Night Snow and Domestic Drama – Scene from a Kabuki Play

publisher: Fukuda KumajiroThis striking figural triptych, executed with masterful woodblock technique and the vivid color harmony typical of the late 19th century, belongs to the sewamono genre of kabuki theater – domestic dramas exploring family tragedies, romantic entanglements, and the moral dilemmas of common life. The scene unfolds in the interior of a wooden house and on its veranda during a snowy night, populated by leading stars of the Meiji kabuki stage. From the left, emerging ominously from the snowstorm under a dark parasol, Ichikawa Danjuro IX (active under this name 1874–1903) appears as Achiyama Sogo; Ichikawa Sadanji I (1864–1904) draws his sword as Kaneko Ichinojo; Iwai Hanshiro VIII (1829–1882) shouts as the courtesan Michitose; while on the right, in the striped kimono of a stylish townsman, Onoe Kikugoro V (1868–1903) brandishes his weapon as Kataoka Naojiro. The precise plot of this unidentified play remains unknown, but the scene vibrates with tension, theatrical energy, and dynamic contrast. Like his contemporary Chikanobu, Chikashige was a pupil of Toyohara Kiyochika and continued the pictorial reportage tradition of the Utagawa school into the modern Meiji era. From the 1870s onward, kabuki prints were increasingly produced with imported aniline dyes, especially vivid reds and deep blues, which Chikashige used to powerful dramatic effect. His depictions of stage scenes—mainly from the Shitomi-za theater—are known only from the 1870s and early 1880s, after which his work disappeared. In the publisher’s cartouche, the artist is also identified by his personal name, Morikawa Otojiro.

CHIKASHIGE: A DIPTYCH OF ALL-STARS SUMO WRESTLING, 1875 By Morikawa Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882), signed Ichibaisai Chikashige Japan, dated 1875 Color woodblock print on paper. The wood block print titled All-stars sumo wresting (Yuriki Sekitori Kagami), depicting legendary sumo wrestlers of all periods throughout Japan, lined up in a ‘Hall of Fame’, including legendary wrestlers, such as Raiden Tame'emon, Unryu Hisakichi, Nomi-no-Sukune. Signature to the lower left side ´Ichibaisai Chikashige. Provenance: Czech private collection. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, browning, creasing, a few papers attached onto the reverse for support. Dimensions: Size 48 x 35.4 cm Chikashige Morikawa was a pupil of Kunichika Toyohara. Like his master, he was active in the design of Kabuki prints. Japanese sumo wrestling, an ancient sport, captivated woodblock print artists in the Edo and Meiji eras. The wrestlers, adorned in ceremonial belts opening into fringed aprons, were often portrayed during the ring entering ceremony. Dynamic designs depicted them in action during matches, with referees and judges surrounded by enthusiastic crowds of sumo fans.
