PROVENANCE: Cowboy Legacy Gallery. MAKER: Singed W.M. Chase. William Merritt Chase (1849-1916). American artist heavily influenced by French Impressionism and helped Introduce to the U.S. art scene which later turned into American Impressionism. His works are exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The canvas is marked Higgins and Bowers Tower Bridge Road London. Higgins and Bowers was a prominent manufacturer of art frames and canvases active from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. APPROX AGE: Dated 1902. SIZE: The frame measures approximately 23 inches wide x 15 inches tall. The artwork measures 15 inches wide x 8 inches tall. CONDITION: Good for its age with normal wear and minor imperfections expected. Signed and dated 1869 lower right. Presented under glass in a molded giltwood frame. Approximate sight size: 9" x 9". Provenance South American Collection. Dimensions: 17.5 X 15.5 X 1 in. Condition: Good to fair overall antique condition, with typical age-related toning. The subject wears traditional Castilian clothes but resembles his profile portraits of Mrs. Chase. After having 11 Children, his oldest Daughter Alice ("Cosy") who after his wife became his favorite model. Both Alice and Helen Velasquez Chase had the characteristic strong chin seen in the painting, although this painting may have been executed during his travels to Spain, there are several examples of Alice dressing in traditional Spanish clothes for paintings.
