DER HEILIGE ANTONIUS VON PADUA MIT DEM JESUSKIND Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 93 x 108 cm. In breitem ebonisiertem mit vegetabilen Goldornamenten verziertem Rahmen. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Dr. Federica Spadotto, ohne Datum, in Kopie. Ein profiliertes Lesepult auf dem eine aufgeschlagene Missale liegt wird von einer Wolkenbank überfangen, auf der das Jesuskind mit einer Lilie sitzt, dessen Hand von dem Heiligen Antonius von Padua in seiner braunen Kutte liebkost wird. Während der Heilige nur einen Nimbus beansprucht, hat Cignaroli das Jesuskind mit einem Doppelnimbus bedacht und seine Bedeutung somit erhöht. Zwei Cherubim füllen die rechte obere Ecke und versinnbildlichen den Gehalt der himmlischen Sphäre. (1301462) (13)

(Verona, 1706 - 1770) Studio di Santo Olio su tela, cm 60X41 La tela mostra una luminosità delicata, cromaticamente ricca e una notevole forza espressiva, avvalorata da un tessuto pittorico costituito da una morbida pastosità, caratterizzata da rifrazione smaltate, traslucide, realizzate da sottili velature che giocano con le zone d'ombra a risparmio e sapienti contrasti cromatici. La libertà pienamente settecentesca è altresì moderata da un classicismo elegante, questi indizi fanno convergere la datazione dell'opera alla maturità dell'artista, dopo il soggiorno veneziano avvenuto tra il 1735 e il 1738 e più precisamente attorno al sesto decennio, quando la sua tavolozza assume tonalità che attenuano le reminescenze chiaroscurali per abbracciare un chiarismo settecentesco e in certi casi neoveronesiano.

DIE TRINITÄT MIT DER HEILIGEN FAMILIE, DER HEILIGEN ANNA UND DEM JOHANNESKNABEN Öl auf Leinwand. 155 x 102 cm. Beigegeben ist eine Expertise von Dario Succi, Gorizia, mit zahlreichen Bildvergleichen. Das hochformatige Altarblatt vereint in der Darstellung zwei theologische Motive: zunächst zeigt das Bild die Heilige Familie, mit der jungen Mutter Maria, die ihr auf einem Laken liegendes Kind ihrer Mutter Anna präsentiert, links hinten etwas verschattet der Heilige Joseph. Der Johannesknabe steht davor und wird von den Armen der Großmutter Anna umfangen. Sein Attribut, das Lamm, der Verweis auf den künftigen Tod Jesu, liegt neben einem beschriebenen Schriftband am Boden, nahe dem Betrachter vorgelegt. Diese Gedankenführung zeigt höchste Raffinesse, als auch Anna durch den Fingerzeig auf das Lamm den Kreuzestod andeutet. Zudem ist im Bild die Trinität – in Gestalt des Jesuskindes, der Taube und der Gottvaterfigur – thematisiert. Eine solche Trinitätsdarstellung – mit Jesus als Kind – ist in der Kunstgeschichte kaum wiederzufinden und zudem ein Beweis eines außerordentlichen Concetto des Malers. Die Gestalt des Gottvaters hat der Maler in ganz eigener stürmischer Dynamik vorgestellt, im oberen Bildteil schwebend und von zwei Engeln in Wolken gehalten. Eine solche Reife in der Themengestaltung war nur möglich durch die profunde Bildung und Schulung des Malers in der Literatur, Rhetorik und Dichtung. Als Schüler des Antonio Balestra 1666-1740) wandte er sich überwiegend religiösen Themen zu, aber weit intelligenter als dieser, vermochte er geistige Sinnzusammenhänge zu thematisieren. Es passt in seine Vita, dass er noch im Alter seine „Denkwürdigkeiten“ verfasste, 1771 herausgegeben. Werke seiner Hand finden sich in zahlreichen bedeutenden öffentlichen Sammlungen und Museen. A. Such maturity in the portrayal of the subject is only possible due to the artist's profound education and schooling in literature, rhetoric and poetry. As a student of Antonio Balestra, he predominantly focused on the depiction of religious subjects but, as he was far superior, he was able to also address intellectual contexts. Fittingly, he wrote his “Denkwürdigkeiten” in old age, published in 1771. His works can be found in numerous important public collections and museums.

Giambettino Cignaroli, The Holy Family with Saint Anne and John the Baptist protected by the Trinity

Certificate Dario Succi, undated. Dario Succi assigns the present, previously unpublished work to Cignaroli's later phase. The majestic scene depicts the Holy Family protected by the light of the trinity, which softly illuminates the painting's forms and colours. The bold draughtsmanship, balanced composition, and solidly modelled figures in this work all testify to the influence of the Roman and Bolognese classical tradition. However, the work's architectural setting alludes to even earlier prototypes, namely the Venetian paintings of the late Renaissance, especially the works of Paolo Veronese. Cignaroli bases his composition on an earlier altarpiece which he painted for the orphanage of San Carlo all casa di Dio (dated 1751). This piece shows a similar trinity group that varies only slightly from the present work. The clear and airy colours in the painting are generally reminiscent of this artist's works from the 1750s, a period in which he had achieved full artistic maturity. Giambettino Cignaroli became director of the Academy in Verona in 1764 and was among the most important artists of the Veronese settecento. Although he spent his entire life and career in his home town of Verona, his works were sought after among rulers and dignitaries throughout Europe and could be found in the collections of Louis XV, the Russian politician and collector Alexander Sergeyevich Stroganov, and the Habsburg Emperor Joseph II, who spent many years attempting to attract Cignaroli to the Viennese court, ultimately without success.
