From the "Yellowstone River" suite, 1982. Each work is pencil signed, titled, editioned "62/135," and dated along the lower right corner. Further signed and editioned along the title page. The lithographs are an early and rare example of Chatham's work, where the artist worked on stone rather than employing more modern methods of lithography. Russell Chatham is known for Tonalist western landscape painting, lithographs. A painter, lithographer, and writer of the American West, Russell Chatham has had several hundred exhibitions of his paintings and prints and is "considered one of the world's foremost lithographers" (27). He has written numerous essays and short stories on hunting, fishing and conservation as well as on food and wine and has had his work published in Sports Illustrated, Esquire, The Atlantic and Outdoor Life. Based in Livingston, Montana, he settled there in 1972, and operates a literary press, a gallery, and a company that produces catalogs, prints and posters. He also spends much time fly fishing. Chatham's paintings focus on the landscape of his surroundings and include Missouri River headwater scenes and Yellowstone National Park. He is fascinated by changing seasons and changing light and the silent, spiritual aspects of landscape. Of his work, he says: "Creating art is an attempt to search for something beyond ourselves". (29). In 1990, he began a commission of twelve large-size paintings that are odes to the Montana seasons for the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman. The main image is titled The Seasons: The Headwaters of the Missouri River in April and is fourteen by ten feet and based on extensive trips to study the river from various vantage points. Chatham was raised in Carmel Valley, California, and there developed a love for the landscape. An inspiration for his painting was his grandfather, Gottardo Piazzoni, one of the foremost California painters in the early 20th century. Chatham inherited and uses his painting tools, easel and sketch box. As an artist, Chatham is mostly self-taught with a stated intent of remaining distanced from the contemporary art world. He is not prolific and sometimes finishes only six or seven large paintings a year.

A mesmerizing Tonalist landscape by Russell Chatham - "one of the world's foremost lithographers" - inspired by the sublime terrain of the American West, most notably Missouri River headwater views and Yellowstone National Park. Chatham captures dynamic light effects, shifting hues, and other evolving aspects of the land as the seasons change. In this November scene, the land sits low as the sky puts on a show with a dramatic squall. Chatham has captured elegant, horizontal bands of clouds punctuated by driving rains, all rendered in a gentle palette of soft taupe above the pale blue and pink hues of dawn or dusk. Chatham's abstract Minimalist approach evokes the poetic grandeur Montana's high plains in late November. He lived in the city until 1949 when his family moved to San Anselmo, where he spent the next twelve years. For the following eleven years, he worked and lived in Marshall, San Rafael, San Anselmo, Black Point, Bolinas, and Nicasio, earning his living as a sign painter and cabinetmaker slash carpenter. In the spring of 1972 he moved to Livingston, Montana. As a painter and author, Chatham is self-taught. He is the grandson of the great landscape painter Gottardo Piazzoni. He began exhibiting formally in 1958, and since then has had something on the order of four hundred one man shows at museums, art centers, private galleries, schools, colleges and universities not only throughout the west in places like Sun Valley, Aspen, Santa Fe and Denver, but also in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, San Francisco and Los Angeles. His work has also been exhibited in Europe and the Orient. Chatham began printmaking in 1981, and is today regarded as one of the world's foremost lithographers. Publications about Chatham include a catalogue called One Hundred Paintings, and another about his original lithographs called The Missouri Headwaters. Several new books are in production, scheduled for release in 2005. One is called Selected Lithographs, another is The Seasons, a survey of the large format canvasses, and the third is a book of the Marin County paintings done from 1999 through 2005. Chatham has been profiled in Esquire, Southwest Art, People, U.S. Art, Antiques and Fine Art, Architectural Digest, Smart, The Denver Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, The San Francisco Examiner, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Times, The Associated Press, National Public Radio's Morning Edition, and Fresh Air, PBS, and CBS Sunday Morning. A painter, lithographer, and writer of the American West, Russell Chatham has had several hundred exhibitions of his paintings and prints and is "considered one of the world's foremost lithographers" (27). He has written numerous essays and short stories on hunting, fishing and conservation as well as on food and wine and has had his work published in Sports Illustrated, Esquire, The Atlantic and Outdoor Life. Based in Livingston, Montana, he settled there in 1972, and operates a literary press, a gallery, and a company that produces catalogs, prints and posters. He also spends much time fly fishing. Chatham's paintings focus on the landscape of his surroundings and include Missouri River headwater scenes and Yellowstone National Park. He is fascinated by changing seasons and changing light and the silent, spiritual aspects of landscape. Of his work, he says: "Creating art is an attempt to search for something beyond ourselves". (29). In 1990, he began a commission of twelve large-size paintings that are odes to the Montana seasons for the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman. The main image is titled The Seasons: The Headwaters of the Missouri River in April and is fourteen by ten feet and based on extensive trips to study the river from various vantage points. Chatham was raised in Carmel Valley, California, and there developed a love for the landscape. An inspiration for his painting was his grandfather, Gottardo Piazzoni, one of the foremost California painters in the early 20th century. Chatham inherited and uses his painting tools, easel and sketch box. As an artist, Chatham is mostly self-taught with a stated intent of remaining distanced from the contemporary art world. A breathtaking color lithograph of magnificent size by American artist Russell Chatham titled "Fall Evening." The sweeping composition depicts a sunset over rolling grassy hills in the foreground and a towering pine forest of the midground. The glowing, coral pink of the sky is highlighted by the dark steel blue of the clouds and midnight green of the woodland, as hues of warm tan seem to peak through areas of the fern green grass. Scattered areas of cyan blue sky and emerald grove add further contrast to the composition, while a few tall peaks of trees rise over the otherwise unified horizon. Size of lithograph: 45" W x 34.25" H (114.3 cm x 87 cm); of : 45.5" W x 34.5" H (115.6 cm x 87.6 cm) Note how Chatham's busy, energetic strokes emphasize the density of the great forest, conveying the multitude of tightly-packed trees that comprise it, as well as the tangled underbrush of the hills and how all are slowly being swallowed by the night's dark shadow. Chatham as chiefly known for his dynamic renderings of natural settings in the American West, as seen in this example. According to Saper Galleries where the artist opened a major exhibition in May 1994: "Russell Chatham was born in San Francisco on October 27, 1939. He lived in the city until 1949 when his family moved to San Anselmo, where he spent the next twelve years. For the following eleven years, he worked and lived in Marshall, San Rafael, San Anselmo, Black Point, Bolinas, and Nicasio, earning his living as a sign painter and cabinetmaker slash carpenter. In the spring of 1972 he moved to Livingston, Montana. As a painter and author, Chatham is self-taught. He is the grandson of the great landscape painter Gottardo Piazzoni. He began exhibiting formally in 1958, and since then has had something on the order of four hundred one man shows at museums, art centers, private galleries, schools, colleges and universities not only throughout the west in places like Sun Valley, Aspen, Santa Fe and Denver, but also in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, San Francisco and Los Angeles. His work has also been exhibited in Europe and the Orient. Chatham began printmaking in 1981, and is today regarded as one of the world's foremost lithographers. Publications about Chatham include a catalogue called One Hundred Paintings, and another about his original lithographs called The Missouri Headwaters. Several new books are in production, scheduled for release in 2005. One is called Selected Lithographs, another is The Seasons, a survey of the large format canvasses, and the third is a book of the Marin County paintings done from 1999 through 2005. Chatham has been profiled in Esquire, Southwest Art, People, U.S. Art, Antiques and Fine Art, Architectural Digest, Smart, The Denver Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, The San Francisco Examiner, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Times, The Associated Press, National Public Radio's Morning Edition, and Fresh Air, PBS, and CBS Sunday Morning.
