A new day beckons to a pubescent girl, half-naked with a big bed all to herself. With hands outstretched as if yawning, and a song in her heart, she rejoices at her physical development. You can imagine, say, Will.i.am crooning, It's A New Day, in the background. She is on the cusp of exciting times, and the world is her oyster. But in classic Anthonie Chong fashion of building up tensions in innocuous situations, is everything really that hunky-dory? Or is it just some voyeur binge for the viewers? Anthonie Chong first elicited attention in his second solo at Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur, in July 1997 (his first was at a pub in Penang). He became a major figurative artist of 'strangers' in awkward situations, just after graduating with a Diploma in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in Ipoh. In 1998, he won one of the Malaysian awards in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards. He switched to cartoon iconography called e-monk in 2000.

A naked man on a rattan settee with his right leg bent and raised onto the seat, his eyes transfixed rightwards. Something there, or someone? His bored dour expression suggests a mundane everyday ritual, maybe watching TV with its usual insipid fare. The reclusive Anthonie Chong has developed a Hitchcockian effect of psychological dramas in his figures of distracting ghoulish splatters even just after graduating from the Perak Institute of Art. Here, the lone figure is too cleanly defined for comfort, though the coarse dry pigment grates a tension. This, perhaps, is to emphasise the drab domestic life, the ennui, especially for starting-out low-income bachelors. Whatever the spartan setting, nothing beats one's own place, never mind dullness about: the wane yellow walls and the cheap blue seat covers. Prison or palace, maybe a bit of both. Anthonie Chong graduated in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in 1990, and had his first solo at X Pub and Gallery in Penang, in 1994. He had a modicum of success when in 1998, he won the Malaysian-level of the Philip Morris Asean Art Award. But such Baconesque figures took an emotional toll on him, and he decided to abandon them in 2000, for animated characters morphing into e-monk based on the Ne-Zha legend. The Singapore Art Museum gave him a solo, Naked Perfection, in 2002. His last solo, e-monky, was at Artfolio Gallery in Kuala Lumpur.

A naked man on a rattan settee with his right leg bent and raised onto the seat, his eyes transfixed rightwards. Something there, or someone? His bored dour expression suggests a mundane everyday ritual, maybe watching TV with its usual insipid fare. The reclusive Anthonie Chong has developed a Hitchcockian effect of psychological dramas in his figures of distracting ghoulish splatters even just after graduating from the Perak Institute of Art. Here, the lone figure is too cleanly defined for comfort, though the coarse dry pigment grates a tension. This, perhaps, is to emphasise the drab domestic life, the ennui, especially for starting-out low-income bachelors. Whatever the spartan setting, nothing beats one’s own place, never mind dullness about: the wane yellow walls and the cheap blue seat covers. Prison or palace, maybe a bit of both. Anthonie Chong graduated in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in 1990, and had his first solo at X Pub and Gallery in Penang, in 1994. He had a modicum of success when in 1998, he won the Malaysian-level of the Philip Morris Asean Art Award. But such Baconesque figures took an emotional toll on him, and he decided to abandon them in 2000, for animated characters morphing into e-monk based on the Ne-Zha legend. The Singapore Art Museum gave him a solo, Naked Perfection, in 2002. His last solo, e-monky, was at Artfolio Gallery in Kuala Lumpur.

Anthonie Chong has become a byword for figures with an unsettling dark, psychology edge at least in the earlier years of his career. The figures are rendered in yellow ochres with busy staccato impastoes on the top half, as if to suggest depth and posture nuances, makes for an interesting reading. It was a phase after college (first half of the 1990s) that Anthonie Chong created a macabre slew of naked figures with striated flaked white paint and stripped of all pretence. Like “bare-forked animals”, male and female, often singly. Here, a ‘Delilah’ is running and running, probably reverse-chased by a ‘Samson’. Running in the dead of the night on a rickety platform with a diagonal slant (a favourite device of his) to subvert the view. Why, and in full buff and the ashen face, it’s not for us to know, but you could almost hear the thumping sounds of running feet adding to the dramatization. There may be some vicarious thrill in the viewer, and one suspects, the creator tooâ€¦ such is human nature. It may not have been the best of starts to hold one’s solo at the X Pub and Gallery (Penang, 1994) after Anthonie Chong graduated with a Diploma in Graphic Design from the Perak Institute of Art in Ipoh (1990). But in 1998, he won the Malaysian award of the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards. In 2000, he switched to cartoon iconography called e-monk fusing eastern surrealism with digital technology, with his last show on this at Artfolio, Kuala Lumpur in 2009. He even had a solo, Naked Perfection, at the Singapore Art Museum in 2002. He had worked as an art teacher, graphic designer and illustrator. His 1990s works are very much sought after by collectors.

A person next to an incomplete stump of a sculpture stood on a metal rod, is used as an allegory of an uncertain and yet-unformed future in the pursuit of art. The lean figure in a sports jacket looks forlorn, and not any better off than the deformed and spastic sculpture nearby, shown without full lower limbs and head. The sculptureâs rough surfaces are to become a trademark of his painted portraits. Such patchy paintwork with deeply psychological scars and aggression proved much more sought-after than the artistâs more polished and refined e-monk series from the year 2000. Born in Perak in 1971, Anthonie Chong studied at the Chinese Independent School. It was during his studies that he was exposed to Chinese calligraphy and cultural motifs in art. He then advanced to the Perak Institute of Art where he obtained the knowledge of Western art history and other art ideologies such as social realism. He had his first solo exhibition at X-pub & Gallery in Penang and have had more in years after. Anthonie Chong often expresses his paintings based on experiences of the difficulties and predicament of living in the globalised and digital age. He is known for his famous works inspired by ÔNarjarÕ- a tale based on a Chinese legend about a brave child- which in turn produced the e-monk series in the year 2000. The series tackle issues with regards to living in a technocratic era and through the series, he amalgamates Eastern techniques in his works. He also transgresses a recollection of childhood memories in his paintings. ÔA spiritual release and desire for eternal peaceÕ was the main narrative of the e-monk series. In 2008, the Gaia series was produced, mused by nature in which he then focuses on the elements of nature such as fire, earth, water, wood and metal.

It’s an innocuous image of three nubile girls apparently in stripe uniform playing in front of a building, a school? The one with the hair tied in a horsetail and in red fluttering skirt is skipping down the wide steps towards the two seated in front, both holding something in their hands, one raising it with both hands. Knowing Anthonie Chong with his habit of conveying underlying tensions in his figures, this is not a happy rendition of girls at play with all the innocence, but has some sexual and disturbing overtones, in the mind of the voyeur – the artist, you and I. Or could it be something more sobering, the ‘Trinity’ referred to in his first one-man show at Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur, in July 1997. Self-portraits often tell too much, or too little. The way the ‘sitter’, or ‘stander’, as the case may be, is rendered is sometimes beyond the artist’s control, given a full rein of how he or she wants to be portrayed. Autobiographical, there is the psychology element of the unconscious, for the artist cannot possible conceal that which is within as much as the intention is clear. Self-portraits have been a favourite of artists since the Renaissance, which is part vanity and partly to project the subject as a persona to be seen. Notable self-portraits include those of Vincent Van Gogh (Self-Portrait With Bandaged Ear), Courbet (The Desperate Man), Munch (Self-Portrait With Skeleton Arm) and Frida Kahlo (Self-Portrait With Thorn Necklace And Hummingbird). The colour palette (cheery or sombre), execution, demeanour and mood of the portraited. Here, the one shown up to the chest to focus on the face, looks glum even piqued, troubled, and disgruntled, while the background is rendered in pale lemon yellow.
