Hungarian by birth, Mathias Polakovits moved to Paris in 1949, and became a journalist for Paris-Match from 1954 to 1969. Thenceforward, he devoted himself to collecting drawings, particularly of the French School. He had a particular interest in preparatory sketches for paintings (as in the present work), and according to Raoul Ergmann, was 'possédé par les démons de la quête, de la découverte, de l'achat, de l'identification' (Raoul Ergmann, 'Le Fruit de la Passion', Connaissance des Arts, Avril 1989, p. 112). Following his death, several sales of drawings from his collection took place in Paris, the most recent being 'Dessins Anciens. Ancienne collection Mathias Polakovits, Paris, Madame Chr. Joron-Derem, 30 June 2018 (152 lots). Study for the frescoed Allegory of Fame painted in 1613–15 on the ceiling of the Villa Lante, Bagnaia (Palazzina Montalto), near Viterbo. The correspondence in anatomy and lighting of the neck is exact, although the hair is less luxuriant. A drawing for the whole figure, made earlier in the 1590s and later recycled for Bagnaia, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. no. 1986.318). A comparable finished black and red chalk head study of the Virgin, datable circa 1635-40, is in a private collection (Marco Simone Bolzoni, Il Cavalier Giuseppe Cesari d’Arpino: Maestro del disegno, Rome, 2013, number 305).

L’opera qui presentata si inserisce all’interno di quella preziosa produzione realizzata dal Cavalier d’Arpino per la committenza privata, composta per lo più da tavole, supporti lapidei o, come in questo caso, rami lucenti. A differenza della maggior parte delle opere di questo genere, che presentano per lo più soggetti di tipo religioso destinati alla devozione privata, il dipinto in oggetto si distingue per il tema raffigurato dal forte ed evidente valore simbolico. All’interno di un elegante scorcio di giardino, due cavalieri sono raffigurati nell’atto di sfidarsi in una sorta di giostra, sotto lo sguardo vigile di alcuni personaggi a cavallo e di una fanciulla che regge tra le mani un elmo. In primo piano, dando le spalle alla scena principale ma rivolta invece verso lo spettatore, si staglia una donna dallo sguardo fiero, avvolta in un prezioso abito giallo con drappo rosso, che sorregge nella mano destra una lancia. Ai suoi piedi giacciono come abbandonati uno scudo, una spada e un’elmo scintillanti. La postura e gli attributi della donna suggeriscono che possa trattarsi di una figura allegorica, probabile personificazione della Fortezza, raffigurata nell’atto di vegliare sul duello in atto. olio su rame

Bolzoni, The drawings of Cavalier Giuseppe Cesari d'Arpino: A Supplement, in Master Drawings, Vol. 61, Number 3, 2023, pp. 331-356; p. 335, fig. 12 Il dipinto spicca per le notevoli dimensioni e una qualità avvalorata da uno stato conservativo eccellente e trova confronti con l'Adorazione dei pastori e l'Adorazione dei Magi eseguite dall'artista alla metà degli anni Novanta nella cappella Aldobrandini in Santa Maria in Via a Roma. In queste due opere riscontriamo una comune sensibilità cromatica, le medesime fisionomie e una peculiare attenzione ai brani di natura morta. La narrazione dell'episodio evangelico fu più volte affrontato dal Cesari, ricordiamo ad esempio la Fuga in Egitto del Museum of Fine Arts di Boston, un tempo della collezione Barberini (1597 circa, olio su rame, cm 43X32; Röttgen 2002, p. 286, cat. 71), oppure la variante al tema custodito alla Galleria Borghese (1595 circa, olio su tavola, cm 45X33; cfr. Röttgen 2002, p. 286, n. 56) in cui avvertiamo una simile interpretazione della natura che, grazie alle dimensioni, nel nostro caso si sviluppa assumendo un preponderante e quanto mai inusuale ruolo scenico. Questa attenzione al paesaggio si spiega grazie ai documentati rapporti del Cavaliere con il fiammingo Paul Brill (Anversa, 1554 ; Roma, 1626) che insieme al fratello Matthijs (Anversa, 1550 ; Roma, 1583) è documentato a Roma dall'ottavo decennio sovvertendo l'interpretazione del genere paesistico (cfr. 2006, p. 233, cat. 41 e 41a, p. 245, cat. 58, p. 262, cat. 86, p. 312, cat. 185). Nondimeno, il Cesari evoca anch'esso una natura dai colori preziosi, in cui le foglie degli alberi, l'acqua e il cielo richiamano la vitalità del creato, ma è importante ribadire che in nessuna altra opera l'autore ha dedicato un così ampio spazio al paesaggio e l'esito qualitativo ci spiega il dominio incontrastato da lui raggiungo alla fine del Cinquecento. RUHE AUF DER FLUCHT NACH ÄGYPTEN Öl auf Leinwand. 140 x 180 cm. In breitem vergoldetem Rahmen. Wir danken Prof. Marco Simone Bolzoni für die Bestätigung der Zuschreibung an den genannten Künstler. Inmitten einer hügeligen Landschaft mit vegetabiler Staffage, die dem Thema angeglichten ist, sitzt links die Heilige Mutter Gottes mit einem Handarbeitskästchen. Zu ihrer linken Seite steht Josef, darunter eine Assistenzfigur über einem Sattel lehnend, der zu einem Esel im Hintergrund gehört. Die rechte Bildhälfte wird von Jesus und Johannes als Kind bespielt. Das Gesicht der Jungfrau Maria – mit ihrer fein zugespitzten Nase, dem kleinen, kecken Mund und den großen, halb verschleierten Augen – erinnert an dieselbe Figur in d’Arpinos „Anbetung der Heiligen Drei Könige“ sowie an den Erzengel in seiner „Verkündigung“, beide Fresken in der Aldobrandini-Kapelle der Kirche Santa Maria in Via in Rom. Dieser Gesichtstyp findet sich auch in seiner „Madonna mit dem Kind, dem heiligen Hieronymus und einem Engel“, die im Jahr 2000 bei Sotheby’s in London angeboten wurde. Cesari wurde in Arpino bei Rom geboren und arbeitete hauptsächlich in Rom, wo er für Päpste und den römischen Adel tätig war. Er war bekannt für seine eleganten, idealisierten Figuren und seine leuchtenden Farben. Zu seinen wichtigsten Werken zählen die Fresken in der Kirche San Luigi dei Francesi und im Palazzo dei Conservatori. Cesari war Lehrer des jungen Caravaggio, dessen späterer realistischer Stil im deutlichen Kontrast zu Cesaris manieristischer Eleganz steht. Provenienz: Sotheby’s New York, 29. Giuseppe Cesari (Rome, ca. 1568 – July 3, 1640) was an Italian Mannerist painter known as Il Giuseppino or the Knight of Arpino (il Cavaliere d'Arpino), because he was invested as a Knight of Christ (Cavaliere di Cristo) by Pope Clement VIII who, along with Sixtus V, was one of its protectors. Although Cesari's father was originally from Arpino, Giuseppe was born in Rome, where he was apprenticed to Niccolò Circignani. In 1585 he entered the Academy of Saint Luke. In 1607 he was briefly imprisoned by the papal administration. He died in Rome in 1640. His brother Bernardino Cesari collaborated with him on many of his works. Among his students were his sons Muzio (1619-1676) and Bernardino (died 1703) and, apparently, Pier Francesco Mola (1612-66), Francesco Allegrini da Gubbio, Guido Ubaldo Abatini, Vincenzo Manenti and Bernardino Parasol. His most notable student was Caravaggio, who entered Cesari's workshop around 1593-94 as a painter of flowers and fruits. Um 1587/88. -- -- Giuseppe Cesari begann seine Laufbahn als Freskant in Rom, wo er seit spätestens 1583 Mitglied der Accademia di San Luca und früh an prestigeträchtigen Aufträgen beteiligt war. Doch dass sich sein Renommee innerhalb von kürzester Zeit weit über die Grenzen Roms hinaus verbreitete, war vielmehr seinen kleinformatigen Gemälde geschuldet, die als gesuchte Sammlerstücke ihren Weg in die Paläste hochrangiger Auftraggeber aus ganz Europa fanden. Diese Art der Kabinettmalerei hatte in Rom im letzten Drittels des 16. Jahrhunderts noch keine lange Tradition, sodass sich Cesari auf diesem Gebiet als führender Maler der Papststadt etablieren konnte. Das früheste bekannte Beispiel für ein solches Gemälde ist laut Herwarth Röttgen unsere Himmelfahrt Mariens. In diesem Jugendwerk steht die Muttergottes einer himmlischen Vision gleich mit verklärt aufblickenden Augen und von Engeln umgeben in einem Wolkenkranz vor einer golden leuchtenden Glorie. Gestalterisch zeichnet sich das Andachtsbild durch die grazile Eleganz der Formen und der sinnlich harmonischen Palette aus, die in großzügigen Farbflächen organisierten ist. Inhaltlich ist die Auslegung des mariologischen Bildthemas ganz und gar mystisch und appelliert damit im Sinne der Gegenreformation nicht an den Verstand, sondern an die Herzen der Betrachter. Röttgen datiert das Gemälde in die Jahre 1587/88, als Cesari gerade einmal 20 Jahr alt war, womit der Kunsthistoriker kleine ikonographische Ungenauigkeiten erklärt, wie Mariens Grußgeste mit dem linken anstatt dem rechten Arm und das Fehlen des Grabes. Ungeachtet dessen kündigt sich im Verzicht auf narrative Elemente zugunsten einer gefühlsbetonten Inszenierung die auf visuelle Überwältigung abzielende Kunst an, die im nachfolgenden Jahrhundert etwa Guido Reni in seinen Madonnenbildern (z.B. Italy,1568-1640 Depicts a seated male nude figure glancing to the side beneath a tree while a dog lays curled up beside his feet. At the age of fourteen, Cesari worked as an assistant under artist Niccolo Circignani, and although young, undertook the decorations of various rooms of the Vatican and the Palazzo del Quirinale for Pope Gregory XIII. With the accession of Pope Clement VIII, Cesari became the principal painter fot the pope and was given the title Cavaliere dell’ ordine di Cristo. Cesari went on to work alongside various popes and on various buildings, serving three terms as the principe of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. Among his students was Caravaggio who worked with him until the late 1590's.

Kampf der Horatier und Kurien Öl auf Leinwand. 103 x 273 cm. In Profilrahmen. Die Szene wird eindrucksvoll von einem Fresco übernommen, das Giuseppe Cesari Ende des 16. und Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts ausführte. Diese Fresken, die ursprünglich als Wandteppiche zur Dekoration für die Wände gedacht waren, stellen historische Episoden aus dem alten Rom dar, die auch die darunter liegenden monochromen Medaillons inspirieren. Sie sind in den Kapitolinischen Museen zu bewundern. Cesari erhielt 1595 den Auftrag den Raum zu dekorieren und 1600 sollte der Raum fertig dekoriert sein, jedoch wurden erst 1613 die ersten Szenen komplettiert. Nach einer Pause wurde der Raum dann 1640 fertig. Die Fresken zeigen die Geschichte Roms nach Titus Livius, sodass 1612-1613 das Fresko entstand, das eine Episode aus dem Krieg wiedergibt, den Rom gegen die benachbarte Stadt Alba Longa führte und der in einem Zweikampf zwischen den Römern, den Brüdern Horatii und den Brüdern Curatii aus Alba Longa endete. Die rivalisierenden Armeen werden Zeugen der Schlussszene des Duells, als der letzte der Horatii den letzten seiner Gegner zu besiegen im Begriff ist. Sin da ragazzino emerge la sua volontà di essere pittore e a soli 14 anni: prima è macinatore di colori nei lavori al terzo piano della Loggia del Palazzo Vaticano, poi partecipa alla pratica della pittura decorativa a fresco. Protetto da papa Gregorio XIII, Sisto V, Clemente VIII, Paolo V, tanto da poterlo definire quasi un pittore di corte, sebbene gli sia stata offerta massima libertà d’impresa. Alle contorsioni plastiche dei manieristi, egli contrappone la dignità iconica ed estatica dei profeti e apostoli anziani, il fascino e la grazia della gioventù di ambo i sessi, grazie al suo senso naturale verso la bellezza decorativa e della pienezza dei colori. Queste caratteristiche corrispondono al suo temperamento, esattamente come il senso dell’eleganza e del movimento. Nel 1583 è ammesso all’Accademia Artistica di S. Luca di cui sarà eletto membro e poi presidente più volte fino al 1631 quando lo sostuisce il Bernini. Tre anni più tardi è ammesso nella Congregazione dei Virtuosi del Pantheon; conseguentemente sono giunte al Cesari commesse sempre più prestigiose come i grandi affreschi per San Lorenzo in Damaso. Questi affreschi sono l’esplicazione dell’arte del Cavaleir d’Arpino in quanto fondono la grazia di Raffello e Michelangelo con Guido Reni, Domenichino e Pietro da Cortona. Intorno al 1590, fa un viaggio in nord Italia per perfezionare le sue conoscenze pittoriche. Il risultato lo si avverte negli affreschi della Cappella Olgiati (1592), capolavoro assoluto dell’artista, che inaugura un nuovo brillante modo di dipingere con una gamma cromatica rinvigorita sotto l’influsso della pittura toscana ed emiliana: Pontormo a Firenze, Correggio a Parma, il Gatti e il Campi a Cremona, lo Scarsellino a Venezia. Raggiunge l’apice della sua carriera diventando il pittore preferito del pontificato Aldobrandini e ottenendo le commesse più significative in Vaticano e nell’Urbe, come la decorazione del Salone dei Conservatori in Campidoglio e Il gigantesco affresco della "Battaglia dei Romani e dei Veienti" (Roma, Palazzo dei Conservatori, 1597/98). Successivamente, insieme agli affreschi, esegue molti quadri di piccole dimensioni, come la pregiata tela della Cattura di Cristo, una drammatica scena notturna definita dal Bellori, che pur ripudia il Cesari, "la più bella opera che facesse il Cavaliere". Le luci violente danno un senso di drammaticità alla scena, un dipinto probabilmente fondamentale per il giovane Michelangelo Merisi detto il Caravaggio, che per alcuni mesi frequenta la bottega del Cesari. Alla morte di Clemente VIII, il suo successore Paolo V affida al Cesari la supervisione della decorazione pittorica della Cappella Paolina di S. Maria Maggiore, ove egli si rifà a Raffaello e Michelangelo e agli ideali del Rinascimento, ovvero alludendo al classicismo raffaellesco con citazioni della scuola bolognese e Guido Reni in particolare. Non attirato dai primi richiami del Barocco il Cavalier d’Arpino non segue i nuovi orientamenti di cultura e di gusto, indirizzandosi ad una maniera severa, rigida, quasi reazionaria, nascono dipinti velati di melanconica, fredda e irreale, fondati su una cromia raffinatissima, sofisticata e coinvolgente
