b. 1941 -
Born in Washington in 1941, Dale Chihuly is a master of glass blowing, creating magnificent sculptures and glass artworks that dazzle with color and light. From single pieces like glass baskets modeled after Native American designs to groundbreaking installations on a massive scale, Dale Chihuly’s art is designed to live within the environment in which it is displayed, from cities to buildings and botanical gardens. Made from brightly colored molten glass spun into abstract and sometimes asymmetrical shapes, Dale Chihuly’s sculptures are a modern and architectural marvel.
Chihuly’s prints often reflect his glass work, with colors and shapes reminiscent of his baskets and flowers printed as lithographs. Large installations like Chihuly Over Venice and Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem that truly show the grand scale of Dale Chihuly's art. Immediately fascinated, he went on to study glass at the University of Wisconsin, which was the first university in the United States to teach glassblowing. From there, he went on to the Rhode Island School of Design, where he continued to learn about glass and eventually ended up teaching. His education continued with a Fulbright Fellowship to go to the famous glassblowing studios of Venice. After his time in Italy, he returned to his home state of Washington to found his own glass school, the Pilchuck Glass School, with Ann and John Hauberg, influential supporters of the arts in Seattle. At this school, his art style and process truly flourished. In particular, Chihuly first fostered the collaborative method of glassblowing he had witnessed in Italy at Pilchuck, something that would become a hallmark of his artistic process.

Dale Chihuly (B. 1941) USA, Art Glass Sculpture. 'Ruby Machia with Cobalt Lip Wraps'. 'Magnificent Seven Number Seven -A Glass Masterwork. The seventh and final piece in our Magnificent Seven by Dale Chihuly. While for some its easy to become complacent with genius and fall victim to the sin of taking for granted the privilege of presenting great art, thats not in our genes or pedigree at Sarasota Estate Auction. And surely thats not in Andrew Fords makeup. Ford and SAE are forever grateful for the opportunity to present, well frankly, great art. And Dale Chihuly is all that and more. Thats why it gives us great pleasure and is an honor to present a little bit of his story. And what a story this man named Chihuly spins, as he takes another spin around the bright orange sun a color that the artist knows, loves, appreciates and is inspired by. To those who say that Chihuly is just another artist working in glass, is like saying Sinatra is just another singer. They miss the point entirely. Preposterous, their inclination, an insult to the work and a failure to see an original genius in action. The final piece in Magnificent Seven by Chihuly is titled Ruby Macchia with Cobalt Lip Wrap circa 2004; Possibly a Portland Press Prototype. This Chihuly work is a delight in craft and color. Exquisite in its execution. A visual delight for the senses. And while there are many artists who work in glass, there is only one Dale Chihuly. And what better place to end than with a few reflections from the Glass Maestro and the part hes played creating a world of brilliant and bold art. Glass is the most magical of all materials. It transmits light in a special way...Im pleased that my art appeals to so many people of all ages. As a parent and an artist, Im especially looking forward to leaving a legacy at The Childrens Museum, a place where I hope my work brings joy to children who visit from all over the world. I never met a color I did not like. Size: 11 1/2 x 10 x 5 1/2 in. #1616 Location O6
Dale Chihuly (B. 1941) American, Acrylic paint and mixed media on Arches Paper. Magnificent VII by Chihuly #VI Painting. The Renaissance man from Washington State knows his lifes work and he knows a thing or two about color. And thats true whether hes incorporating his touch into his latest glass work, or hes splashing colors around in a painting, letting them introduce themselves and make love to each other creating a response thats 100% WOW & Wonderful! And thats why you know and understand why Chihuly said, I cant understand it when people say they dont like a particular color. . . . How on earth can you not like a color? To him thats akin to not liking ice cream. In this piece, the colors are pastel with pink sprinkles. Bold and subtle all at the same time. Like tasting a strawberry dipped in chocolate blindfolded. The color just explodes and overwhelms. And that is the joy of Chihuly, the surprise that you know is coming that still surprises you. Take this piece home and let it continue to surprise you - day after day and year after year as you bask in a lifetime of his colors. Overall Size: 51 1/8 x 39 in. Dale Chihuly (B. 1941) USA, Art Glass Sculpture. Dale Chihuly Glass # Five Of Magnificent 7. 'Blue Sky Basket Set' : A Portland Press Edition 2004, this hand blown glass work is comprised of two components. The result? Something hard to define, but easy to enjoy. Engaging, wondering and wandering. The colors may entice you to dream a bit and get lost in the soothing blues of this mysterious piece, just like a child does, laying in the grass and gazing skyward on an endless summer day. Chihuly, his work easily recognizable but harder to define, like the man himself. I'm an artist, a designer, a craftsman, interior designer, half- architect. There's no one name that fits me very well. Whatever name you call this creation, calling it and making it your own, is surely one treasure found, that will leave you feeling like a kid with plenty of days left on summer vacation. Size: 8 x 7 1/4 x 9 3/8 in. #1619 Location O6
Dale Chihuly (B. 1941) American, Acrylic paint and mixed media on Arches Paper Untitled Chihuly Drawing # IV of Magnificent 7. Chihuly has often spoken about the relationship between colors and the energy that they produce when they collaborate, and yes he really did say, I never met a color I didn't like. Its exactly the kind of thing youd expect him to say as he hand paints his next unexpected master work. Here he uses acrylic paint on Arches paper, boldly combining teals and purples with red and throwing in his signature in yellow just because he can, and just because his name is Chihuly. The drawings have to do with releasing energy, Chihuly says, but it is energy that is also replenished, it seems, from his collaboration with others, whether he is drawing in the hotshop during a blow or in front of children in a workshop. Here the result is a dazzling amalgamation of colors from a man who always embraces all the colors presented to him in his life. Overall Size: 52 1/2 x 40 3/4 in. A melding and execution of exploding colors, as fabulous fuchsia, purple, orange and yellow congeal to create an emotional and passionate connection with the art lover. On his process: Chihuly often draws in the glass studio, simultaneously with the blow in progress and values the exchange of energy that results: ideas, images, and creative energy flow from his drawing into the glassmaking, and from the glassmaking back to his drawing. This stunning work is created with Acrylic paint on Arches Paper and Chihuly is signed in green paint along the bottom of this striking signature work. Overall Size: 53 1/2 x 40 in. Magnificent Seven by Dale Chihuly Intro & 1st Piece. Dale Chihuly, American Artist (born September 20, 1941, Tacoma, Washington, U.S. 'Cobalt Blue Persian with Crimson Lip Wraps'. Magnificent Seven by Dale Chihuly presented by Sarasota Estate Auction. Praise for Dale Chihuly, is as bold, colorful and diverse as the master works hes created over his five decades as an artist. Dale Chihuly is one of the most important artists of the 21st century, says Stephanie Stebich, the director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Hes credited as an artist whose glass sculpturesoften presented in complex and dynamic public projectsled to a resurgence of interest in that medium. An icon of the medium, who according to one avid art collector and a renowned glass enthusiast states unequivocally, If theres a Mount Rushmore of Glass artists, Dale Chihuly takes his rightful and much deserved place alongside glass artists and giants, Lino Tagliapietra, Nancy Callan and Mel Douglas. High praise in deed for a man who studied interior design at the University of Washington in Seattle (B.A., 1965) and received an M.S. in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin, where he studied glassblowing under Harvey Littleton. After earning his M.F.A. in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), he traveled to Italy on a Fulbright scholarship and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant and worked at Venini Fabrica, the renowned glassblowing workshop in Murano. Chihuly established the RISD glassblowing program and founded (1971) the influential Pilchuck Glass School north of Seattle. Beyond all the experimentation and education that his life work imparts, is a thirst for creating works that engage, enlighten and expose the masses to his masterpieces and to the fine art of glass. Constantly exploring new techniques he did his first of a number of environmental installationsa group of clear glass bulbs floating on Pilchuck Pond. When a 1976 automobile accident left Chihuly blind in one eye, he pushed on, creating even while dependent on assistants and glassblowers to execute his distinctive designs and vision. Chihulys works in glass both echo and extend glasss historical relationship with functionality. While his vase, basket, bowl and vessel forms dominate many of his individual pieces, he enlivens them with rhythmic tempos and curvaceous motifs far removed from domestic use. Creating a unique look and reaction from art collectors worldwide, When you see a Chihuly you know its a Chihuly. A risk-taker, innovator and entrepreneur who thinks big in all aspects of his life and work because of his singular influence, the Pacific Northwest is an international beacon for the glass arts. His ambitious endeavor in 1996, Chihuly over Venice, saw him take on a collaborative international undertaking, involving glassblowers from Finland, Ireland, and Mexico, a project that included Chandeliers an enduring theme in his work. The display dazzled the public as his creations were installed around the city and lit by natural light, while numerous glass forms were released to float freely along the Venetian canals. In 2002, Chihuly Bridge of Glass accompanied the opening of the Museum of Glass in his native Tacoma, Washington. He has created several notable extended series of artworks including his Seaforms, which evoke shells, starfish and other marine animals; Blankets, which are composed of cylindrical units in patterns suggested by Native American textiles. Dale Chihuly is an American glass artist and entrepreneur, well known in the field of blown glass, "moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture" But he is more than that. Those are mere words. And words do not quite reflect the beauty seen in his glass creations. That is why Sarasota Estate Auction is proud and honored to present seven distinct works by Dale Chihuly, Four Glass and Three Original paintings, that we call the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN by Dale Chihuly. In this, a landmark weekend for Sarasota Estate Auction as auctioneer and owner Andrew Ford conducts the 99th and 100th Auctions of his career dedicated to exposing great and significant art to art lovers and collectors worldwide. One artist, Ford particularly respects is Dale Chihuly for his brilliant, varied and storied career. Dale Chihuly is a legendary artist whose career deserves all the attention and accolades, but none probably more telling than when facing the challenge after his accident, as he looked for a new way to create. No longer able to hold the glassblowing pipe, he hired others to do the work. Chihuly explains in a 2006 interview, saying "Once I stepped back, I liked the view", stating it allowed him to see the work from more perspectives, enabling him to anticipate problems earlier. Yes, to Dale Chihuly, His glass is naturally always half full. While some describe Chihulys role as "more choreographer than dancer, more supervisor than participant, more director than actor, one thing no one can deny is the stamp that he has placed on the world of art. And whenever the Mount Rushmore of Glass artists is carved, preferably in glass, the face of Dale Chihuly will surely be there to be seen in all its bold and bright colors reflecting a deserved glory. His ability to harness exuberance and delight in his art has exponentially increased the visibility of glass. My work gives people a lot of joy, and that makes me feel like Im a really lucky guy. And we are all fortunate and luckier for being exposed to any one of his lifes creations. Now Proudly, Sarasota Estate Auction and Andrew Ford proudly seven of them, The Magnificent Seven by Dale Chihuly. Cobalt Blue Persian with Crimson Lip Wraps, 2000. Dale Chihuly on his work: When I was studying interior architecture, and playing around with glass because I really liked glass. There was one night when I blew a bubble and put a pipe into this glass I had melted and blew a bubble. From that moment, I wanted to be a glassblower. This spectacular creation is possibly a Portland Press Prototype and a hand blown glass work, consisting of two components. Stunning. A conversation piece in any room.
