1900s had settled in Perth. Painted in 1881, the decade of the Centenary, Campbell's View of Launceston observes the ending of the Colonial era - the rugged rocky landscape and dilapidated wooden fence in the foreground, giving way to a fast growing and vibrant city with open pastures beyond. Soon after painting this work, Campbell raffled the painting in Launceston to raise funds for future endeavours. The artist had given a raffle ticket to Mrs Herring, owner of the hotel at Ringarooma in appreciation of 'kindness he never forgot'. ' It won her the View of Launceston, a prize she treasured for life' 1., which remained in the possession of the family for the next 100 years. A retrospective exhibition of John Campbell (1855-1924) was held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 2003. Dr. Eric Ratcliff, Architectural Historian, Launceston, has kindly provided the following information regarding the subject: Launceston was founded in 1806 at the head of the estuary of the River Tamar, 65 kilometres from the sea, where the North and South Esk Rivers enter the tidewater. It is the third oldest established city in Australia, and by 1881, it was in size and importance the eighth city in the Australian Colonies, the entrepot and commercial centre of Northern Tasmania, with a rich agricultural and pastoral hinterland, exporting timber and servicing mines in the region. The image is topographically accurate, but with some ar tistic condensation of the foreground and adjustment of the skyline. The viewpoint, looking north-east, is near the foot of what is now the Zig- Zag Reserve, named for the scenic path that climbs through the dolerite crags of the Cataract Gorge that appear in the foreground. The iron bridge, designed by the Irish railway engineer W. T. Doyne, prefabricated in Manchester and erected in 1862, spans the mouth of the Gorge of the South Esk, and shipping is shown in the old seaport in the mouth of the North Esk. The steamships with black and white funnels belonged to the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company, plying between Melbourne and Launceston; the largest, off Town Point, is recognisable as the SS Flinders. Beyond the bridge appears the Tamar Rowing Club boatshed of 1877. On the right, the gabled toll-keeper's cottage appears above the slope, and below it can be seen the keeper's shelter be

        Est: $26,000 - $46,000

John Campbell (1855-1924) South Perth from Kings Park c.1904 Watercolour, pencil and bodycolour 39 x 69cm Exhibited: "Pictorial Magic, Boats on the Swan River" A City of South Perth Fiesta Exhibition 2003 Illustrated: Exhibition catalogue cover (Detail), the above exhibition Most professional standard artists, circa 1900, painted scenic landscapes. The steam paddle ferry glides past and a group of three swans paddle at the shore's edge. Unusually for Campbell, he depicts some landscape showing a sun dappled path winding through the foliage and limestone outcrops and even depicts a small natural spring in the lower right hand corner.
