Work: 87 x 67,5 cm Frame: 108,5 x 90,5 cm The prime version of this work is part of the collection of theLos Angeles County Museum of Art (link).The work offered differs from that version in a number of elements,where, for example, the books at the saint's feet have been omitted.A more remarkable difference, however, is that in the known version, Saint Augustine holds a burning heart in his hand (based on the frontispice of the book on Augustinus, which was pulished by Jansenius in 1640, link). In the version offered here, the heart has been replaced by a corpus. Bernard Dorival, expert on Philippe de Champaigne, writes about this in a letter dated 16 September 2003. His suggestion is that the work probably originated in a function of a more Jansenist context. Ref.: - A similar painting (100 x 80 cm) of Saint Augustineofthe workshop of Philippe de Champaigne was sold in 2021 for €186.620 (link).

PHILIPPE DE CHAMPAIGNE , BRUSSELS, 1602 - PARIS, 1674 Portrait of Hardouin Beaumont de Pérefixe (1606-1671) Oil on canvas 71 x 54.5 cm. At the centre of the composition, following a classic pyramid scheme, this prelate imposes his presence and his prestige, adorned with the attributes of social and ecclesiastical success. Thus, on his purple moiré robe, reserved for bishops, he displays the prestigious royal decoration of the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit, added to the portrait at a later date. A former tutor to King Louis XIV, bishop of Rodez and then archbishop of Paris, this churchman was an eminent figure in the kingdom, which enabled him to be portrayed by the official court painter, Philippe de Champaigne. However, this portraitist, who was accustomed to the great people of the world, knew how to depict his subjects with a psychological acuity that shows both their humanity and their social rank. Thus, the gaze of this aristocrat reveals a certain humility that is contradicted by his posture and attire. The slightly lowered, sideways gaze avoids confrontation with the viewer. The grey, neutral background also lends an austerity to this man who was also an ardent enemy of Jansenism, forcing the nuns of Port-Royal to sign the 'form' refuting their theses, which were considered heretical. He was also the censor of Molière's Tartuffe. Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674) was a French painter considered the leader of French classicism. Born in Brussels, he came to Paris to train in the studio of Georges Lallemant at the age of 19, where he learned history painting. Noticed by Marie de Médicis, he became in 1628, 'ordinary painter of the queen mother' and realized many decorations with religious subjects for the palace of Luxembourg, then, for Richelieu, in the Palais-Cardinal and under the dome of the Sorbonne. Finally, he executed six paintings for the Val-de-Grâce, at the request of Anne of Austria. An excellent portraitist, he painted several portraits of Louis XIII and became the only painter authorised to paint Cardinal de Richelieu in the cardinal's robes, whom he portrayed on eleven occasions. In 1648, he was accepted as a founding member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, where he gave numerous lectures, including the famous one on the painting Eliezer and Rebekah by Poussin, of whom he was a friend. A painter of austere and spiritual compositions, he became close to Jansenist circles and became the painter of Port-Royal, executing in particular the portraits of Arnaud d'Andilly and of the mother Angélique Arnauld. Sought after for his ability to capture psychological traits, he was also the portraitist of high society in the Grand siècle and, as such, painted this portrait of the Archbishop of Paris, who was nevertheless hostile to his own ideas. (Brussels 1602–1674 Paris) Portrait of Claude de Bullion (1569–1640), oil on panel, 33 x 23.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private collection, Germany We are grateful to Lorenzo Pericolo for confirming the attribution to Philippe de Champaigne after examination of the present painting in the original. The present work is a variant study for a portrait of Claude de Bullion. It may be compared with the portrait of the same sitter in Knole House, Surrey (inv. no NT 129833.) The present picture is less extensively worked than the portrait at Knole, and shows the sitter with a more reserved, less open expression, as was in keeping with contemporary courtly notions of stoicism. Claude de Bullion was Minster of Finance under Louis XIII, and is portrayed with the monarch and the other members of the Ordre du Saint Esprit, of which he was Chancellor, in a significant work by de Champaigne of 1634/35, The Reception of the Duke of Longueville into the Order of Saint-Esprit (293 x 400 cm, Musée des Augustins, Toulouse). Marked stylistically both by his Flemish origins, and his work in Paris, where he was a founder of the Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture, his practice of working out confidently and rapidly his compositions directly onto panel may be seen both in the present picture and in the Knole House version.

Philippe de CHAMPAIGNE (Bruxelles 1602 – Paris 1674) Portrait de François Pallu Toile 65 x 54 cm Porte une inscription postérieure ‘Francois Pallv evesqve de Chine’ (fin XVIIe s.) L’authentification de l’oeuvre inédite a été faite par M. José Gonçalves, auteur du catalogue raisonné de Philippe de Champaigne, qui l’inclura dans son prochain « Modificatif ». Le P. François Pallu, né à Tours en 1626, est le fils d’Etienne Pallu, maire de Tours de 1611 à 1613. Son oncle, le P. Victor Pallu, était médecin à Port-Royal et c’est sans doute grâce à lui qu’il rencontra Philippe de Champaigne. Fondateur des Missions étrangères de Paris, Pallu part en Asie, avec le titre de vicaire apostolique (du Tonkin et de cinq provinces du sud-ouest de la Chine) et d’évêque in partibus d’Heliopolis. Il dirige en 1684 le diocèse de Fou-Tchéou (aujourd’hui Fuzhou). Il meurt la même année dans la province du Sétchouan. L’oeuvre a été rentoilée et posée sur un nouveau châssis au XIXe s. Légères restaurations récentes de la peinture. 30 000 - 40 000 € OIL ON CANVAS; 25,6 X 21,3 IN; PAINTED CIRCA 1653.

Sphere of Philippe de CHAMPAIGNE [The Assumption of Virgin Mary]. 17th c Drawing, black stone and pencil, grey ink wash, silverpoint, 48,5 x 38 cm (middle horiz. fold line, some tiny spots, tear in the upper side, ms. mention of a price at bottom). Presumably a preparatory drawing for a print (book frontispiece?). The Virgin is seated on a cloud with angels, the apostles kneeling or standing below. Decorated frame with upper/lower blind cartouches and coat-of-arms on upper corners (left for a cardinal, right for the king of France). Philippe de Champaigne (Brussels 1602-1674 Paris) was a Baroque painter and a founding member of the "Académie de peinture et de sculpture" in Paris, the first fine arts institution in France in the 18th c. From 1640 onwards, he came under the influence of Jansenism. Prov. [Georges Petit].
