THE MOST SWEEPING, AMBITIOUS PROJECT IN THE HISTORY OF CELESTIAL CARTOGRAPHY Folio (20 1/8” x 12 1/2”): π2 2π2(–2π2). 3 text-leaves (title, blank, contents, blank; duplicate title, blank), engraved title-page (Frederik Hendrik van den Hoven) and 29 double-page engraved plates, all of which with hand-color by a contemporary hand. Bound in contemporary sheep panelled in blind (re-backed). All edges of the text-block speckled red. Re-backed, with some strengthening to the fore-corners. Duplicate letter-press title-page with a repaired loss to the upper edge. Plates numbered in ink manuscript verso. With pigment oxidation to the verso of the plates, consistent with original coloration. A very good copy indeed, with fine color. Andreas Cellarius (or Keller, ca. 1596–1665) was born in Germany and worked principally in Holland. From 1637 he was rector of the Latin school in Hoorn, North Holland’s third city (after Amsterdam and Haarlem). Apart from this, little is known except for his production of the revolutionary Harmonia macrocosmica in 1660. The XVIIc was a time of revolution in the field of astronomy; Copernicus’s heliocentricity of the XVIc released science from the shackles of Aristotle, paving the way for Brahe, Galileo, Kepler and Newton. Cellarius made visible those great strides, integrating ancient astronomy and mythology and forming the armature of modern astronomical illustration. By 1708 — the publication date of this second edition, with the only change being the addition of Valk’s and Schenk’s names to the engraved title-page — the world of astronomy had progressed considerably. Newton’s publications came to reshape and to dominate the field (along with several others) from the 1680’s, and yet Cellarius’s visualizations and aestheticization of the cosmos held then as they do now an appeal that has never been surpassed. Koeman IV Cel 3.

                Est: $6,000 - $8,000

"One of the finest and most highly decorative celestial charts ever produced, from the Valk & Schenk edition of Cellarius showing the classical constellations of the Northern Hemisphere. This composition, of great artistic élan, presents a view of the constellations. According to Classical astronomy, championed by Aristotle and Ptolemy, the stars were mounted on a huge, transparent crystal sphere that was part of a geocentric system, in which all of the stars and planets revolved around the Earth." (Heald) Andreas Cellarius created this exceptional celestial map engraving featuring original hand-coloring. The engraving was published in Harmonia Macrocosmica Seu Atlas Universalis Et Novus, Totius Universi Creati Cosmographiam Generalem, Et Novam Exhibens. The work was printed in Amsterdam in 1708 by Gerard Balk & Petrus Schenk. The chart was originally published during the great era of Dutch map-making. This edition is noted by the adding of Valk & Schenk’s names to the plates. Cellarius’s work is one of the most highly decorative and noted as one of the finest celestial atlases ever produced. His atlas was done at the height of advancements in the understanding of the universe. His work blends exquisite artistry with the scientific knowledge of the heavens at the time. Cellarius was born in Germany in 1596 and worked as a schoolmaster and eventually headmaster. He published several works but Harmonia Macrocosmica is still considered his greatest publication.

"One of the finest and most highly decorative celestial charts ever produced, from the Valk & Schenck edition of Cellarius. This artistically virtuous composition represents a view of the sky of the Southern Hemisphere as considered by Ancient Greek custom. According to Classical astronomy, championed by Aristotle and Ptolemy, the stars were mounted on a huge, transparent, crystal sphere part of a divine system in which all of the stars and planets rotated around the Earth. In this chart, the figures of the zodiac form a circle within which are the constellations of the Southern sky, including Orion, Hydra, and the Southern Cross, all represented by lively Baroque figures." "This intriguing chart shows the apparent spiralling revolution of the Sun around the Earth, from the Valk & Schenk edition of Cellarius. It depicts, according to pre-Copernican belief, the apparent path of the sun as it revolves around the Earth, which through the year was thought to form a spiral pattern. It would pass from one climate zone to another, thus regulating the seasons. The Earth is shown on an axis far more pronounced than the 23.5 degrees that was later ascertained. This rather severe tilt makes the zodiacal band run almost vertically through the image. According to Classical astronomy, championed by Aristotle and Ptolemy, the universe was a geocentric system, in which the Sun, stars, and the planets revolved around the Earth." Maps in very good condition, large margins, centerfolds perfect. - 2nd edition of A. Cellarius' sumptuous celestial atlas (1st ed.: 1660) on the history and development of astronomy. Ill. with an engr. allegorical title by F.H. van den Hove and 29 pl. in 2nd state. Schenk and Valk bought the plates of the 1660 edition by J. Janssonius at the auction of 1694 and added their imprint. Richly decorated with portraits and geometrical instruments, Cellarius' work demonstrates Ptolemy's geocentric model, as well as Aratus' cosmography, the heliocentric model of Copernicus and the Tychonic system developed by Tycho Brahe. With the selling price of a copy more or less equal to the author's monthly income, this atlas was a prestigious work that few could afford. - Ref. van der Krogt I:802A. - van Gent, R.H. - "De hemelatlas van Andreas Cellarius".
