WILLARD CLARK SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, 1910-1992 MT. ADOBE - 1938 Woodcut Lower left printer named and numbered: RYAN (grandson of the artist) 24/30; lower right signed: W.Clark; verso labeled: Mt. Adobe Catalogue #130 / Willard Clark – Woodcut ca. 1938 / Woodcuts in Basswood – 5 colors / Paper – Rives, Ink – Handground / Printer – Kevin Ryan – grandson / Printing I 24/30 1996 Catalogue note: Clark trained in art schools in Argentina, New York, and Provincetown. He then became an accomplished commercial printer in the 1930s and soon created a typographic style that, along with his own woodcut illustrations, became closely identified with Santa Fe. Clark closed his printing shop in 1942; he spent the following thirty years as a master tool and die machinist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Upon retirement in 1979, Clark unpacked his engraving tools, bought a small proof press, and produced a body of prints that are now keenly sought by collectors for their artistry and precision of technique. The New Mexico Museum of Fine Art had a solo-exhibition of Clark's woodcut prints in 1992.
