EN Originally from Lagos, Gerald Chukwuma studied painting at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka. A multidisciplinary artist, he produces not only visual and sculptural works but also designs furniture. He is best known for his intricate wooden panel sculptures, crafted through a meticulous process of burning, carving, and painting, resulting in pieces rich with both personal and political significance. Chukwuma's work is deeply connected to the artistic tradition of Nsukka, a school that played a central role in developing and modernizing Igbo cultural aesthetics. A descendant of the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria, he creates a striking visual language that fuses ancient symbols with contemporary and historical references. His artworks function as “scrolls,” documenting untold stories from Igbo culture and modern Nigeria, in defiance of the one-sided narratives often perpetuated by media and those in power. His practice is driven by concern over the lack of documentation of Igbo heritage and the risk of its disappearance. By embedding traditional symbols, which were once painted on skin or house walls and lost to sun and rain into his works using enduring artistic techniques, he seeks to preserve this unique intangible cultural legacy. Chukwuma also transforms found, everyday materials into detailed artworks, grounding his practice in contemporary realities and ecological concerns. His work is held in both private and public collections across the United States, the Netherlands, Ghana, the United Kingdom, and France, and has been exhibited internationally. Gerald CHUKWUMA
