This Still life of grapes, pears, melons, and pomegranates, focused on a vivid cluster of white grapes accompanied by a split pomegranate, a squash and a few other fruits loosely arranged on the ground, is attributed to Michelangelo Cerquozzi by Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri. The painting belongs to the Roman milieu, in a phase still close to post-Caravaggesque objectivism, evident in the strong plastic modeling achieved through an oblique light emerging from a dark background, while the freer compositional structure anticipates later Baroque developments. Datable to the late 1620s, the work represents an important example of Cerquozzi’s activity as a key mediator between early Roman still-life painting and its subsequent evolution. (Roma, 1602 - 1660) Il ritorno dalla vendemmia o Allegoria dell'autunno Olio su tela, cm 48X38,5 La tela è risolta nella tipica maniera impiegata dal Cerquozzi. Sia pur particolarmente celebre nella sua veste di battaglista, tanto da meritarsi il soprannome di Michelangelo delle Battaglie, il pittore fu un sincero narratore della vita popolare del suo tempo. Formatosi attorno al terzo e quarto decennio, influenzato dal naturalismo caravaggesco e dai forestieri attivi a Roma, la sua fu una personalità di primo piano della pittura seicentesca, in virtù di un'indole narrativa e capace di indagare la realtà senza mai scadere nel sentimento pittoresco o banalmente 'bambocciante'. Questo aspetto, ben percepito da Giuliano Briganti, era altresì ben chiaro al biografo Giovan Battista Passeri, ispiratore del concetto 'della finestra aperta' al cospetto del mondo e sempre il Briganti colse lo spessore di questo 'genere', che 'si inseriva con pieno diritto, nel generale cammino verso il realismo, realismo di sguardo e di pensiero, avviato dalla cultura europea a cominciare da quel decisivo mutamento del clima intellettuale che caratterizza il passaggio dal Cinquecento al Seicento' (cfr. Briganti 1983, p. 5). Ed è sempre il Passeri a dar forma critica anche alla nostra opera narrando che: 'Michel'Angelo dietro a quella traccia [intrapresa da Pieter Van Laer detto il Bamboccio] incominciò ad operare delle baronate, in varj accidenti ridicoli ; ma di piccole figure e per lo più rusticani di contadini, Osterie, Villanelle, Passaggieri, e simili accidenti con accompagnamento di animali d'ogni genere, paesi, villaggi e cose simili. (Roma, 1602 - 1660) ANGELO GIOVANNI detto ANGELUCCIO (Roma, 1602 - 1660) Paesaggio con figure Olio su tela, cm 73,5X98 Provenienza: Collezione privata Il dipinto è una significativa aggiunta al catalogo di Michelangelo Cerquozzi e, in particolare di Angeluccio, artista, quest'ultimo, il cui catalogo conta appena venti dipinti e una trentina di disegni e la cui conoscenza si deve agli studi di Giuliano Briganti. Le prime notizie su Giovanni Angelo le abbiamo dal Lione Pascoli che lo ricorda quale unico allievo di 'grido' del Lorenese (Claude Lorrain, Chamagne, 1600 ; Roma, 1682) ma 'che mori giovine, e poco poté operare'. Si devono pertanto attendere gli studi di Marcel Röthlisberger e, come detto, del Briganti per una prima disamina del suo stile che, ai nostri occhi, esprime tuttavia una maggiore contiguità con gli esiti di Herman Swanevelt per il modo di concepire la vegetazione (Woerden, 1603 ; Parigi, 1655). Detto ciò, il pittore conseguì un reale successo, tanto da assicurarsi la committenza della famiglia Chigi e l'ingresso all'Accademia di San Luca nel 1634, fatto quanto mai raro per un artefice dedito al genere paesaggistico. GROSSES FRÜCHTESTILLLEBEN MIT KÜRBIS UND MELONE Öl auf Leinwand. 97 x 75 cm. Wiewohl der Maler auf dem Gebiet der Schlachtenbilder bereits hohes Ansehen erlangt hat, hat er gleichermaßen in einer völlig anderen Sparte, nämlich der Stilllebenmalerei, hochrangige Werke geschaffen. Zuweilen sehen wir in seinem Oeuvre eine Kombination von Genre- und Stillleben, wie etwa bei seinem „Jüngling mit Federhut der Trauben verkauft", oder seinem „Mädchen in Landschaft mit Obst und Früchten". Auch hier begnügte sich der Maler nicht mit der Präsentation der unterschiedlichsten Früchte. Bei genauerer Betrachtung lässt sich im Dunkel unter dem Steintisch das Relief einer antiken Frauengestalt erkennen. Die Früchte sind auf und unter der Tischplatte in zwei Ebenen angeordnet. Dabei liegen die schweren Kürbisse am Boden, dazwischen rotschalige Birnen. Vom Tisch herab – und noch nach oben aufgetürmt – hängen helle und dunkle Trauben und füllen zusammen mit Weinblättern und Äpfeln den gesamten Bildraum. Eine Besonderheit in nahezu allen seiner Früchtebilder sind aufgeplatzte Feigen und Granatäpfel, die sich auch hier finden, in meisterhafter Naturnähe gemalt. Anmerkung: Cerquozzi kam bereits im Alter von zwölf Jahren in die Schule des Giuseppe Cesari il Cavalier d’Aroino (1568 – 1640), von dem er die Kenntnisse des Figürlichen erwarb. Anschließend ging er zu dem flämischen Schlachtenmaler Jacob de Hase (1575 – 1634), der ihn in dessen Metier einführte. Nach 1625 war er bereits so erfolgreich, dass er in der Nähe der Piazza di Spangna ein Haus erwerben konnte. 1634 wurde er Mitglied der Accademia di San Luca. The author has conceived this work is following the costumbrista models, although he introduces a new and discordant element such as the appearance of the ruin, which becomes the protagonist of the image, although its presence may go unnoticed. However, it is the primary characteristic that indicates that the work is related to romantic painting, with which they tried to replace the large canvases of historical or religious themes, giving greater prominence to the landscape. They intended that the pure landscape, almost without figures or totally devoid of them, reach the heroic significance of history painting. They were based on the idea that human feeling and nature should be complementary, one reflected in the other. That is, the landscape should arouse emotion and transmit ideas. Thus, landscape painters like the author of this painting tried to express their feelings through the landscape, instead of imitating it. The romantic landscape had two main aspects: the dramatic, with turbulent and fantastic views, and the naturalistic, which emphasized images of a peaceful and serene nature. The Bamboccianti were genre painters, active in Rome from c. 1625 to the end of the 17th century. Most were Dutch and Flemish artists who brought to Italy the tradition of depicting costumbrist subjects, typical of 16th-century Dutch art. They generally created small cabinet works, or engravings of the daily life of the lower classes in Rome and its countryside. Despite their humble subject matter, the works found appreciation among elite collectors.

A dramatic drawing attributed to Italian Baroque artist Michelangelo Cerquozzi, also known as Michelangelo delle Battaglie, depicting a battle scene with a helmeted soldier riding a rearing horse at center, his spear piercing the back of a waving Moore. Beside him, another knight wields a long sword at a group of Moors in turbans, a pair of them lie at the foreground. Multitudes of fighting men are shown in the midground, with a group in a row boat as heads of Moors bob around in the water. A castle rises on a hill in the background with several more ships approaching to the right. Size: 12.25" W x 18" H (31.1 cm x 45.7 cm) Michelangelo Cerquozzi, known as Michelangelo delle Battaglie was an Italian Baroque painter known for his genre scenes, battle pictures, small religious and mythological works and still lifes. His genre scenes were influenced by the work of the Flemish and Dutch genre artists referred to as the Bamboccianti active in Rome who created small cabinet paintings and prints of the everyday life of the lower classes in Rome and its countryside. One of the leading battle painters active in Italy in the first half of the 17th century, Michelangelo Cerquozzi earned the nickname 'Michelangelo delle Battaglie' ('Michelangelo of the Battles'). About the artist: "Michelangelo Cerquozzi was much admired by his fellow artists. His two closest friends were painters - Domenico Viola and Giacinto Brandi - and he was on excellent terms with Pietro da Cortona. He was always generous with younger men, and he went out of his way to encourage his potential rival Giacomo Borgognone. We also know that some of his most important admirers and patrons came from the professional classes. There was, for instance, the distinguished lawyer Raffaelo Marchesi to whom he bequeathed some of his works, and the doctor Vincenzo Neri whom with a group of other friends he immortalized in one of his finest paintings. Cerquozzi was soon taken up by some of the leading aristocratic families, but of a kind rather different from those who circled around the Barberini court and helped to spread the fame of artists such as Romanelli, Poussin and Testa. His first great successes were apparently painted for an official at the Spanish embassy, and it is possible that he may have been employed there at the very time that Velasquez came to stay as a guest of the Ambassador Monterey in 1630. There is also some evidence to suggest that both Cerquozzi and Velasquez painted bambocciate for the most important of the Hispanophil clans in Rome, the Colonna... Certainly Cerquozzi's career was closely linked to Spain and her supporters in Rome. He himself used to wear Spanish dress and until his later years nearly all his more important patrons were within the Spanish sphere of influence... Whatever their political affiliation, most of these families showed a striking contrast in taste with the more cultivated Barberini circle. They tended to ignore the grander history painters and the noble balance between classicism and Venetian colour which these artists were fostering as well as the exuberance of the Baroque... And yet Cerquozzi's success with the aristocratic society of Rome is certainly reflected in his art. As far as dating can be established at all, it seems that the small pictures with scenes from popular life belong mostly to his early years when he was closely following Van Laer and largely working for dealers, but that later he turned more and more to much larger pictures, which were painted to commission, and that he then widened the range of his subject-matter. There is not much reason for believing that this change was the direct result of specific pressures from his patrons, for we know that the more authentically popular and coarse bambocciate continued to fetch very high prices. Rather it seems to have sprung naturally from his closer association with them and, consequently, from a gradual acceptance of their values - a process not unknown among artists of all kinds since Cerquozzi's day." Cerquozzi's most accomplished pictures blend the naturalism of the Bamboccianti with strong narrative or anecdotal characteristics, exemplified here by the comedic element of the dog crouching in the foreground.Angeluccio is a more enigmatic artist by comparison, whose real name, nationality, and dates are unknown to us today. He is recorded, however, as a student of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682): the biographer Pascoli mentions him in 1730, noting that: 'Claude only had one well-known student, Angeluccio, who died young and could do little work.'1 The staffage in his pictures was usually executed by Cerquozzi, as in the present example, or else by Jan Miel (1599-1664). Interestingly, Angeluccio was also known as a draughtsman of plant studies. One of his sheets in the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen, Berlin, may have been used as a preliminary study for the lower left quadrant of this painting.21 M. Provenienza: Pesaro, mercato antiquario (1993, come Michelangelo Cerquozzi) Vignola, Collezione Bizzini (1993, come Maestro della natura morta Acquavella) Venezia, Semenzato, 21 marzo 2006, lotto 47 (come Agostino Verrocchio) Collezione privata Bibliografia: Archivio Federico Zeri, n. 86529 (come Maestro della natura morta Acquavella e con segnalata una perizia di Federico Zeri del 23 gennaio 1994) Innegabilmente di alta qualità, come suggeriscono le importanti attribuzioni susseguitesi nel tempo e l'autorevole giudizio di Federico Zeri, che non esitò a riconoscerle al Maestro della natura morta Acquavella, le tele in esame si riconoscono senza indugi alla scuola romana. Prendendo atto delle difficoltà linguistiche che pone il genere naturamortistico, si devono però riconsiderare i caratteri di stile e questi conducono a rivalutare il primo riferimento a Michelangelo Cerquozzi (Roma, 1602 ; 1660), in modo particolare per la costruzione scenica, le esuberanti stesure pittoriche e il modo di rendere il fogliame. Come sappiamo, il pittore è celebre per le sue battaglie e scene di genere ma, Giovan Battista Passeri e Filippo Baldinucci, suoi primi biografi, non esitano a definirlo abile pittore di nature morte e verosimilmente allievo di Agostino Verrocchi. L'influenza del Verrocchi è qui evidente e spiega il disguido attributivo avvenuto, mentre il riferimento al Maestro Acquavella (pittore poi riconosciuto nella personalità di Bartolomeo Cavarozzi da Gianni Papi) proposto da Zeri, è stato recentemente motivato da Laura Laureati ascrivendo in questo caso allo studioso una catalogazione influenzata da una lettura botanica, facendo presente la sua giovanile passione per le scienze naturali (Cfr. L. Laureati, Dal Maestro della natura morta Acquavella a Michelangelo Cerquozzi. Un'ipotesi di lavoro, in La Natura morta di Federico Zeri, a cura di A. Bacchi, F. Mambelli, E. Sambo, Bologna 2015, pp. 169-177). Detto ciò, ai nostri occhi si pone un altro importante quesito, ossia la distinzione tra le opere di Michelangelo e del suo allievo e abile collaboratore Francesco del Conte, in particolare facendo riferimento alle tele della Galleria Sabauda. Alcuni passaggi pittorici, infatti, possono indurre a questa ipotesi, tenendo però in considerazione l'ingiallimento delle vernici e che queste siano state verosimilmente distese su una superficie non pulita a dovere, attenuando la lettura di alcuni brani, fermo restando che, senza nulla togliere al formidabile occhio di Zeri, si tratta di sottili distingui filologici e che non inficiano il giudizio sulla qualità. (Roma, 1602 - 1660) Paesaggio con pastori Olio su tela, cm 49,5X62 I caratteri di stile suggeriscono l'assegnazione a un pittore di cultura centro-meridionale, formatosi a Roma attorno al terzo e quarto decennio e attinente ai valori pittorici del naturalismo caravaggesco. Queste prime indicazioni e l'analisi delle figure conducono la nostra ricerca al confronto con le opere di Michelangelo Cerquozzi. Il riferimento è altresì avvalorato dalle fisionomie e dalla sprezzatura con cui è realizzato il paesaggio, la trama del tessuto pittorico e il realismo con cui l'artista ha descritto il gruppo di pastori. Allievo del Cavalier D'Arpino e del fiammingo Jacob de Hase, Cerquozzi acquisì una approfondita esperienza dei diversi generi artistici. Altresì importante per la sua formazione fu il Gobbo dei Carracci e la cerchia di Casa Crescenzi, in modo particolare per quanto riguarda la creazione di nature morte, ma sin dalle prime opere autonome appare chiara la propensione a non raffigurare tematiche auliche e storiche. Di notevole fama sono infatti le scene a carattere bambocciante sulla scia di Pieter van Laer. Possiamo quindi affermare che Cerquozzi diede al genere bambocciante d'origine nordica una sincera interpretazione caravaggesca, tuttavia, nella sua produzione si contano anche opere a carattere sacro, come la lunetta ad olio raffigurante il Miracolo di San Francesco da Paola per il chiostro del convento di S. They are lit by a clear cool light, atmospherically reminiscent of lunar light. The three-dimensional volume of the objects emerges thanks to the handling of the light, which singles out the individual form of each fruit and this effect is further emphasised by the way in which the fig leaf and the pear seemingly spill over the fore-edge of the stone ledge they are set upon. Michelangelo Cerquozzi’s first biographers Giovanni Battista Passeri and Filippo Baldinucci described him as dedicated to painting still lifes, battle scenes and genre pictures or bambocciate. He was first apprenticed to the still life painter Agostino Verrocchi. He became well integrated within the circle of artists active in mid-seventeenth century Rome, including Pietro da Cortona, Domenico Viola and Giacinto Brandi.
