Frederick Stuart Church (1842-1924) was an artist, working mainly as an illustrator and especially known for his (often allegorical) depiction of animals. He gained a name as a gifted illustrator. Among the many magazines and periodicals which eventually took up his works were the various Harper's publications. In 1883, Church was elected into the National Academy Of Design.

Housed in a Louis XIV style giltwood frame with pierced corners and centers. Sight: 15 3/4" H x 42 3/4" W. Framed: 30 1/4" H x 57" W x 4" D. Artist Biography: "Known for his decorative work, especially of anthropomorphic animals, Frederick Stuart Church was a native of Michigan who had a long career in New York City. He had in-depth knowledge of animal anatomy, which was evident in the depictions of this subject in oil, watercolor, and etchings. His first allegorical compositions were produced in the mid-1870s. Although he was a strong believer in academic training, Church did not visit Europe until late in life and felt that foreign art had little to teach Americans. He was directed by his parents toward a business career, and worked from the age thirteen to seventeen for the American Express Company in Chicago. He did a lot of drawing in his spare time. For three years, he served in Union artillery during the Civil War, and then returned to Chicago where he studied at the Chicago Art Academy with Walter Shirlaw. In 1870, he moved to New York and studied at the National Academy of Design with Lemuel Wilmarth and at the Art Students League. Early on, he earned his living as a commercial artist including illustrations for "Harper's Weekly." His illustrations often featured black and white drawings of animals. Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, Brooklyn, New York. By descent in the family. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Condition report: Frame: 37 x 55 x 1 1/2 in. In overall fair to good condition, with faint hairline craquelure running vertically throughout the canvas. We notice some craquelure webs at times as well, for example at upper right corner. With light flaking on the main bear's face. The canvas would benefit from a light cleaning, judging from the yellowish smears in some parts of the canvas (from the old varnish, most likely). Examination under UV light does not reveal any sign of inpainting. With a small flake at center right (on one of the bears), slight abrasions along the outer edges, including the top outer edge, where we notice three pinpoint holes at upper right.

    Frederick Stuart Church (1842 - 1924) "Buffalo" Colored Pencil on Paper. Before launching his art career, Frederick Stuart Church was a soldier in the Civil War, serving under General Sherman. Later he trained at the Chicago Academy of Design, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students' League in New York. Church first found success as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly, and by the mid-1870s, he was a respected painter, draughtsman, watercolorist, etcher, and illustrator. Church belonged to numerous artist groups aligned with three dominant interests in his career: the American Watercolor Society, the New York Etching Club, and the Society of Illustrators. He became a member of the National Academy in 1885 and was an influential artist in the etching medium, helping to spearhead its revival in the 1880s.
