Born in Kiangsi, China in 1942, Lau Chun demonstrated interest in art at the age of ten. After graduating from high school, he entered the Canton School of Fine Art for two years. With a solid foundation in the ordered and exacting style of classical Asian artists, he left for Hong Kong. In 1962, while living in Hong Kong, Lau was hired by Francis Bodo, a noted Mexican artist, to paint murals and mosiacs. He worked with Bodo for eight years- the mosiac backgrounds in many of Lau''s paintings are not by accident. In 1968, the Revox Corporation of Switzerland bestowed a two-year scholarship grant upon Lau enabling him to study extensively in Europe. Revox sponsored exhibits of his work in Hamburg and Copanhagen at the end of the two year period. Attracted by the light and color of the Hawaiian islands, the artist settled in Honolulu in 1971. While Lau has been inspired by the French Impressionists, he developed a distinctive style that redines the tenants of classical impressionism. The uniquely textured paint surface is abstract up close but, at a distance, perfectley captures the spirit and values of his subjects. Overall size: 21 x 27 in. Sight size: 17 1/2 x 23 1/2 in.

Signed bottom left measures approx 39.5" x 41" featuring a fantastic impressionist style garden. 'Exuberant color, vigorous brushwork, and a joyous outlook are all characteristics of Lau Chuns highly distinctive oil paintings. Born in Kiangsi, China, Lau demonstrated a precocious interest in art at the age of ten. After graduating from high school, he entered the Canton School of Fine Art to receive a solid foundation in the fundamentals of art. In 1962, living in Hong Kong, Lau was hired by Francis Bobo, a noted Mexican artist, to paint murals and mosaics. They worked together for eight years. Later, a grant from a Swiss company, Revox Corporation, led to study and recognition in Europe. Attracted by the light and color of the islands, the artist settled in Hawaii in 1971. While Lau has been inspired by the French impressionists he has developed a distinctive style that redefines the tenants of classical impressionism. The uniquely textured paint surface is abstract up-close but at a distance, perfectly captures the spirit and values of his subjects. Lau Chun, Immensely Popular Chinese/American Artist "Point Lobos". (Born 1942) Lau Chun was born and studied in China, mentored by Francis Modo a Mexican muralist for 8 years, sponsored by a corporation to paint in Europe for two years and finally in 1971 moved to Hawaii inspired by the light and colors of the islands. Using heavily textured paints appear abstract up close, but at a distance his spirit and values of his subjects come into focus. "Point Lobos", a work based on his visits to Northern California perfectly captures this Calfornia State Natural Reserve, a famous point for millions about 3 miles south of Carmel on Hwy 1. A beautiful work capturing the colors of this landmark of the California coastline 22 x 28" and handsomely framed to 29 x 34. Chun has signed in lower right and the painting is in excellent condition. Estimated Value $1,250-UP.
