Around 1930. Bronze, dark patinated. H. 20,5 c 25 x 13 cm, wooden base: H. 2,5 cm. Signed CHRISTOPHE. - French sculptor, pupil of Louis Bérard, Gabriel Jules Thomas and Georges Gardet. He was best known for his animal sculptures, mostly dogs, cats and monkeys made of bronze, plaster or wax, as well as for his portrait busts of famous personalities. An elegant and stylized bronze sculpture of a recumbent greyhound, rendered with a sense of grace and quiet alertness. The dog is positioned in a naturalistic resting pose with front legs extended and head turned gently to one side. The surface is treated with a dark brown patina, and the figure is mounted on a fitted red marble base, typical of high-quality French decorative bronzes of the early 20th century. The form is expressive but refined, with simplified musculature and anatomical emphasis typical of Art Deco leanings, while remaining rooted in naturalism. This blend is a hallmark of Christophe’s sculptural style, which often focused on animal subjects. Foundry: The Siot-Decauville foundry was among the most prestigious art foundries in Paris, active from the late 19th century into the 20th century. Their castings are known for exceptional quality and crisp detail, making them highly collectible. Signature: Incised “CHRISTOPHE” on base. From 1897 he exhibited at the Paris Salon des artistes showing work in plaster, wax, and bronze. In 1923 he was awarded a first class medal.

Pierre-Robert Christophe war ein Schüler von George Gardet und wurde von Rembrandt Bugatti beeinflusst. Schon 1897 debütierte er auf dem Salon des artistes in Paris, auf dem er 1900-1923 mehrere Medaillen gewann. Ab 1929 stellte Christophe auch auf dem Salon d"Automne in Paris aus. Ges.-H. 23 cm.
