PROVENANCE: Acquired in 2006 from Ode to Art, Contemporary Asian Art, Singapore by a private collector, Dallas, Texas. Li Chen (Taiwanese, b. 1963) is considered the most accomplished of the new generation of contemporary sculptors in Asia. His monumental figurative sculptures are influenced by Buddhist and classical Chinese traditions using contemporary styles of modeling. His powerful bronze figures express his spiritual commitment to his art practice and his respect for nature. Solo exhibitions of Li Chen's work have been held at The Frye Art Museum, Seattle, Washington; Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; National Museum of China, Beijing; and 52nd International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Italy.

      B. 1963 PURE LAND 61 3/4 by 20 3/4 by 35 in. 157 by 53 by 89 cm. signed, inscribed and dated 1998 bronze This work is number 1 from an EA edition of 4. NOTE Li Chen is recognized as one of the leading Chinese sculptors of his generation, and the work on offer, "Pure Land," is the most significant work in his series entitled "Energy of Emptiness." With an appreciative nod to Botero, the plump child depicted in the sculpture seems to float atop a mountain as though in a weightless, spiritual space. The imaginative massing of the work emphasizes this weightlessness; the small mountaintop hardly seems an adequate support for a child of such girth! The use of raw Chinese lacquer on bronze adds another improbable and intriguing dimension to "Pure Land," a land in which heaviness and lightness are no longer opposites and levity is the only law.
