Luigi Pigorini (1842-1925) was one of the leading figures in ethnographic and prehistoric studies between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Father of the discipline of Palethnology in Italy, he was the first professor of the subject at an Italian university (La Sapienza) and founder of the National Prehistoric Ethnographic Museum of Rome, as well as Senator of the Kingdom of Italy and Academician of the Lincei.. 54 x 65,50 cm.

    ANTONIO CISERI (1821-1891), attribué Il martirio di sette fratelli Maccabei Il martirio di sette fratelli Maccabei, oil on canvas 57.5 x 38 cm. Old stickers on the reverse. The Massacre of the Seven Maccabean Brothers is one of the major works of Antonio Ciseri, produced between 1857 and 1863 for the Church of Santa Felicita in Florence and which is now kept at the Caccia Museum in Lugano. The painting that we present is the preparatory version painted by the artist probably around 1855 and presenting some differences compared to the original painting as in the colonnades or the representation of a large sculpture in the place of three characters. Signé Luigi Michelacci, Florence 20-03-1900. - Etiquette « Je pense que cette peinture pourrait être l'œuvre du professeur Antonio Ciseri » (Signature illisible) - Etiquette "Les sept Maccabées sont à mon avis l'œuvre d'Antonio Ciseri et je la considère en toute bonne foi comme étant très belle » signé Garibaldo Tordi, Florence 7 Juin 1930 Biographie : Peintre Suisse né à Ronco sopra Ascona dans le Tessin, il se forme à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts à Florence dans l'atelier des maîtres Nicola et Pietro Benvenuti mais également avec Tommaso Minardi, cofondateur du purisme italien. Ses peintures religieuses sont à la fois d'inspiration raphaélesque dans leurs contours et photographiques dans leurs effets. Ciseri reçoit de nombreuses commandes de diverses églises en Italie et en Suisse, mais aussi des portraits comme celui de son beau-père Gaetano Bianchini ou celui devenu célèbre de Camillo Benso, Comte de Cavour. C'est en 1853 qu'il ouvre sa propre académie où il forme notamment Silvestro Lega, Niccolo Cannicci ou encore Girolamo Nerli. Suite à la réorganisation des Académies et du patrimoine artistique italien, Antonio Ciseri se rangera du côté de l'Accademia di San Luca qui abhorre le modernisme.

Molto probabilmente un bozzetto preparatorio per un dipinto, si vedano il non finito della parte superiore destra, delle mani e il reticolo per la prospettiva visibile soprattutto nella parte inferiore sinistra. Potrebbe essere uno studio per I Maccabei o per la figura di Cristo. L'artista ha studiato la raffigurazione del corpo di Cristo in varie occasioni, si vedano La Deposizione e Il trasporto di Cristo al sepolcro. (1)
