Marvin Chan Sold at Auction Prices

A self-taught artist, Marvin Chan has made the transition from an advertising practitioner to a visual artist in his first solo called First Harvest at a2 Gallery, Penang in 2007. He was twice a recipient of the Freeman Fellowship in Vermont in the United States, first with a partial grant in 2007, and then as an alternate artist in 2008 to 2010. He was also selected for the Commonwealth Connections art residency in 2009, the year in which he also won the BP Portrait Award. He has exhibited in numerous group shows namely Skin at House of Matahati in 2012, MASIF 2011 at Galeri Petronas and a solo show at Wei-Ling Gallery in 2010 titled Inconsequential Consequences of Hope in 2010. Besides exhibiting in Malaysia, his artworks have been shown in London and South Korea and held in private collections in Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, the United States and Italy. His works were recently displayed in a group exhibition titled Stepping Out, in collaboration with Galeri Chandan Kuala Lumpur and Jada Art Singapore at Art Stage Singapore in 2015 alongside Chong Ai Lei, Chong Siew Ying and Kow Leong Kiang.

        The live drawing session at Sutra culminated in a direct rendition of a couple created with lively brushstrokes and painterly handling of forms. The artist focuses on the poise of the captivating female dancer looking towards the distance. In this study, a variety of purple and brown tones were used to create an atmospheric composition.         A unique piece created through the special collaboration between Marvin Chan and Izan Tahir, both dynamic artists who have prolific experience in design. In mesmerising purple and mauve shades, the work emphasises on the flesh and contours of the human body, expressed with a sculptural quality. The title hints towards modes of self-acceptance and openness, by trusting and embracing the self. Marvin Chan has made the transition from an advertising practitioner to a visual artist in his first solo called First Harvest at a2 Gallery, Penang in 2007. His solo exhibition Serpents In The Sun was held at Suma Orientalis Fine Art in 2019. UK and Malaysia based printmaker, Izan Tahir, has practised and refined her craft for decades. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree at the London College of Communication, now a constituent college of the University of the Arts London. Her artmaking is an intersection of studio-based work with graphic design sensibilities. She was formerly responsible for corporate and national portfolios.

        The enchanting face of a young person with a serene expression and charming brown eyes occupies most of the canvas space, suffused with the ethereal glow of light. This work is composed of triangular shaped tessellations with colour gradations built to enhance a sense of three dimensionality. Marvin employed a soft rosy palette with light tones oscillating between pink, brown, cream, and beige.         Marvin Chan is a story-teller of contemporary themes, seamlessly and aggressively moving into art from advertising, but the relative newcomer even made it to the Art Stage Singapore. This work, a special commission, first featured in the Henry Butcher Art Auction on October 28, 2012, and sold at the artist’s then record price of RM9,350. It depicts Krishna’s muse, Radha, yearning for her lover-boy, and imagining him in her dreams.Self-taught, Marvin Chan broke into the art scene in his first solo, First Harvest, at a2 Gallery in Penang in 2007, followed by Inconsequential Consequences of Hope at the Wei-Ling Gallery in 2010. He was given a residency at the Vermont Studio Centre in the United States in 2010.
