  • Brown Chittenden, Alice (1859-1944) Lone Mountain.
    Jul. 15, 2021

Brown Chittenden, Alice (1859-1944) Lone Mountain.

    Est: $600 - $800

Brown Chittenden, Alice (1859-1944) Lone Mountain. Circa 1910. Oil on board depicting a cross on the mountain with a few shacks and a tent in the foreground, later frame, the board 14 x 10 1/2 in., 19 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. overall. Brown Chittenden depicted Lone Mountain more than once in her career. We have traced a different oil on board and a watercolor with the same basic composition and elements. The temporary housing in the piece was originally set up to shelter survivors of the 1906 earthquake and stayed in place for years. Brown Chittenden is considered the foundational San Francisco female painter of the 19th century. Her success in creating botanical paintings, portraits, landscapes, and pastels earned her gold and silver medals at various expositions. An active promoter of the rights of women, she considered herself a "New Woman." This term was used by feminists [notably Sarah Grand (1854-1943)] to describe an educated, independent person who earned her own money and exercised complete autonomy, free from male domination.

A.B. Chittenden, "Peonies" Signed Oil Painting

    Est: $2,400 - $5,000

A fine impressionist floral painting by American artist Alice Brown Chittenden (1859-1944). Considered the "Grand Dame" of Nineteenth Century San Francisco women artists, she was said to have "evinces a powerful genius" through the "magic of her brush. She was born in Brockport, New York, and moved to San Francisco at an early age. Chittenden began studying at the San Francisco School of Design in 1877, winning honors in drawing. In 1879, she won the school’s Avery Silver Medal in oil painting. Her life's work was a collection of botanicals depicting California wildflowers, for which she is renowned and received gold and silver medals at expositions. She would remain a life-long resident of San Francisco, eventually accepting a teaching post at the School of Design, where she taught for 40 years. Chittenden exhibited for over 60 years. She gathered many specimens herself locally in the San Francisco Bay Area but also during long trips via horseback and stagecoach to the Sierra Nevada Mountains or the deserts of Southern California. These studies were painted using oils on paper. She received assistance from her friend Alice Eastwood, who was the curator of botany at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Her works were so precise that they added not only to art, but also to the field of science! She also painted many portraits, often with pastels. She made portraits of James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill (1914) in the collection of the State Museum Resource Center, California State Parks; Robert Gordon Sproul, President of the University of California; and Judge John H. Boalt who donated funds to build the first Boalt Hall which houses the University of California School of Law at UC Berkeley
