Original sepia engravings. Numbered in the lower right corner with Arabic numerals from 1 to 4. Sheet sizes: approx. 27 x 36 cm. Plate sizes: approx. 25 x 34,5 cm. Good condition. Margins browned, small tears at the edges, sheets were folded in half and then smoothed.

He was a painter, engraver and publisher of engravings in a neighbourhood of engravers of the Saint-Jacques street who appears in the engravings as "au Grand St. Remy", "au Coq" or "au dessus de la Fontaine St. Remy", "au Coq" or "au dessus de la Fontaine St. Remy". Jacques Chéreau was an engraver and publisher of optical prints in an engravers' quarter in the rue Saint-Jacques, who appears in prints such as "au Grand St. Remy" de la Fontaine St. Remy. From about 1740 to about 1820, optical prints, also called "vue optique" or "vue d'optique", were made to be viewed through a Zograscope, or other convex lens and mirror devices, which produced an optical illusion of depth. Intaglio optical prints have exaggerated converging lines and bright hand colours that contribute to the illusion of depth.

Finger book.- Ambigu magique ou tableaux changeans a l'usage de ceux qui n'ont pas la Berlue, fragment of 27 ff. only, containing a total of 47 (of 168) engraved hand-coloured full-page illustrations, first 2 ff. torn at upper corner with loss of part of 1 image, a few tears, water-stained, some soiling, spotting and fraying, disbound, 8vo (162 x 88mm.), Paris, Jacques Chereau, 1776. sold not subject to return. ⁂ Rare in any condition. Small notches were cut into the fore-margins so that when the viewer's hand is placed on the first in a series and fans the book, the pages 'magically' flip to the next in that series. The book may be turned upside down to see different series. Includes playing cards, womens' costume, flowers, priests, military uniforms and harlequins. The last rare complete copy we can trace was in the Cornelius J. Hauck Collection, sold Christie's 27/6/2006 for $18,000.

From Ovid's Metamorphoses, after the painting by François Marot (1666-1719), printed in Paris c. 1780. Pomona, a splendid wood nymph, spent her days tending the orchards and the garden, ignoring the numerous suitors who showed up to court her. One of these was the Vertumnus God, who by governing the succession of the seasons, had the power to change his appearance. So after trying in vain numerous guises to win Pomona's love, he decided to take on that of an elderly woman with a kind character, who praised the beauty of Vertumnus and persuaded her of the love he felt for her, managed to conquer her engraving 27,5 x 34 cm Sheet trimmed to the plate edge.
