    Mar. 12, 2022

Chen Yanning (Chinese-American, b. 1945), Portrait of Lily A. Chow

    Est: $5,000 - $10,000

Chen Yanning (Chinese-American, b. 1945), Portrait of Lily A. Chow oil on canvas, signed and dated 1988 at lower right, presented in a later frame. Stretcher size 40 x 29 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 44 x 33 in. Chen Yanning was born in Guangzhou, China and studied at the Guangdong Academy of Fine Art. After graduating in 1965, he remained in Guangdong Province as a painter for the academy until 1986. During this time, Yanning completed the large scale history painting Chairman Mao Inspects the Guangdong Countryside. This painting was reproduced extensively as posters and became one of the most recognizable propaganda images of the Cultural Revolution. Chen Yanning traveled to the United States in 1987 at the invitation of contemporary Chinese art collectors MeiLi and Robert Hefner III. The following year he graduated from Oklahoma State University and remained on campus as an instructor at the university's Art Department. In 1991, Yanning was awarded the national prize in a portraiture competition with the Federation of British Artists in England. His commissions include many prominent sitters, including Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh, Richard Branson, Jane Asher and more. His paintings have been exhibited and acquired by numerous prominent museums and galleries, including the Chinese National Gallery, Asia Society of New York, National Galleries Scotland, and the Long Museum in Shanghai. Lily Ai-Shiu Hwa Chow was born in Shanghai, China on July 1, 1925 into a family of talented artists in the restoration and appraisal of antique paintings and calligraphy. With the support of her family, she studied nursing and graduated in 1945 from the Lester Nursing School in Shanghai. While working as a nurse, she met Philip Lia-Pin Chow, a pilot and her future husband. Following the Communist Government takeover, she and her family fled China and settled in Taiwan. After ten years in Taiwan and six years in Thailand, Lily and her family immigrated to Falls Church, Virginia. By 1974, they were living in Raleigh, North Carolina and owned several successful restaurants. Lily Chow was a woman of great talents, spirit and taste. Her passions, outside of family and friends, included the Peking Opera and jewelry collecting. She was a tireless advocate for promoting China's outstanding national culture and art. It is only fitting that she chose Chen Yanning, one of the preeminent contemporary Chinese artists to paint her portrait. CHEN YANNING (CHINESE 1945-) ROARING TIGER

    Est: £500 - £700

CHEN YANNING (CHINESE 1945-) ROARING TIGER 陳衍寧 《虎嘯圖》 鏡框 紙本設色 ink and colour on paper, framed, titled, stamped and signed upper right (58.5cm x 38.6cm; 80cm x 58.6cm overall) Qty: (1) Footnote: Provenance: Susan J and Michael Gassaway (Syllavethy Gallery, Aberdeenshire), with a letter of authenticity stating that the work was painted in the gallery during his visit to the Britain in 1986 under the sponsorship of the gallery by an official invitation from The Scottish Arts Council. Note: Mr and Mrs Gassaway met Chen Yanning on a trip to China in 1984, when he was the Head of the Guangdong Institute of Fine Art. To reciprocate his hospitality, Susan and Michael invited Yanning to visit the UK to view some of the Old Masters of Western Art that he had only seen in books back in China. Two years later, Yanning arrived in Aberdeen and together with Susan and Michael, he visited the museums in Scotland and London. Yanning made the museum attendants nervous as he wanted to get up close to study the thickness of paint on his favourite masterpieces. He, Susan and Michael communicated by using sign language and drawing sketches and quickly established a great friendship. Chen Yanning (b.1945) is a Chinese painter who lives and works in the United States. He was born in the southern province of Guangzhou, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1965. He continued to work at the Academy as a painter until 1986 when he relocated to America, to study at Oklahoma City University. His early Chinese works include the poster Chairman Mao Inspects the Guangdong Countryside (1972) and New Doctor of the Fishing Port (1973). He has had many public portrait commissions most notably for the British Royal Family, in which he painted Queen Elizabeth, Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne. Yanning's portrait of the Queen was subsequently used by Royal Mail for the Jubilee Year stamp. Yanning works with oil paint, a medium predominantly used by western artists. Chinese painting was traditionally based on the technique of brush painting, which consisted of similar techniques to calligraphy using black ink or coloured pigments. Although a very different medium to oil paint, Yanning's portraits, in employing an impasto technique, which imbues the surface with an almost blurred washed finish, seems to suggest the sustained influence of his country's native painting. A comparable ink painting of three reclining tigers resting on a rock, also painted by Chen Yanning in 1986, was sold at Duton's Tianjin, China, 18th Dec 2011, lot 115

CHEN YANNING (CHINESE B.1945)Young boy with fruit Oil on board, 51 x 73cmSigned Chen Yanning (b.1945) is a Chinese painter who lives and works in the United States. He was born in the southern province of Guangzhou, where he studied at their Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1965. He continued to work at the Academy as a painter until 1986 when he relocated to America, to study at Oklahoma City University. His early Chinese works include the poster Chairman Mao Inspects the Guangdong Countryside (1972) and New Doctor of the Fishing Port (1973). His has had many public portrait commissions most notably for the British Royal Family, in which he painted Queen Elizabeth, Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne. Yanning’s portrait of the Queen was subsequently used by Royal Mail for the Jubilee Year stamp. This present work is an example of the artist’s early paintings and was acquired by the present owner directly from the artist. It depicts a young man set against the background of a blossoming tree. The compositional arrangement it quite unusual and highly idiosyncratic. Yanning places the figure at the bottom of the canvas, on the threshold of the picture plane. Only his head is visible, his arms and body cut off from view. It is almost as if he has briefly popped his head up into the picture space, all of sudden occupying the otherwise empty vista of a flowering prunus tree. Yanning has used the device to create a sense of movement in the work, an immediacy between the viewer and the otherwise static painted surface. Yanning is working in oil paint, a medium predominantly used by western artists. Chinese painting was traditionally based around the technique of ‘brush painting’, which consisted of similar techniques to calligraphy using black ink or coloured pigments. Although a very different medium to oil paint, Yanning’s portraits, in employing an impasto technique, which imbues the surfaced with an almost blurred ‘wash’ finish, seems to suggest the sustained influence of his country’s native painting.
