John Angus Chamberlain Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, Photographer, Painter, b. 1927 - d. 2011

(b Rochester, Indiana, 1927) American sculptor. Chamberlain is known for his sculptures of crushed materials and pieces of metal and steel found in junkyards; typically employing automobile lacquer, foam, rubber, paper, Plexiglas and bright hues of industrial paint. His pieces are often constructed in a way that suggests halted movement. From 1943 to 1946 Chamberlain served in the Navy before attending the Art Institute of Chicago in 1951. Influenced by David Smith, he began working in metals. In 1955 he attended and taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina until 1956. His work evolved from constructing flat, metal sculptures in the early 1950s, to using metal automobile scraps and crushed parts almost exclusively from 1959 on. Successful in the 1960s, Chamberlain exhibited his sculptures widely, including: The Art of Assemblage exhibition at MOMA in New York; the Sa Paulo Bienal; and the Venice Biennale. In addition to sculpture, Chamberlain has also experimented with painting, creating geometric works from sprayed automobile paint, and panoramic photography. He has received two John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowships, as well as the International Sculpture Center’s Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture and Lifetime Achievement Award in Contemporary Sculpture.

    John Chamberlain: Fleabane (Marsh)

    Est: €30,000 - €50,000

CHAMBERLAIN, JOHN 1927 Rochester, IN/USA - 2011 New York Title: Fleabane (Marsh). Date: 1973. Technique: Aluminium foil with acrylic varnish and synthetic resin. Measurement: 43 x 48 x 58,5cm. Provenance: - Ivan Karp, USA (directly from the artist) - Ben Birillo Collection, USA - Mourtala Diop Collection, Dakar - Gallery Guy Pieters, Knokke-Heist - Private collection - Collection Kasper König, Berlin Literature: - Sylvester, Julie: John Chamberlain, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Sculpture 19954-1985, New York 1986, cat. rais. no. 423, ill. Few artists of the 20th century influenced sculpture as much as the American John Chamberlain. His oeuvre, which includes painting and photography as well as sculpture, shows the influence his work had on later art. Chamberlain is not only regarded as an outstanding representative of Abstract Expressionism, but is also recognized as one of the pioneers of Pop Art. "American marble" In contrast to traditional sculpture, Chamberlain's works are neither cast nor modeled. His sculptures are mostly made from disused car body parts, which the artist calls "American marble". Chamberlain transforms the body parts by stretching, compressing, cutting and crumpling them into shape. He then joins the individual parts together in a harmonious way. This results in balanced compositions of form as well as oscillating worlds of color: A novelty in sculpture, which in the classical tradition is almost exclusively monochrome. However, it is not only in the use of color that Chamberlain pushes the boundaries of the genre of sculpture. Instead of carving and modeling, the artist's underlying motivation is to assemble elements. It is hardly surprising and only logical that Chamberlain himself sees his sculptural works as a follow-up to and further development of collage. He collects the material for his works in scrap yards. The basic form and color of the object are decisive selection criteria. Chamberlain combines different elements to create a balanced composition - both in terms of color and form. Fleabane (Marsh) The dazzling colorfulness that is so characteristic of Chamberlain's work is particularly evident in this work from 1973. Green, golden yellow and red tones flow smoothly into one another and lend the compressed and pressed form of the sphere a lightness and quality that almost makes the viewer forget that discarded steel parts from the scrapyard form the basis of this sculpture. Its simple elegance inevitably remains in the viewer's memory. The present work clearly demonstrates the effortlessness and simultaneous virtuosity with which Chamberlain creates a natural balance between color and form composition in his sculptures. As a logical consequence of this unique talent, his work can be found today in the most important international art collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Tate Gallery in London. JOHN CHAMBERLAIN (1927 - 2011, AMERICAN) Untitled.

    Est: $30,000 - $50,000

JOHN CHAMBERLAIN (1927 - 2011, AMERICAN) Untitled. Steel, 1954. 229x200x760 mm; 9x8x3 inches. Provenance: gifted by the artist to Joel Oppenheimer and Rena Oppenheimer (later Rena Rosequist.) 1956; thence by descent to current owner, private collection, New York. Published: Julie Sylvester, "John Chamberlain: A Catalogue Raisonné of the Sculpture 1954-1985", 1986, page 44, number 3 (illustrated). According to Sylvester, this sculpture was made by Chamberlain (1927-2011) very early in his career in Chicago; it is his first sculpture made from steel rods. Rena Rosequist (born Rena Furlong, 1931-2019) was born in Hickory, North Carolina and attended the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, where she was exposed to the work of young modern artists, like Jackson Pollock (1912-1956). After graduation, she attended the progressive Black Mountain College and continued her studies in art and art history. During her time at Black Mountain College, Rosequist met her first husband, poet Joel Oppenheimer (1930-1988), who attended until 1953. By 1955, Chamberlain (1927-2011) had followed friend and fellow artist, Gerry van de Wiele (born 1932) from the Art Institute of Chicago to Black Mountain College, where Chamberlain would meet Rosequist (Chamberlain attended Black Mountain College from 1955 to 1956). Eventually Oppenheimer, Rosequist, and Chamberlain migrated to New York, and though Oppenheimer and Rosequist divorced by 1960, Rosequist and the itinerant Chamberlain kept in touch. Rosequist moved to Taos, New Mexico and operated the Mission Gallery with her second husband Ivan Rosquist (d. 1985) from 1962 until shortly before her death in 2019.
