    Property of a Private Collector, Ridgeland, SC Description: Thanh Chuong (Vietnamese, b. 1949), Mother and Child, Gouache on Paper, 1996, signed and dated '96 upper right, depicting two figures on an abstract pink background, in a black frame with mat. Frame size: 31 1/2 in. x 23 1/4 in. Born in 1949 in Bac Ninh, Thanh Chuong is the son of writer Kim Lan - a Vietnamese literary icon. From a young age, artist Chuong was immersed in the art world through visits to the homes of renowned painters. He studied at the Vietnam Fine Arts School. Thanh Chuong's painting style exemplifies 'contemporary folk' talent - a subtle blend of Vietnamese identity and global artistic language. Measurements: Height: by sight 22 1/4 in. x Width: 14 5/8 in. Condition: Good condition. Donald Van Stone served as the Regional Vice President of the First National Bank of Chicago from 1971-1984, a time in which the bank was expanding internationally. After assignments in Germany, Kenya, and Australia, the Van Stones moved to Manila, Philippines where they began amassing an impressive collection of Chinese and Southeast Asian art and artifacts, some of which will be offered in this auction.**

    Two distorted figures are seen resting in their own solitude even though one of them opens its eyes staring blankly into space. Shapes, forms, and colours used in this piece just complemented one another, forming a pleasing balance of light and shadow. The artist's distinctive style of painting is often inspired by Vietnamese rural life, family, love and self-portrait. Thanh Chuong is a Vietnamese modern and contemporary artist who was born in 1949. He started painting at the age of seven, since then he has won numerous awards and gained recognition through his art. In 1960 he entered the Institute of Fine Art. Among his first teachers at the time were Nguyen Sang, Bui Xuan Phai, and Nguyen Tu Nghiem. In 2001 Thanh Chuong's work was chosen by the United Nation as a symbol for the International Year of Volunteers thus, became the first painter in Asia who had a painting printed on the UN stamps. His works were not only exhibited locally but worldwide throughout the years of his involvement in art including Korea, Japan, New York, Hong Kong, Denmark, England, France and Italy.
