Plate: 5 1/4 in. x 8 3/4 in; frame: 15 x 19 inches ARTIST PROFILE: Asa Cheffetz (1896–1965) was a premier American printmaker celebrated as a master of wood engraving, a medium in which he was largely self-taught. Born in Buffalo, New York, he studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the National Academy of Design in New York before a nine-year hiatus spent running his family's movie theater business. Returning to art in 1927, Cheffetz became renowned for his "crisp, incisive images" of the New England landscape, particularly its barns, bridges, and snowy vistas, which he captured with meticulous attention to tonal gradation and detail. Often referred to as "the engraver's engraver," his technical brilliance allowed him to achieve effects of light and texture that rivaled lithography. His career was highlighted by significant honors, including designing the official bookplate for the Library of Congress and exhibiting at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Although eye problems forced him to retire from engraving at age 58, his legacy remains preserved in major institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian.

    Asa Cheffetz (1897 - 1965), "The Road Home," wood engraving, signed lower right and labeled verso from Associated American Artists, New York City, measures 5 x 9 inches to image edge, measures 13.50 x 17.50 inches framed. CONDITION: Good. Born in Buffalo, New York, Cheffetz studied at the School Of The Museum Of Fine Arts in Boston under Philip Leslie Hale and at the National Academy of Design in New York City. He also studied with Ivan Gregorevitch and William Auerbach-Levy. An important American print maker who although he worked in various media, he is best known as a wood engraver. His work is included in museums across the United States.

    Asa Cheffetz (1897 - 1965) Original Engraving Signed with Pencil & Titled "Glass" a study, Measures (8 x 6 inches) w/frame (16.5 x 13.5 inches) Born in Buffalo, New York, Asa Cheffetz had a studio in Springfield, Massachusetts. He became noted for his superior engraving skills, exhibited his engravings at the National Academy, where he was a member, and designed the official bookplate for the Library of Congress. He was also an illustrator, with one of his publications being "An Almanac for Moderns". Asa Cheffetz trained at the Boston Museum School and the National Academy of Design with Philip Hale, Ivan Olitsky and William Auerbach-Levy. Exhibition venues included the Royal Academy in London, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
