Measurements: 61 x 48,5 cm; 46 x 64 cm (frame). Ulpiano Checa's painting is one of the most dynamic and spectacular proposals of the Spanish art of the end of the XIX century. His style is a unique amalgam of academicism, late romanticism and incipient impressionism. The pastoral scene in bidding stands out for its marked bucolic character, manifested in a luminous atmosphere bathed by the golden tones of the sunset. The composition transcends the mere technical description to offer an idealized vision of the countryside, where the rural motif is approached from a viewpoint of dignification and exaltation of the peasant class. Ulpiano Checa, trained at the Academy of San Fernando and a pensioner in Rome, was an internationally successful artist who consolidated his career in Paris and the south of France, standing out for a production deeply influenced by literature and the great historical deeds. Beyond his academic virtuosity and his awards in national and European competitions, his legacy transcended the canvas to become the visual precursor of Hollywood's epic cinema; his mastery of mass composition, the use of deep perspectives and extreme dynamism inspired the scenery and costumes of blockbusters such as Ben-Hur, Spartacus and Gladiator. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Ulpiano Checa began his artistic training in 1873 at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. In 1876, he entered the San Fernando Academy, where he became a disciple of Federico de Madrazo. Upon graduation, in 1884, he obtained a scholarship to study at the Spanish Academy in Rome. During his third year, he submitted a work that earned him first medal at the National Exhibition of 1887 and second at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna in 1888. At the end of 1887, he took up residence in Paris, where he exhibited regularly at the Salons, achieving success when his work won an award in 1890. There he combined painting with his work as a photojournalist for "La Ilustración Española y Americana." At the beginning of the century, he settled in Dax, in the south of France, where he remained until his death in 1916. Checa's work influenced Hollywood adventure films. Film directors such as Stanley Kubrick ("Spartacus"), Mario Bonnard ("The Last Days of Pompeii"), Mervyn LeRoy ("Quo Vadis"), William Wyler ("Ben-Hur"), and, more recently, Ridley Scott ("Gladiator") drew inspiration from his works for their sets, costumes, study of mass movements, and characterization. He also influenced earlier filmmakers in the 1930s and 1940s; his work showed directors the possibility of creating visual effects of depth and perspective that were unusual in cinema until then. Already during his lifetime, in 1901, he collaborated with Henry Sienkiewick on the set and costume design for the stage version of the novel "Quo Vadis." In fact, part of Checa's work is based on literature, most notably this novel, "Ben-Hur," and "Les Misérables." Works by Ulpiano Checa are preserved in the Ulpiano Checa Municipal Museum in Colmenar de Oreja, the Prado Museum, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, and the Museum of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in San Fernando, etc.

It shows traces of gilding. It has faults and deficiencies in the canvas. Signed at intervals of one metre (approx). Measurements: 19.5 m x 0.55 m. In January 1893, L'Avenir de Bagnères-de-Bigorre devoted a report to the artist's move to the town where his wife has a holiday home: "... the studio, barely installed and already so crowded, with this procession unfolding, a living tapestry, along the wall, against a golden background. Checa amused himself by capturing some of the inhabitants of Bagnères and imagined a procession of the Blessed Sacrament with monks, priests, nuns, choirboys, pensioners and passers-by. He mixed the gothic with the modern, the cameramen in their modern costumes with the musicians in white trousers trimmed with red, wearing a gibbous hat topped with an aigrette. It is a high-spirited pochade, surprising in its colours, tones and animation. The resemblance of some of the best known characters of Bagnères is striking. The work is made up of 21 main groups and is signed at regular intervals. For almost twenty years, the Procession was a silent witness to Checa's work in the Pyrenees. When the painter's studio was demolished and replaced by a school in the 1960s, it was saved. Its interest lies in its intimate and familiar character. Ulpiano Checa offers us a poetic and bucolic image inspired by Classical Antiquity. A young man in robes, seated by the sea, gazes into the distance. The din of the warriors contrasts with the peaceful life conveyed by the women hidden behind their veils and the old men sitting on the sand, oblivious to the newcomers. The Orientalist theme has here been treated by Ulpiano Checa with bold compositional ingenuity and using warm shades capable of fully immersing us in the Maghreb atmosphere.
