Provenance : - Dans la même famille depuis plus de 30 ans Né en Chine en 1917, Cheong Soo Pieng fréquente l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Xinhua à Shanghai. En 1942, Cheong organise sa première exposition personnelle d'aquarelles. En 1945, il quitte la Chine pour Hong Kong et fin 1946, il s'installe à Singapour où il sera professeur à l' Académie des Beaux-Arts de Nanyang durant vingt ans. En 1951, Cheong Soo Pieng, ainsi que cinq autres artistes, est invité à présenter ses œuvres en Angleterre. L'exposition a été officiellement inaugurée par la duchesse de Kent. En 1955, il participe à une exposition à l’« Imperial Institute » de Londres. Ces premières peintures des années 1950 et 1960 sont des représentations empathiques et introspectives des peuples, des paysages et des coutumes de Singapour et de la région plus large de l’Asie du Sud-Est. En 1962-63, Cheong voyage en Europe et traverse Londres, l'Écosse, le Luxembourg, Bruxelles, Paris, Amsterdam, Venise, Rome et Munich. Il expose alors à Londres, Munich, Oxford durant ce séjour européen. Ce voyage permet à Cheong de repenser la relation entre son art et l'ethnicité. À son retour, il se lance dans une période de découvertes animée, réalisant de nouvelles innovations stylistiques en matière d'huiles et d'encres. Cheong élargit alors son vocabulaire visuel avec de nouveaux médias, notamment le batik, le collage, le cloisonné, le travail du métal et les matériaux trouvés, mettant à jour ses peintures modernistes pour dialoguer avec une nouvelle génération d'artistes. Les expositions personnelles se multiplient, à Hong-Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney… La fin des années 1970 voit un retour à la pratique antérieure de Cheong, se concentrant sur des sujets d'Asie du Sud-Est, en particulier la Malaisie, et Bali. Cheong stylise alors ces personnages en les représentant avec des membres longs et exagérés et des yeux en forme d'amande, s'inspirant à la fois des marionnettes wayang kulit et d'artistes modernistes tels qu'Amedeo Modigliani et Alberto Giacometti. Cela deviendra la série la plus emblématique de Cheong. Cheong décède subitement en 1983 des suites d' une insuffisance cardiaque, mettant un terme brutal à une carrière en plein développement. Aujourd'hui, son héritage est assuré et son art et sa pratique restent la pierre angulaire de l'histoire de l'art de Singapour. Il est internationalement reconnu comme l'un des artistes pionniers les plus importants de Singapour.
