The Mexican-Peruvian sculptor Aldo Chaparro creates unique sculptures in steel and transforms it into delicate folded forms using only his own body weight. The raw material of the present works is a sheet of steel, one red, one unfinished: a machine-made metal plate standardised for slenderness, perfection and a shiny reflective surface. The end product is a paper-like, crumpled object that has little in common with the original source material. Chaparro subjects the metal to a transformation, changing it from something seemingly austere and formal into a fragile, supple object, while still allowing the material the freedom to develop on its own. Although he uses his entire body weight as he leans on the plate and exerts force, the steel surfaces retain a certain autonomy as they determine their own folds and shapes. In this way, a wide variety of angles, reflections and plays of light are created by chance, which in the case of the present works is further accentuated by the colouring. Der mexikanisch-peruanische Bildhauer Aldo Chaparro schafft einzigartige Stahlskulpturen und verwandelt diese nur mithilfe seines eigenen Körpergewichtes in gefaltete Filigranitäten. Der Rohstoff der vorliegenden Arbeiten ist ein pinkes bzw. unbearbeitetes Edelstahlblech, eine maschinell gefertigte Metallplatte, die auf Schlankheit, Perfektion und eine glänzend reflektierende Oberfläche genormt ist. Als Endprodukt entsteht ein papierähnliches, zerknülltes Objekt, das nur mehr wenig mit dem ursprünglichen Ausgangsprodukt gemein hat. Chaparro unterzieht das so streng, formal anmutende Metall einer Verwandlung in ein gebrechliches, bewegliches Element, während er dem Material dennoch den Freiraum zur eigenen Entwicklung lässt. Obwohl er sich mit dem gesamten Körpergewicht auf die Platte stützt und Kraft ausübt, behalten die Stahlflächen eine gewisse Autonomie, denn sie bestimmen ihre eigenen Faltenwürfe und Formen. Auf diese Weise entstehen durch Zufallsprinzip verschiedenste Winkelrichtungen, Reflexionen und Lichtspiele, was beim vorliegenden Werk (Los 3453) zusätzlich durch die gefärbte Platte verstärkt zur Geltung kommt. Diese einzigartigen Objekte heben Chaparros fortwährende Beziehung zum Material hervor und animieren den Betrachter, noch nicht Gesehenes in einem der Faltenwürfe ausfindig zu machen. ---------------

The spectacular curved steel sculptures of the Mexican-Peruvian artist Aldo Chaparro, born in 1965, are the result of his continuous relationship with the material. The steel sheets the artist uses are symbols of the industrial age. In his own way and without the use of tools, he succeeds in transforming prefabricated materials into unique objects. The machine-made industrial metal plates are characterised by their slenderness, perfection, and a shiny reflective surface. Chaparro works the metal surfaces, which are one to two millimetres in thickness, like a sheet of paper. His technique, elaborated over a long period of time, enables him to effectively create a "crumpled sheet" out of the solid and rigid metal; he creates the impression of paper that has been scrunched up and unfolded again. As a result, his works exist in that state of tension between rigid, solid metal, and delicate, mobile paper. The metal loses the rigour of its form and becomes a fragile element. To create the folds, the artist uses only his own body weight. As he exerts force on the material, the steel surfaces take on their own folds and shapes. As can be seen in the present work from 2010, the great variety of angles pointing in all directions creates a play of reflections and light. As viewers, we are encouraged to explore, we search for the visible, for what can still appear, so that seeing is transformed into knowing. Aldo Chaparro studied art at the Catholic University of Peru in Lima where he also worked in the studio of Hernán Pazos. In 1991 he moved to Mexico City, where he held a professorship at the University of Monterrey. His works are included in important international private as well as corporate collections, and his presence at art fairs continues to grow. Die spektakulär gebogenen Stahlskulpturen des 1965 geborenen mexikanisch-peruanischen Künstlers Aldo Chaparro sind das Ergebnis seiner fortwährenden Beziehung zum Material. Die Stahlbleche, die der Künstler verwendet, sind Symbole des Industriezeitalters. Auf seine eigene Weise und ohne Hilfsmittel schafft er es, vorgefertigte Materialien in einzigartige Objekte zu verwandeln. Die durch Maschinen gefertigten industriellen Metallplatten zeichnen sich durch Schlankheit, Perfektion und eine glänzend reflektierende Oberfläche aus. Die ein bis zwei Millimeter dünnen Metallflächen bearbeitet Chaparro wie ein Blatt Papier. Seine lang erarbeitete Technik ermöglicht ihm tatsächlich aus dem festen und starren Metall ein „zerknittertes Blatt“ zu erzeugen; er erweckt den Eindruck eines Papiers, das man zerknüllt und wieder auseinander faltet. Dadurch stehen seine Werke im Spannungsfeld des starren, massiven Metalls und des zarten, beweglichen Papiers. Das Metall verliert seine formale Strenge und wird zu einem zerbrechlichen Element. Um die Falten zu kreieren, benutzt der Künstler ausschliesslich sein eigenes Körpergewicht. Während er Kraft auf das Material ausübt, bestimmen die Stahlflächen ihre eigenen Faltenwürfe und Formen. Wie man in diesem vorliegenden Werk von 2010 sieht, entstehen durch unterschiedlichste Winkelrichtungen Reflektions- und Lichtspiele. Als Betrachter wird unser Erkundungssinn animiert, wir suchen nach dem Sichtbaren, das, was noch erscheinen kann, sodass sich das Sehen in Wissen verwandelt. Aldo Chaparro studiert Kunst an der Katholischen Universität von Peru in Lima, wo er gleichzeitig im Atelier von Hernán Pazos arbeitet. 1991 zieht er nach Mexiko-Stadt und übernimmt eine Professur an der Universität von Monterrey. Seine Werke sind in wichtigen internationalen Privat- wie auch Firmensammlungen vertreten, seine Präsenz auf Kunstmessen wächst kontinuierlich. Derzeit lebt und arbeitet der Künstler zwischen Mexiko-Stadt, Los Angeles, Madrid und Lima.
