    CHARLET (NICOLAS-TOUSSAINT). Album lithographique. Paris, Gihaut frères, 1834. In-folio oblong relié du côté long, demi-maroquin à long grain rouge, dos lisse orné avec titre en long, couverture supérieure conservée (reliure vers 1920). Recueil de lithographies : couverture et 18 planches, représentant des scènes de genre souvent humoristiques illustrant la vie militaire sous le Premier Empire. Fils d’un dragon des armées de la République, Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845) étudia dans l’atelier du peintre Antoine-Jean Gros et se fit un nom comme dessinateur de compositions militaires, notamment inspirées de l’époque napoléonienne. Provenance : André Villet (cuir ex-libris).

    Charlet, Nicolas-Toussaint. Der Landstreicher [und:] Soldat mit Gewehr. 2 originale Federzeichnungen in braunschwarzer Tinte auf Papier. Ca. 30 x 20 cm. Zeitgenössisch montiert auf festen Präsentationskarton, unten links hs. bezeichnet "Charlet" (davor kleine Rasurstelle). Karton je 34 x 25 cm. Paris vor 1839. Zwei typische Sujets, die der bedeutende französische Maler, Zeichner, Karikaturist und Lithograph Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845) mit kraftvollen, sicheren Federstrichen skizziert und mit Schraffuren plastisch gehöht hat. "Von seinem Vater, der als Dragoner die Feldzüge der republikanischen Armeen mitgemacht, wurde Charlet in der Verehrung für Napoleon erzogen, dessen Verherrlichung nachmals sein gesamtes Werk dienten sollte." Diesem Geiste entsprechen auch die beiden vorliegenden Zeichnungen, von denen Charlet etwa den "Soldaten mit Gewehr" dann auch in die lithographierte "Suite de dessins à la plume 1839" (Paris, Villain für Gihaut Frères, 1839. Nr. 19) aufnahm (vgl. Inv. British Museum 1852,0424,221). "Als bewährter, echt volkstümlicher Schilderer der Soldaten des Kaissereiches, der brummigen alten Haudegen und Invaliden aus der 'Grande Armée' wird Charlet stets seinen Namen behalten" (beide Zitate: Thieme-Becker, VI, 379). Siehe auch AKL XVIII, 249f.). – Papier teils etwas stärker gebräunt und mit vereinzelten, kleinen Braunflecken, wenig Abrieb (ohne Bildverlust), nur unten in der Signatur bzw. dem Namenszug wurde der Vorname "Nicolas-Toussaint" ausradiert. - Sehr überzeugende, eindrucksvolle Genrebilder von meisterhafter Hand des Zeichners.
