Howard Christy (1872-1956) American, "Christy Girl" Victory Liberty Loan Poster

            Est: $300 - $600

Howard Christy (1872-1956) American, "Christy Girl" Victory Liberty Loan Poster. Depicts a beautiful woman surrounded by patriotic symbols, with the words "Americans all!" and an "Honor Roll" around her. Signed and dated 1919 lower middle right. Framed. Overall Size: 40 1/4 x 27 in.  Sight Size: 39 1/2 x 26 1/2 in.  #2 #3581 .  Howard Chandler Christy was born January 10th, 1872 in Morgan County, Ohio. He attended the Art Students League of New York in New York City from 1890 to 1891 and then studied at the National Academy under William Merritt Chase, first at Chase’s summer retreat at Shinnecock Hills, New York on Long Island, and then at his 10th Street Studio. Christy first attracted public attention with his work as a combat artist during the Spanish-American War, published in Scribner’s, Harper’s, Leslie’s Weekly, and Collier’s Weekly. Christy’s portrait of Colonel Theodore Roosevelt that appeared on the cover of the Rough Riders series from Scribner’s gained him special prominence. Uncomfortable being asked to create gritty, “dirty” images of war all the time, he decided to shift away from painting men in uniform, yearning for “American beauty” instead. He created the iconic “Christy Girl” image, redefining the contemporary portrayal of women in America through his illustrations and portraits in a picturesque and romantic style: tall, confident, elegant, witty, and athletic, often with defined musculature and an ethereal glow about them. In 1898 he married Maebelle Gertrude Thompson, the first model for his “Christy Girl,” with whom he had a daughter named Natalie. They divorced in May 1919, after over ten years of periodic separation and custody battles. During World War I he painted patriotic posters for the Navy and Marine Corps, and illustrated the works of the war correspondent Richard Harding Davis. His work, whether in watercolor, oils, or pen-and-ink, became instantly recognizable to the American public. In 1924 Christy painted the official portrait of First Lady Grace Coolidge that was hung in the Red Room of the White House and has been displayed in the China Room since the Kennedy administration. In 1925 he married Nancy Mae Palmer, a widow who had modeled for him for the past eight years. Their divorce was more amicable. During the Great Depression Christy found new success as a muralist and painter of historical events. In 1934 he met Elise Ford, who became his model for a series of female nudes to decorate the New York City restaurant Café des Artistes, which have been restored and are still visible at the restaurant (reopened as The Leopard in the 1960s). Forty years his junior, Nancy became the template for all future variations of the “Christy Girl,” and was his companion until his death. They had a daughter named Holly in 1939. In 1940 he painted perhaps his most famous work, the Scene at the Signing of the Constitution of the United States, which was installed in the House of Representatives wing in the United States Capitol. He passed away in New York City on March 3rd, 1952. Original works by Christy can be found in numerous museums, including the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center, and he is considered one of the paramount artists of 20th Century American nationalistic art.

            Jun. 20, 2024

Americans All! Victory Liberty Loan Original Vintage WWI Poster by Christy 1919

            Est: $800 - $1,200

A beautiful woman holds a victory wreath above the names of brave soldiers fighting overseas in this patriotic American WWI poster. The litany of last names displayed is meant to evoke the diversity of America, which continues today. As the phrase "Americans All!" asserts, all soldiers are equally supporting America, and the same is asked of civilians at home by way of buying Victory Liberty Loans. America's involvement in WWI was largely unanticipated, and quite expensive. The U.S. Government began soliciting bonds that everyday Americans could deposit to the cause, to be paid back by the government when the war ended with interest applied. This influx of cash flow allowed the US to buy tanks, feed soldiers, and essentially finance the path to victory. Howard Chandler Christy (1872-1952) was one of the most important American illustrators of the early 1900s. He began his career as a battlefield artist, depicting skirmishes in the Spanish American War for publications such as Colliers, Scribner's, and Harper's. From there, he continued to illustrate for these magazines using his famous "Christy Girl" character, a beautiful, confident, and witty woman meant to represent the new American ideal. Christy became a household name through this character. During WWI, he returned to battle depictions as well as poster design. Following the War, Christy became very successful as a portrait artist, taking commissions from Teddy Roosevelt to Amelia Earhart. This is an Original Vintage Poster, not a reproduction. It has been archivally backed onto linen and is in excellent condition. We fully guarantee the authenticity of our items.

The Christy Girl, Howard Chandler Christy 1906

            Est: $60 - $120

The Christy Girl, Howard Chandler Christy 1906. This is an attractive art book by Howard Chandler Christy titled “The Christy Girl”, published by Grosset And Dunlap in 1906, with drawings by Howard Chandler Christy and decorations by Earl Stetson Crawford. Christy (1873 - 1952) was an American artist and illustrator from Ohio who was famous for the "Christy Girl”, a colorful and illustrious successor to the "Gibson Girl" by Charles Dana Gibson. Christy is also widely known for his iconic World War I military recruitment and Liberty loan posters, along with his 1940 masterpiece titled "Scene at the Signing of the Constitution of the United States", which was installed along the east stairwell of the United States Capitol, and he was a portrait painter whose sitters included presidents, senators, industrialists, movies stars, and socialites: he painted Theodore Roosevelt as a Lt. Colonel, and Presidents Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Harry Truman. Other famous people he painted were William Randolph Hearst, the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII), World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker, Benito Mussolini, and Amelia Earhart. He first attracted attention with his realistic illustrations and several articles as a combat artist during the Spanish-American War, and after all this catapulted him to national prominence, he decided to turn away from war and patriotic themes and painting soldiers in uniform, and instead, he yearned for beauty and created the "Christy Girl”. During the Great Depression, Christy found new success as a muralist and painter of historical events. The book here has a woman’s portrait in a decorated oval frame on the front cover, with a spine decorated by an artist’s easel and brushes, the decorated front endpapers seem to have been applied upside down, the half-title carries the theme of the Christy girl descending from up above with easels and artist brushes again, the frontispiece depicts an elegant woman posing for her portrait, there are three Contents pages highlighted with “gilt oval mirrors”, sixteen color images, including the frontispiece, and five black and white images with poetry that accompanies each image, the endpaper at the rear is right side up, the pages are not numbered - they’re unpaginated, in fancy book talk - and it comes in the original box that protected the book and told you the theme of the book right way - beauty and women. Earl Stetson Crawford (1877 - 1966) was a painter, printmaker, muralist and illustrator, born in Philadelphia, and grandson of the hat-maker, John B. Stetson (of Stetson hat fame.) The book was originally published by Bobbs-Merrlll in November 1906 and this is a first edition thus by Grosset & Dunlap. The book measures 9 3/4 x 7 1/4 in. wide and the covers are beautiful - very clean and attractive - and the portraits themselves are very clean and bright. There are occasional brown spots in the margins, but they don’t detract from the images in the book. There is a tissue guard that protects the frontispiece as well, and that has some brown spots on it, but it did its job and kept the frontispiece from getting marred. The corners and edges are clean and crisp too, and the only real blemishes are on the box the book came in - the cover is soiled and the edges need some tending to - other than that, a beautiful book that tells you what Howard Chandler Christy was all about. We believe this is the finest copy out there, based on the rare book website we use to evaluate books. #211 #1548

His career was established when he worked for Scribner's and Leslie's Weekly doing illustrations of American troops in Cuba during the Spanish American War. After that, he was most sought after for his sumptuous, lush portraits of women, although he also painted other notables that included President Calvin Coolidge, General Douglas McArthur, Eddie Rickenbacker, Douglas MacArthur, Amelia Earhart, Herbert Hoover, and Benito Mussolini. He was also a muralist and much sought-after teacher, giving classes in New York City at Cooper Union, the Chase School, the New York School of Art, and the Art Students League. Christy was born on January 10, 1872 in Morgan County, Ohio as reflected in the court records of that county.

WWI CLEAR THE WAY WAR BOND POSTER BY CHRISTY WW1

            Est: $400 - $600

This is a first edition WWI patriotic poster by Howard Chandler Christy (1873 – 1952) to encourage the general public to buy bonds for the fourth Liberty Loan campaign. This poster like so many others by Christy invokes an overwhelming sense of patriotism with the American flag draped over a figure of Columbia next to soldiers aiming a naval gun. Christy is perhaps the most celebrated and collectible of the WW1 American poster artists. Saving stamps that were issued by the United States Treasury to promote the Victory Liberty Loan. In order to pay for the war effort the United States Government issued a set of five liberty loans. The fifth and final loan was known as the Victory Liberty Loan. Working Americans would buy these bonds or war stamps -- that they could then trade in for smaller denominations of bonds which at the end of the war would be repaid with interest. Poster measures 30 X 20. MINT

ARTIST: HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY (1873-1952) SIZE: 26 3/4 x 39 5/8 in./68 x 100.7 cm PRINTER: Forbes, Boston DESCRIPTION: “Columbia places a laurel wreath above an Honor Roll of fallen heroes containing many foreign names, but, for obvious reasons, no German surnames” (Meehan Military Posters, Cat. 23, No. 79). Ohio-born Christy had a reputation as a patriot, both as a graphic artist and an American citizen. After training at New York City’s Art Students League (where he was forced to drop out of William Merit Chase’s painting class when it was discovered that he sold illustrations to magazines), he accompanied the troops to Cuba during the Spanish-American War, earning regard as a combat artist. An illustrator, portrait painter, and muralist, he is much esteemed for his recruitment posters. (War & Propaganda; American)

Such success is due primarily to posters like this, which showed that every American could and should do their part to protect their country—and the allure of the feminine is undeniably persuasive. In fact, after the war, "Christy Girls" became symbols of cosmopolitan sex appeal during the Roaring '20s. This is the smaller format version of the poster. (War & Propaganda; American)

Not only is this an interesting comparison to Christy's "Gee!! A beautiful woman wears a victory wreath on her head, as the American flag unfurls behind her in this patriotic American WWI poster. She represents America, clearing the path across the ocean for the seamen below to launch their rocket against the enemy.
