Abdur Rahman Chughtai (Indian, 1897-1975) Untitled, Head of a woman Watercolour on paper, Mounted, Glazed and framed, 30 x 27cm (unframed) Provenance: Ex. Collection Chughtai Museum Trust, Lahore, Pakistan Abdur Rahman Chughtai is regarded as one of the great modern masters of Pakistan. He began his training at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore in 1911, where he was taught by Samarendranath Gupta, a pupil of Abanindranath Tagore. He was deeply influenced by aspects of the Bengal School of art, which is particularly evident in his fine wash technique. However, Chughtai soon developed a distinct style that rivalled the Bengal School, and emerged as one of the leading practitioners across the subcontinent. His works illustrate a unique combination of influences including Mughal miniature painting, Islamic calligraphy and aspects of the Western Art Nouveau movement, but remain grounded in the diverse mythological traditions of the Subcontinent, both Hindu and Islamic.

Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Pakistani, 1894 to 1975, watercolor painting on paper depicting a portrait of a woman in a manner influenced by Indo Persian and Mughal art. Signed lower left. Abdur Chughtai is known for Figural painting, of female figures. Abdur Rahman Chughtai is remembered today as possibly the most distinguished Pakistani artist of the 20th century. His work draws from a shared South Asian cultural heritage, and he was one of the few Pakistani artists to be recognized in India before and after the 1947 partition. Chughtai began his training at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore in 1911, where he was taught by Samarendranath Gupta, himself a pupil of Abanindranath Tagore.
